SOME PEOPLE WADE INTO LOVE. OTHERS FALL IN THE DEEP END.

SAMANTHA:
Deacon King is the bane of my existence.

Ever since I came to this island to relax for the first time since . . . well, ever . . . my life is unraveling in a series of humiliating events. As I watch the carefully crafted control in my life slip through my fingers like sand, Deacon’s twinkling blue eyes and sly smile have a front row seat.

I’m trying to avoid him like the plague, but not only does he teach a class I signed up for but, unfortunately, he's also my neighbor.

I need to stop running into him, and he needs to stop flashing me his flirtatious smile, ocean blue eyes, and perfectly sculpted abs. He also need to start remembering that he’s married with a kid, or he is going to find out just how much trouble I can cause him.

DEACON:
I feel like this woman could cause me a lot of trouble.

Sam Turner is one of the most unexpected hurricanes to ever blow onto this island. She can’t catch a break whenever she’s around me and ends up in the most uncomfortable situations . . . for her. Personally, I find it adorable. I can tell she’s trying to avoid me, but there's a tug in the middle of my chest that keeps me finding ways to spend time with her—even though it's the last thing I should do.

She seems a little bit of crazy and a whole lot of complicated, but I think my heart’s in trouble.

And for some reason, she thinks I’m married.

Breathing Under Water is a sweet, clean, closed-door romance full of banter, laughs, chemistry, sizzling kisses, but with no explicit content.

About the author

Nicole J. Kimzey

Nicole grew up in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains in Provo, Utah. Her young writing career began with plays, song lyrics, and variety shows, all of which her family and friends were happy to support (translation: forcibly persuaded to both pay money for and sit through).

After her young entrepreneurial days ended, she married her college sweetheart, aka: Boyfriend, who provides the inspiration for all her swoon-worthy leading men. They raised their two girls and two boys in Phoenix, Arizona, then St. George, Utah, where they still live.

She loves randomly breaking into show tunes, spontaneous Disney trips, sharing her faith and love of God, woodworking in her garage-turned-shop, and reading well-behaved books, and she is rarely seen without a Swig in hand. She’s Marvel over DC, beach over mountains, Colin Firth over Matthew Macfadyen, and salty over sweet—but don’t ask her to choose between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

Nicole tries to infuse each of her stories with aspects from her own love story, including witty banter, laugh-out-loud moments, and sizzling chemistry. She’ll always keep the kisses steamy and the bedroom door closed.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I totally would! I cannot believe that this is Nicole's debut novel because it is flawless!

This so much more than a simple romcom novel! This book covers such deep emotions, themes, and yet it is woven together perfectly with light hearted moments. I truly feel as if I have taken a journey with all the characters and have been with them when they hit their lowest points and their highest.

I absolutely adore Deke! He is such a stand up guy who cherishes his family deeply. I love that he gives Samantha a nickname and loves to press her buttons. But I also love that he honors and respects her. He challenges her, but at the same time is patient with what she needs. If you are struggling with self doubt, hardships and or need a someone to rely on, a guy like Deke is who you need.

I also love Samantha. I love her for the journey of self discovery we go on with her. I love that we get to see her as her walls come down and she finds what brings her true joy in life. She is someone who you just want to be your friend because you know she will care about you.

I love all the interactions between Deke and Samantha. From the moments that are truly embarrassing laugh out loud, to the ones that just make your heart warm and of course the ones that make you swoon. I cannot get enough of these two!

The secondary characters are also amazing! Nicole makes you love each and every person because they all have depth. She makes you feel emotions for them and she totally made my both laugh out loud and cry real tears.

This is a book I know I will not stop raving about. It is amazing through and through! Do yourself a favor and read this book as soon as it releases! It got me out of a reading slump and I could not put it down!

I’m putting this down at 25% for reasons:

- I’m not connecting with the FMC.
- The writing is heavy on her self therapy.
- Her first interaction with MMC is a drunk scene where she acts like a complete idiot.
- She’s really rude to the MMC for no explicable reason, and he is attracted to her and asks her out. Make it make sense.
- Dual perspective adds nothing but takes away all the chemistry.

I like the premise of the story, that she goes to an island to take a break from her life/career and that she thinks he’s married (but that resolved almost immediately).

The way it was executed just isn’t doing it for me.

Content- No swearing or crude content so far.

I'd like to start off my review by saying how much I have loved being a part of bookstagram for almost 2 years!! I have made so many friends and amazing memories!!

One of those friends of mine is the amazing and talented @authornicolejkimzey who wrote this book!! I absolutely love supporting new clean romance authors, but it's extra special when that new author is a friend. ❤️
Don't be deceived by this cute cover for "Breathing Under Water"! You may think it's just a sweet romantic comedy about a young woman who travels to the Caribbean to take scuba lessons from a very attractive man. (I was laughing when the FMC (female main character), Sam, arrived for her first scuba lesson!😂) This book is so much more than that, though!! I loved the island setting so much! I'm a fan of fall, but after reading this book, I just want to travel to Caribbean and soak up the warm sun!!

I absolutely loved this book! Nicole had me swooning one moment and having second-hand embarrassment for Deacon and Sam because of a lizard named Alex, the next! 🦎😬 Their meet cute was pretty funny too!! 😂🦞

One of my favorite things in a romance is when the characters can learn and grow from one another. Deacon and Samantha definitely have some things to work out about their personal lives and I loved the vulnerability these two showed towards each other. That and family were really the heart of this beautiful story. The chemistry and romance were pretty great too.😏

Thank you so much, Nicole, for allowing me to read your debut novel, "Breathing Under Water"! I am so excited to read everything else you will write and I already can't wait for book 2! There's many more things I could say about this book. Just know that I absolutely loved it and you will too!

I voluntarily read an advanced reader's copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own. Nicole's debut novel releases October 9th!!

I absolutely loved this book and cannot believe it’s the author’s debut novel-it is fabulous! Deke & Sam are perfect for each other and he is just literally 🫠 a good guy, patient, loving and supportive. I love how Sam rediscovers herself and conquers her fear. You’ll feel all the emotions reading this💛

Oh my goodness, this book was a rollercoaster of emotions! While it might look like your typical romantic comedy (and certainly had all the laughs to make it so), it was also so much more than that. Without giving away any spoilers, I will just say that this book takes on a few tough topics like abandonment and loss. Deacon and Samantha both have some hard things that have happened in their lives, and I absolutely loved the vulnerability in their story. There were moments in their story that were absolutely heartbreaking and had me in tears. The author did such a great job of letting us as readers know that there was more going on, without giving anything away until the right time. It kept aspects of the story unknown but gave enough of a hint that I didn't feel blindsided by anything.

While I enjoy the lightheartedness of a good romcom, it really is this type of story where the laughs are blended with the tougher, more real moments that always become some of my favorites--- they're the stories I will undoubtedly remember long after the end. As tear inducing as some of those harder moments were, the laughs balanced it out perfectly. I found myself laughing out loud so many times... the meet cute was just absolute comedy gold... and was only one of many such moments throughout. Like I said, it was truly an emotional rollercoaster, but I absolutely loved it!

Breathing Under Water is a closed-door romance with fantastic chemistry and some innuendos, but nothing beyond kisses and no language.

**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.

I really liked this book, and had to follow the author on Amazon once I was finished. I want to know when each of her books comes out because I enjoyed reading this one so much! It's so heartfelt. The characters are going through some seriously tough things, but the portrayal of resilience is refreshing and heartwarming. There's great romantic chemistry as well!

This book captivated me from the start! I love how relatable the characters are! Samantha’s journey of stepping away from her life to really find herself is beautiful and felt therapeutic even as the reader! Deacon is every woman’s dream! The playful banter and tension between Sam and Deacon is HOT! Nicole writes in a way that is just the right amount of steam! One of my favorite romcom’s this year!

This book has so much heart and humor! I loved the two MCs and the surrounding characters. There were heart wrenching parts mixed in with laugh out loud scenes. The relationship between the two is so organic and beautiful. And now I want to move to a tropical island myself… Thank you to Nicole for the ARC!

Deacon and Sam were brilliant. Their first few meetings were hilarious and I will never look at lizards in quite the same way! However, this is not just funny, the story is full of moving moments and I had tears in my eyes several times. Sam discovering ‘a found family’ was precious and her relationships with Deacon, Amber and Lou evolved as the novel progressed. This is a book you need to read, especially because there is nothing quite as precious as someone finding out how valuable they are, not just to themselves but to others as well. Highly recommend this book and looking forward to the next in the series.

This is a fun, bright contemporary romance filled with humor and vulnerability. Set in an island locale, it draws you in with its warmth and sunshine. The lead characters are both charming and deserving. It is cleverly written and takes you a fun, but transformative ride with the characters. I was especially impressed to learn this is a first time novelist. Definitely one not only to read, but to keep our eyes on. She is a natural and I predict will have more enjoyable options for us to devour in the future.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Sam & Deacon’s points of view

– a character has breast cancer – they have a moment where they get really sick & pass out during the events of the story

– a character has major aquaphobia & fear of abandonment

– our main characters each have a moment of accidentally being seen in a towel/their underwear

– it is mentioned that Deacon’s parents died of lung cancer & a car accident

– it is mentioned that Sam’s parents divorced & hated each other the whole time; they also weren’t/aren’t very attentive parents

Review:

I absolutely adored this book! Sam & Deacon were the best and I loved how much of Deacon’s sister & niece we got as well. Lou (his niece) definitely stole the show! I loved every single scene that had her in it with her no-nonsense attitude and blasé comments that rocked whatever was going on (mostly to the funny). I loved that Deacon gave Sam the space she asked for, even when it went a little too long for Sam’s taste. He was not only kind and considerate, but Deacon was also still ready to be there whenever Sam needed him. I loved that Sam knew herself enough to be able to tell Deacon that she wanted space, but would also like to get to know him better. I loved that Sam not only took the time to figure out herself first, but she also didn’t cut everyone out of her life to do so. She still kept the good friendships she had and made sure to seek out help if she needed it. I’m excited to see what happens in the next book and if we get some cameos from the main characters of this book!

Summary:

Samantha took a leave of absence from work to get away and find who she really is after having lived a life trying to be the best. When she arrives to her island vacation though, Samantha finds that she embarrasses herself more often than not when in the same vicinity of her neighbor, Deacon, which is just the start of her problems. Because not only is Deacon there for her bad moments, but he’s also fun, interesting…and appears to be married and has a child. Samantha shouldn’t be attracted to him and he certainly shouldn’t be flirting with her…

Deacon is interested in the new vacationer on the island after the first time he met her. Sure she may have been embarrassed by her actions then and every instance afterwards, but Deacon can’t seem to pull himself away from Sam. Not even when he knows that Sam might not be planning on sticking around after however long of a vacation she’s there for. But with every moment of kindness and caring Deacon sees Sam bestow upon Amber and Lou, he finds himself falling deeper. Soon he’s not going to be able to keep himself from pursuing any moments he can gather from his cute neighbor…

One of my favorite reads this year!!!

"I know my body is breathing, but my soul, most definitely, is not. I didn't even know souls could breathe until I noticed mine had stopped."

"This woman will be the death of me, but what a way to go."

"When life makes you feel like you're drowning and you don't know how you're even going to take your next breath, find what brings you peace - and that's your water. It's learning to breathe in the good despite the storms of life and how to not let those storms sweep you downstream."

Read if you like:
* Dual POV
* Witty Dialogue
* Flirty Banter
* Found Family
* He Falls First
* Amazing Supporting Characters
* Closed Door Romance
* Island Setting
* Crackling Chemistry and Swoony Kisses
* 1st in series but can be read as a stand alone

Oh. My. Heart!!! I loved this book so much! I am absolutely blown away that this is Nicole Kimzey's debut book. The pacing is spot on and makes it very hard to put down (even when it's over, I didn't want the story to end). The writing style grabbed my interest from the first page and didn't let go. The characters are witty, charming, flawed, and oh so very human. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster, laughing and swooning one moment, tearing up the next and before I know it, smiling again. Breathing Under Water is simultaneously lighthearted and deep.

I loved watching Sam fight to open herself up to finding joy and creating friendships. Steph's words of encouragement to Sam are perfect, "You have a heart of gold, and I feel like I am the only one lucky enough to see it. It's been under lock and key practically your whole life, and it's time to let it out of the cage."

Deacon was such a good counterbalance for Sam. He was kind and compassionate when needed, but he also challenged her and helped her to find her own strength. The chemistry between these two, especially once they start letting their walls down, is off the charts.

Favorites:
* Amber, Lou, Cheryl, Steph, Marco (so many great side characters!)
* All the nicknames
* Alex
* "Next time, give Godzilla the toast."
* The lobster wound
* "You are brave."
* The Waterfall
* Clever Title (and the meaning behind it)
* Beach Volleyball
* Blurt! (or really B.L.R.T.)
* "I'm so sorry I thought you were Lou!"
* Pepper-Girl
* "It'll cost you a secret"
* Coke or Pepsi
* Surprising Deacon in his office
* Towel Keepsake
* Mariana Trench
* The Epilogue

I can not wait to read the next book in this series! After the epilogue my fingers are crossed that we get more of Cooper and Steph in book 2!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: romcom
Content: makeouts

This is @authornicolejkimzey ‘s debut novel and it was so good! Samantha is a boss babe lawyer…who isn’t really living. She realizes she needs a change and takes a leave of absence from work to go to a Caribbean island and reevaluate things. Once she arrives, she keeps encountering Deacon in the most embarrassing scenarios.

Samantha has some THICK walls up but Deke is able to make her feel comfortable and safe. I loved seeing her open up and seeing her face her fears.

Things to Love:
🏝️island setting
🦞 lobsters (iykyk)
🫑 nicknames
👨‍👩‍👧 found family
🦎Alex
🔥 kisses
‼️the epilogue

Literally CANNOT wait for book two!!!

Quotes That Resonated With Me/I Loved:
•I need to breathe. Why can't I breathe? I know my body is breathing, but my soul, most definitely, is not. I didn't even know souls could breathe until I noticed mine had stopped.

•Something about Deke makes me feel like it's okay to show my cracks and flaws.

•What he has done for me is monumental. If I'm a kite, he is both the wind lifting me up and the string keeping me grounded. Yes, I'm flying--but I couldn't have done it without him.

•He is perfect. Or at least, he feels perfect for me. With my kisses, I try to tell him how much I love the way he holds me. I love the way he makes me laugh. I love the way he doesn't laugh at my fears but listens and makes me feel seen. I love the way he makes me feel safe in a way I never have before. I love the way he gives me wings to fly and make mistakes-but also a place to land and either lick my wounds or laugh at myself in a way I've never been able to.

•This woman will be the death of me, but what a way to go.

•I didn't realize that there could be a man who might help me see how strong I was on my own and that we could be even stronger together.

•"When life makes you feel like you're drowning and you don't know how you're even going to take your next breath, find what brings you peace-and that's your water. It's learning to breathe in the good despite the storms of life and how to not let those storms sweep you downstream."

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the author's debut novel and I'm definitely looking forward to her future releases! This is the first book of the Island Love Series and can be read as a standalone, though the characters for book two are introduced and I'm sure you'll be interested in reading their story as well. The book's blurb is straightforward, though be aware that panicking, abandonment, and an illness are things explored. Breathing Under Water is a wonderful debut, told through Samantha and Deacon's povs, about two hearts making a beautiful connection.

After spending so much time giving it her all in her job as a lawyer, Samantha has come to the realization that she doesn't have much else going on in her life and she doesn't like the feeling. She decides to take a trip to the island to have some time relaxing and face a fear of hers. What she wasn't expecting was to become friends and something more with Deacon. She knows her feelings for Deacon are special but she's still uncertain about her future. I absolutely adored Samantha and enjoyed reading her journey as she found things that brought her joy and made friendships. Seeing her be vulnerable and want to open up to others was heartwarming to read.

For Deacon, nothing is as important as his family. He cares and loves them deeply and enjoys being in their lives. Relationships aren't something that he has necessarily sworn off but he's also not going out of his way to enter one. When he meets Samantha, he feels a pull towards her and is curious to know more about her. As they spend more time together, she becomes one of his people too and he wonders if a life with her is possible. It's impossible not to love Deacon when he was a caretaker always wanting the best for his loved ones. He enjoyed flirting with Samantha and teasing her but only as much as he knew she was comfortable with. His feelings for her were genuine and he did his best to make her feel welcomed and be a support system as she faced her fears and doubts.

The romance is a slow burn but this is the type of story that has you hooked from the start so you don't notice the wait. The pacing of the story was excellent and there's enough fun and flirty interactions between them to keep readers satisfied with the buildup. I enjoyed reading Deacon and Samantha truly get to know each other before they gave in to the attraction and feelings between them. Their romance is a clean romance consisting of some innuendo and descriptive kisses. I loved all the moments between Samantha and Deacon, especially the embarrassing ones, but I loved Samantha's growth and Deacon sharing his burdens with her as well. This book is lighthearted yet it touches subjects that will touch your heart. As other reviewers have stated, this story feels like an experience that you went through alongside the characters. Aside from Samantha and Deacon, you will love the rest of the characters and be invested in their stories as well. Another thing that I loved about this book was the author's writing style. It was nice, flowed well, and definitely made me want to keep reading. It doesn't sound believable to say this is a debut novel but it does make me excited about the author's future projects. She made a fan of me and I can't wait for book 2 in the series and whatever else she writes.

This book is fantastic! Highly recommend. A very strong showing from a new author. I will absolutely be reading more from her as it comes. This is a romantic comedy in many ways, and there are some very funny moments. There are also some heavy themes and difficult issues that are addressed beautifully. I actually teared up, which I don’t do often with books. The title of this book has very strong meaning in the story. “‘When life makes you feel like you’re drowning and you don’t know how you’re even going to take your next breath, find what brings you peace- and that’s your water. It’s learning to breathe in the good despite the storms of life and how to not let those storms sweep you downstream.’” Samantha, having lost sight of a life outside work, takes time off for an extended vacation on a tropical island. “I need to breathe. Why can’t I breathe? I know my body is breathing, but my soul, most definitely, is not.” Here she has many embarrassing encounters with Deacon, her neighbour and the scuba instructor that she hopes can help her overcome her fear of water. Those embarrassing encounters can’t prevent the attraction they both feel, and the subsequent deeper attachment that builds. The characters are all great and engaging. Lou (Deacon’s niece) is adorable. Sam’s attempts to face and change what her life has become is admirable. “It’s time to face my fears and see if I recognize myself when I’m done.” The romantic tension is excellent and there are also beautiful sweet moments. I adored the whole soda nickname part to the story. The heavy themes in this story include abandonment, death, grief, stress, and terminal illness. This book is the first in the series and sets up the next story nicely. This is a closed door story with strong attraction and light innuendo. There is no harsh language. “It’s time to face my fears and see if I recognize myself when I’m done.”

I give this book 4.5 stars!

“You are brave, and don’t think, just do.”

SOME PEOPLE WADE INTO LOVE. OTHERS FALL IN THE DEEP END...

Breathing Under Water is a lighthearted and deep story. I really didn’t expect for this story to take me on quite a wonderful, yet surprising emotional roller coaster! 🎢 This story definitely had my whole attention. I was constantly laughing, swooning, tearing up, and before I know it, I was smiling again. This story is precisely and delightfully packed with such witty banter, laugh-out-loud moments, sizzling chemistry, and swoony steamy kisses, but with no explicit content! The characters in this story are witty, charming, flawed, so very human, and engaging. I loved seeing Sam fight for who she really is, in opening herself to feeling joy, and belonging with cherished relationships that love and support her for who she really is. I loved that Deacon not only challenged Sam but, with patience and love helped her find her own strength from within. There is definitely quite some sparkling, awesome chemistry with this duo! But, also there are some heavy themes and difficult issues that are addressed and handled with such care and thoughtfulness. Breathing Under Water is a story of deep connection and redemption! I look forward to more to come in this series! 📚🙌🏻🥰

“You’re all I want, even though I don’t deserve you.”

-Content: death of close family members, abandonment issues, divorce, fear of water, some drinking/hangover, cancer/sick/pass out moment, some innuendo.

“I need you to know that I will never abandon you. I will never forget you. And I will always be there for you.”

This tender story is sweet, funny, and full of depth and emotion. There are some seriously swoony moments, and it will make you want to move to a slightly empty and unknown island and soak up the waves and sunshine. I don’t even like the beach, and this book made me crave it.

I really liked how Sa’s internal reflection led her to her island oasis on an effort to figure out who she actually was. She does so much reconnecting with herself, and grows a lot. She also finds true friends, which I adore. Deacon is a good guy, who genuinely cares about his people, and once you’re his people, you’re stuck for life. I always love that kind of character. I liked his cheerful demeanor, and ability to draw out the good in people. Also, the family dynamic between Deacon, Amber, and Lou is marvelous (I promise it works and makes sense and is not weird; just trust me and read it), and the way Sam became welcomed into that family was so sweet.

There are some really funny moments in this one, that will have you laughing out loud. The setting is so well done, there are emotional hills and valleys that you’LLs experience right alongside the characters, and you’ll want to be a part of this little island home. It’s a delightful debut. Congratulations, Nicole!

*CW/TW: a couple of scenes with naked bodies (nothing seen or described, just know characters only have towels on); on page drinking; cancer; death of parents (previous); neglectful parents

**thanks to the author for the copy. These are my very own thoughts.

Full disclosure: I’ve never been a fan of reading. The last time I physically read a book was 10 YEARS ago. I decided to read this book because I know the author ;) Well, my initial “I want to support my friend” reason for reading this book QUICKLY changed within the first 3 chapters.
I was completely hooked and immediately and bought my own copy (because I was borrowing one) and finished the book in 5 days. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever finished a book this fast!
I found myself wanting to read rather than scroll on my phone. I looked forward to reading while my kids were taking naps. I stayed up well past my bedtime more than once just to see what would happened next.
I can’t say enough how much I LOVE this book. It’s got just the right amount of spice, emotion, and laugh-out-loud moments.
There were several moments that I personally connected with and it felt that these characters were practically real! I was satisfied with the ending, but sad when I was finished because I’ve become so invested in these characters’ lives!
It’s an easy read and was so great for someone like me who needed a good experience to get into reading more!
Love, love, LOVE it!

Breathing Under Water by Nicole J. Kimsey is an absolute gem of a novel that deserves every one of these 5 stars. From the very first page, I felt an incredible connection to Samantha and Deacon, the main characters of this story. Kimsey's character development is nothing short of exceptional; she brings these two to life in a way that makes you genuinely care about their journey.

What truly sets this book apart is Kimsey's intriguing writing style. It's not just a story; it's an experience. The words flow effortlessly, and each page is a genuine page-turner. I found myself eagerly devouring chapter after chapter, unable to put the book down.

Breathing Under Water is a beautifully crafted tale that explores the complexities of human connection, redemption, and self-discovery. Nicole J. Kimsey's storytelling prowess shines brightly in this novel, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a deeply moving and captivating literary experience. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all book lovers. It has certainly earned a 5-star rating from me.

Nicole Kimzey’s new book, “Breathing Under Water,” completely blew me away!! There were many points in the story where I was shocked that this is her debut novel!! I absolutely loved it! Deacon and Sam were so much fun to get to know! They had their quirks, their personalities, and their embarrassing moments and I loved it all!

I’m also a sucker for a cute kiddo in a romantic comedy. Lou was perfect for this book. She was so silly and so excitable, and I love how she just instantly loved Sam! I really enjoyed that this book kept me laughing, and also hit me in the feels. It was the perfect balance of humor and serious.

One of my favorite parts was the volleyball scene and the one with Alex!🦎 You just have to read to see why! 😆 But truly I loved how Sam started out uptight and stressed and was able to let go and become her true self!

And now I need to go to an island and play on the beach!! This amazing book releases this coming Monday, October 9th, and you definitely don’t want to miss it!!

4.5 stars, rounded up

i absolutely loved the writing style of this book. it was so fun, bubbly, and unique, without being irritating. the characters were developed super well, and all of them are so charismatic that it’s impossible to dislike them. each of them were unique with great chemistry both platonically and romantically.

my biggest complaint is how fast the relationship progressed. there is a reason for it that i don’t want to spoil, but the insta love type of relationships are not my personal preference. i also loved how there wasn’t the predictable 3rd act breakup, but i was missing the major relationship hurdle/conflict that makes the characters question the relationship before they end up together. the aforementioned reason is definitely a conflict, but it came off more like a life event they were experiencing than a potentially relationship shattering hurdle for them to overcome together.

otherwise, samantha and deacon had really great chemistry and it was so fun to read their story! this book is worth the time to read it, and i recommend picking it up!

“I love the way he makes me laugh. I love the way he doesn’t laugh at my fears but listens and makes me feel seen. I love the way he makes me feel safe in a way I never have before. I love the way he gives me wings to fly and make mistakes—but also a place to land and either lick my wounds or laugh at myself in a way I’ve never been able to. Right now, I love the way he is kissing me like I’m his only source of oxygen. I love ... him.”

Kimzey has a gift of writing her characters to where not only do they experience vivid emotions, but the reader is helplessly plunged into the feels alongside of them. It’s been a while since I was able to read a book and feel exactly what the main character feels: the joy, the triumph, the happiness, and even the grief.

So get a box of tissues for the laughter and (side plot) sadness and dive into this sweet romance today 💛

🌿 he falls first
🌿opposites attract
🌿 no third act break up
🌿 sweet and swoony kisses only!

I originally bought this book because the title intrigued me and I liked the cover art, hoping that I would love the story just as much. And let me tell you. I do. Deacon/Deke and Samantha/Pepper are two of my new favorite characters, and they are so good for each other. I love the banter, the romance, and the deep moments as well (lots of tears were shed).
Lou is such a fun character, as is Steph (so excited for her book next!), and I'm hoping to learn more about our lovely landlord and her story with Marco.
Having been on my own path of grief for the last 35 months, I appreciate how the author handled that aspect of the story, giving the characters space to feel what they needed to feel.
I cannot put into words how much I love this book. I've read it twice now (which is saying something, you should see my TBR pile) and had a hard time putting it down both times.
Such a well-written story, I will definitely be reading the rest of Nicole's books in the future!

There are a lot of positive for this book. I love the island oasis, Deacon, internal reflection, and many laughable moments.
I think my biggest negative was how rude she was for seemingly no apparent reason. And how they meet (drunk scene).

I liked the premise of the story and that she goes away to a tropical island. I also like that she understood she needed a break, so she took one.

It was great to take a break from real life (and cold weather) and pick up this tropical read.

.

*Thank you to the author for an e-ARC copy of the book. A positive review was not required. All thoughts, views and opinions are my own.

** CW - couple of scenes with naked bodies (nothing seen / described, character have nothing but towels on), drinking, cancer, death of parents, neglectful parents.

Nicole has been holding out on us. I can't believe the talent that this woman has with words. Like, are we sure this is her debut novel?!? Breathing Underwater had me laughing out loud, snorting unelegently, and tearing up... multiple times. I lost sleep two nights in a row because I couldn't put it down!

I have come to realize that I love stories that have character depth. Characters that are working on becoming their very best self and/or are healing. Nicole‘s book has that. Her FMC, Sam is healing and changing and the MMC, Deacon, is definitely the man for the job. He helps guide her and also gives her the space she needs. He respects her! He is definitely in my top 10, maybe even 5 of the best fictional boyfriends.

I loved this book so much. I don’t know what I was expecting when I started reading this, but I did not expect this. Sam and Deacon's meetcute was great. So many things are great. I just can't say more or else I will spoil it. I loved it. Plain and simple!

I hope everyone feels what I felt when they read this debut novel. I hope people laugh and cry with the characters as they grow together but also grow within themselves. I highly recommend this book!

*I was given a copy of this book for my honest review. These are my honest opinions.

Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.

HOLY COW. This. Book. It absolutely knocked my socks off. It twisted my soul up inside and then spit out a more pure version.

Everything about this book is exactly what I want from a book. Clean romance, but with enough steam to be decidedly swoon-worthy. Amazing character development. Symbolism, grief, love, family, friendship, women supporting women and men support men.

I loved every character, I loved every word, and I loved everything about this book. You'd never guess that this was Nichole's debut book. It feels like she's been writing for a decade.

I'll stop raving so you can go read it for yourself, but prepare to have your socks knocked off.

This is a very good debut novel for author Nicole Kimzey, who has an engaging writing style.

I like the chemistry between the main characters and there are some memorable secondary characters that I imagine will have their own stories to tell.

With any book marketed as a "romantic comedy" there are certain expectations, including that it will be lighthearted. There are some cute moments in this book, and many that made me smile. However, without giving the story away, it is pretty heart-wrenching in parts and you feel from the tone set at the very beginning that there is a sadness lurking.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who likes sweet romances with some sizzle.
