Sometimes labeled as controversial but always known as an honest seeker of truth, scholar and author Alden Thompson shares how Ellen White escaped a fearful view of God and discovered joy in the Lord. Thompson also explores the meaning of inspiration, looks at how prophets grow, and challenges our assumptions about Scripture and inspired writings.
I really do appreciate the insights of Alden Thompson. His book "Who's afraid of the Old Testament God?" taught me to take the Bible seriously in a much different way, and I simply cannot understate the impact it has had on my way of thinking as an Adventist and a Christian theologian. I appreciated some of his insights in this book as well, particularly what he says about inspiration and the fear-to-joy model, even if I cannot get my head fully around why God would want to use violence...
Even so, this book is a mess. It's disorganized and seems undone as a whole. It's unclear from the outset what it's about. Apparently, it hardly adresses Hell or how Ellen White came to a different understanding of this doctrine, it just makes plain that she did. Reading it through, I had no sense of what would come, though he repeated himself a lot, so I started to get the feeling that what I was reading would come again later. Suddenly, he's speaking about what living in Scotland taught him about wedding rings(?). My conclusion is that Alden Thompson needs an editor. So much for the interesting title.
