Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

One of the saddest volume that I've ever read. Robin, Merry Go, and Tom!!!! Innocent people being sacrificed for the sake of the 'government'.

One Piece, Vol. 37 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (347–357) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon continues the Water Seven Arc. The Straw Hats arrive on the scene and find Nico Robin with Cipher Pol Number 9 (CP9). Although she claims to want nothing more to do with the Straw Hat Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy and company attack CP9 so that they can talk to her.

They are quickly defeated, and CP9 departs to look for Franky. As the Aqua Laguna approaches, Franky has given Usopp and the Going Merry shelter. Soon enough CP9 arrives looking for Franky and his blueprints. Because his teacher, entrusted him with the blueprints years earlier, and forfeited his own life to insure Pluton never fell into the government's hands, and thus refuses to reveal their location.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. The plot thickens as Cipher Pol Number 9 desperately searches for the blueprints of Pluton and would do anything to get their hands on it – even fighting the Straw Hat Pirates, which they defeat rather easily. Pluton is a huge and highly advanced warship capable of mass destruction – something that CP9 and the World Government that they work for rather interested in.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 37 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

2025 reread : the first half of this volume is overshadowed by the second half in my opinion. Which is why I'm gonna basically mention only things from the second half ^^
I like seeing what is going on with Usopp and Franky. I appreciate the conversation they have before CP9 shows up. It's nice to get a little bit more insight into what Usopp is thinking.
It's interesting to me how as I reread One Piece now that I am older I get different things from it. I think when I was younger I read the Tom flashbacks and was enraged by the unfairness of what happened to him. Nowadays I'm still angered by the unfairness but I also take notice of the lessons Tom and Iceburg taught Franky, about never being ashamed or reject the ships/inventions he creates while also being mindful of what he builds because he won't necessarily be the one using it.

I love flashbacks. And those flashbacks are great. Tom is a truly amazing character. I love when a character that has so little time on page makes such an impact on me. Plus this sets up the current situation in several ways, not all of them obvious.

Been a while since we had a Straw Hat backstory - since we missed on Robin when she first joined - and longer still before we properly even confirm that Franky's going to join, although by this point it was more or less written in the stars that he would. It serves its purpose and greatly expands his character, though it's not my favourite overall. I rather more enjoyed his chemistry with Usopp and the revelations on Merry.

Meanwhile, the Straw Hats get trounced and the villains are properly established... well, so-and-so. Usually it's made pretty clear who is the true antagonist, the most powerful of the lot whom Luffy will have to face, with the rest being weaker goons that the rest of the crew could handle - but here, uniquely, they all come across as about equally strong and hand the entire crew its rear-end as a unit. Makes for a different sort of a dynamic.

Now there's fire, and also the promise of water. Things just continue to get worse.

Franky is shone under a new light in this latest story arc and the last portion of the volume is dedicated to telling Tom's humbling effect on Iceberg and Franky.

Quite possibly my favourite back story...I would give this 12 stars for 12 year old Franky.

The way that Oda shows so many parallels in some of these volumes is just amazing. Honestly, it’s actually that good I just can’t put these down!

This volume progresses like a bell curve. It has a slow and repetitive beginning. The flashback in the middle redeems and carries the entire volume. Then the resolution and cliffhanger sink back to the bottom of the sea.

Not since Jimmy Eat World have I lived so hard for the middle.

Another fire backstory, and the sense of the Straw Hats being completely outclassed for once was written really well.

⤷ 5/5 stars ⟢

tom's story is genuinely so sad and upsetting. he spent more than 10 years of his life dedicated to building something that will help the people of water 7—the same people who turned against him in a heartbeat at the end. i understand franky's rage, and my heart breaks for him 💔

Tqm, Eiichiro Oda.

Volume 37: Chapter 347-357
Saga 4: Water 7
Arc 15: Water 7

Franky has the blueprint of Pluton. CP9 hunt him down. 22 years ago, Franky or his real name Cutty Flam have become. Puffing Tom established a shipwright company called Tom's Workers.

Puffing Tom was charged as a criminal as he build Gol D. Roger's ship, Oro Jackson. His trial was postponed for another 10 years. In that duration, Puffing Tom must build a sea train that will connect Water 7 with another islands. Thry succeed built the sea train.

Cipher Pol 5 (CP5) who was led by Spandam trying to find the Pluton's blueprint. CP5 hijacked Franky's battle warships to attack Water 7. Puffing Tom was accused to do the attack and he went death penalty.

This volume tells about Klabautermann, a fairy that helps people on the ship. Going Merry has its own Klabautermann and he was the one who repaired the ship back to the Skypiea.

So curious and fascinated by Robin's past. Really want to know the story of how an 8 year old ends up on the radar of the world government and gets a wanted poster to boot. But first! A flashback.

Sigh.

I loved Franky's explanation of the little ship spirit inhabiting Merry because the ship was so cared for by the Straw Hats. It was very sweet and tugged at the heart strings.

Mr Tom was a fascinating character and I like seeing how the City of Water and the sea train came into being. But like,,, I just want to get back to Robin 😭 Also, where's Sanji??

WATER 7 ARC - PART 4
1. franky is growing on me LOL, his stupid crying and ballads over usopp's tales are hilarious, and his back story make him fit in with the crew perfectly

2. enies lobby then - the judicial island.

3. the fact that usopp knew the merry go is unsailable and STILL did the entire ruckus kind of makes me go 'bruh'. like, i get it, but...come to term with it WITH your team and not against them on your own.
