Shrimad bhagwat geeta Hindi, English and Sanskrit:

Rate this book

The original Bhagwat Geeta itself is only 700 verses. A very small book, however many of its copies/variations come with their own commentary which makes it long. I started with one such copy then decided to read the original translations without any commentary. That was a good decision since that made things relatively simpler and the original text’s integrity remained good for me.

The thing about this book is that even though it is thousands of years old, it is still highly relevant today because human nature itself hasn’t changed. We are still governed by our desires, fears , attachments and the like. This book clarifies in very straightforward terms the human nature and ways to elevate the human experience.

It takes place in the middle of a war, a battle among brothers, cousins, teachers, relatives and friends. There is no ambiguity or grey areas in terms of what this war would mean and in such scenario why a wavering Arjun must fulfill his duties as a warrior rather than putting his arms down and spare his kinsmen.

This is a dialogue between a God in human form and an exemplary warrior; Krishna doesn’t only tell Arjun why he should fight, he gives him the knowledge on Karma(which is more than just action), knowledge, life and death, human nature, what various state of actions are and what they mean, what happens to us after our death, the concept of Atma which is closer to soul but more. He also shows him his real manifestation and continue to help him understand the world.

With all his questions and Krishna’s answers we get to see a window in time which is still relevant, answers a lot of questions for us even today.

One great example of it would be the 16th chapter

"Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga" which describes the nature of the demonic people. And if you were to read that, you would see how aptly it describes some of the worst people we know in this world today.

This is a great book and everyone should read it atleast once in their lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT a religious book even though it features a God and a chapter dedicated to his Bhakti which means his worship. This book is about the nature of humanity and how an individual can navigate this world the right way.

Give this book a read, if anything start with chapter 16, that one chapter will make sure you know how it is relevant in today’s world. Then you can start at the beginning, in any case this is once in a lifetime book and we are very lucky that it somehow survived thousands of years through archaeology and various sources in its original form.
