Courtlight #3

Sworn to Conflict

Rate this book
The latest release in the high fantasy series which has drawn comparisons to Kushiel's Dart, Graceling, and the epic world of Tamora Pierce.

Ciardis Weathervane fought for the living dead and won. But worse than taking on a mass murderer, was her discovery that she had been deceived by her friends. Now she needs to not only fight a war in the North and survive, but also decide where she stands in the midst of competing sides.

A threat to all she holds dear lies in the North and her heart is not the only thing she might lose. A massive army awaits in the mountain pass, surging closer to the gates of the southern lands. Nothing the Algardis army has done so far has dissuaded their march forward and Ciardis finds out that her powers to enhance are needed now more than ever.

As she faces her greatest fears on the battlefields and her heart is torn between her love of Sebastian and loyalty to her family, Ciardis must choose her fate carefully. For in her path, lies the destiny of the empire.

This third novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Transfer.

Wow! Never a dull moment with Ciardis Weathervane!

The unsuspected continues to startle not only me but Ciardis herself, and all those who come into contact with her. But we're all up for the adventure of it. I have to say I just love the person that Ciardis is--loyal to a fault, compassionate, innocent in her reactions and honourable.
Last seen Ciardis had confronted the Shadow Mage and then somehow been teleported or transported. Where? Smack bang in the middle of a battle far to the frozen north is where! Forced into a healing sleep for two weeks Ciardis awakes and finds herself with her once prospective sponsor General Barnaren, Prince Sebastian, the Lady Serena her original feather brained sponsor, and others who have chased her here. The battle is masking a greater and more dangerous secret!
After a meeting with the Old Ones, the elementals of the Northern lands, and being gifted with a infinitesimal portion of their power, Ciardis is swept away once more to the Sanctuary.
During her time in the Northern lands Ciardis connects with lost family members, the Frost Giant Inga, her guard Kane, the Daemoni Thanar, the Lady Vane and a host of new and compelling characters.
Is Ciardis impulsive and rash as she's been accused of more than once? Does she respond from some hapless intuition, or is it a combination of intuitive understanding on some deeper level combining with her Weathervane gift, that produces these seemingly random responses? Responses that often turn out to be saner than everyone else surmises, including Ciardis. The interesting thing is how much loyalty Ciardis tends to inspire.
Another wild ride with Ciardis! The improbable is anything but! Hang on to your proverbial hats and enjoy!
Now, I'm hanging out for the next episode, Sworn to Secrecy.

Such a fantastic book! It picked up very quickly after the last book's cliffhanger ending, and then things were happening, and it was just so fantastic! And it's ending, oh, boy, was like Sworn to Raise, but bigger! I want to read more!

This is one of my favorites for good reason! In this installment, the series ups its complexity in spades, and we get a glimpse into one of the overarching goals of the series. There's lots of interesting things happening with the war in the North, and we meet some fun characters, such as Inga (a favorite of mine), Kane, and of course the invaluable Thanar. Or he will be, anyway. Love him! Not so much in this one, but later on. Also, lots of romantic things go down with Sebastian and Ciardis, yay! And lots of family secrets are revealed. This book has a lot going on, but it's paced quite nicely. I really enjoyed rereading it, and would highly recommend the series! 5 stars.

This is an Overall Series Review

I got these books from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank the author and the tour organizers for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this series.

Great characterization and well execution of concept. I also liked the plot very much and the good writing of the author connected me well with the story line. There are some grammatical mistakes and typos but other than that I liked the concept very much. The typos and the errors were well edited in the nest two installments.

Ciardis is a strong female lead and I adored her and loved her the most compared to the other characters. She is a kick-ass heroine and her character kept on developing and touching new heights of magnificence through out the entire series.

The world that the author created is awesome and the inclusion of each and every tiny details of the Royal lifestyle, their ruling and the other important things belonging to that era made this read an intriguing one for me.

There is action, adventure, suspense, mystery and passionate romance as well. Some of the back-stabbers were hard to believe and I was just stunned when those treacherous persons were revealed. There is betrayals, test of loyalty and dedication, the responsibility for ones duty and so much emotion. All these will bind you to the story and you wouldn't want to step out of the fascinating and magical world that the author created here.

A must read for all and don't forget to read the books in the order in which they are published. I'm anxiously waiting for book 4 - Sworn to Secrecy which will release on February 28, 2014!!!

**** I received an ARC copy of this book an honest review ****

Wow this book is full of surprise, this was not what I was expecting, I love this series and I have read all three books and cant get enough of it. this book jumped right in where the second one left of,Ciardis finds herself in the North, right in the middle of the war, she being unconscious for the better part of three weeks, her mage core being drained extensively. she knows there's something wrong at the warfront, and is determined to find out what it is while simultaneously defending Sebastian, but she realized that Sebastian is not a boy anymore but a man, and oh what's that for, their feeling for each other become more deep throw their bond and their magic complementing each other.

We also get to meet new characters, Ciardis also get to meet her brother, and who his fighting for, Ciadis always felt alone in the world without a family, and the appearance of her brother means everything to her. She's desperate to find out more about him cause they are family and she want's to be closer to her brother.

I really wish I could write more but I don't want to spoil anything.

I hope that when you read this that you enjoy it and love it as much as I did.

once again Author Terah Edun THANK YOU for introducing me to this amazing characters and this awesome book.

My Review: UGH! I finally made it through this book! Thank goodness I didn't purchase the entire series like I usually do because if it continues on the way it is going then it would have been a waste of money. While some of the editing did get a little better in this third book, it was still awful. It is so distracting when you are having to make word corrections in your mind while trying to read a book. I actually came across one where magic was used where clearly it should have been marriage, there is no excuse for that. With all those issues, the story itself also has issues. It is one thing to have great political intrigue but this book and series takes it to the point of no one really knows what the heck is going on. I feel like there are just too many plot lines going on at once for the author to write clearly, let alone for a reader to follow. The pacing is all over the place, sometimes moving extremely slowly and other times rushing to the point of glossing over major conflicts and important events. I must say though that there are a couple of sub-characters I rather enjoyed being introduced, Inga, Kane and Maris are all very intriguing but not worth committing to more books and dealing with Ciardis more. Speaking of Ciardis, she is an infuriating main character, gullible, naïve, ignorant, immature and with no set personality really. I am just glad to wipe my hands of this one.

MY REVIEW

Hello! Today I have the opportunity to Review of the 3 books of The courtlight series by Terah Edun .
Overall the plot is good, has a well-defined protagonist . The author knows very good and leads you down the path you want to develop . And likewise each book takes shape . The level is improving between each book, the effort that is taking the risk and the author will be undertaking notes. Landscapes and the secondary characters are taking shape and just hope that in the last book of the saga delight us with a surprise ending .
In the first book , like all series, we meet the protagonist, Ciardis Weathervane , a girl of seventeen, who has a difficult start but along the path of history , you begin to take charge of your life and that of her depend more people. Also we meet Sebastian , an heir to the throne is not surprising as any Prince .
In the second book after leaving gaining instead Ciardis will have new adventures and battles, know a little more depth to the characters, and the world around her . This is where the character develops further and the beginning of a path of intrigue . Will be connecting more characters which gives a significant variety .
In the third book , we have another story going around taking more adentrada way when the last of Ciardis Weathervane and how this might affect your current life. I think this is my favorite, the story surprised me, is a more mature and better management author in writing
Undoubtedly, it was a rollercoaster of emotions reading these books , it was amazing to grow with the
story and in the end you leave a great taste . I congratulate the author for it.

Another great transition from one book to another for Terah Edun! Ciardis Weathervane had so much happen to her in Sworn to Transfer from betrayal to blossoming love that the third book had to jump right back into the action but also provide some sort of way to get Ciardis back into the action with all the characters that I loved from the first two books since she was so removed from them. Having her be in a coma solved a lot of that! Being a fantasy book has it's advantageous ;)

Ciardis is thrown into wars and conflicts that seem so far over her head, until she shows you what kind of character she really is and that she has a back bone. I loved that we connected with her long lost family and that gave a sort of contrast to her life, from the beginning of the series where she is strong because of being alone and having to survive to the present were she not only is she falling in love but learning to have a family member to love. She maintained her innocent nature but also is turning into quite the young woman and I am happy to watch this progress unfold.

The story is thickening nicely as well. There is so much going on in this world that it seems difficult that we are going to wrap so many story lines up, but I am very interested to see where we are going. As we got to know more about the conflicts within the kingdom, I thought this installment did a very good job of maintaining a clear picture about what these conflicts are and where they are as well. That can be difficult in a high fantasy novel, and can sometimes get muddled with so much information. Not so in Sworn to Conflict and I thought it paced itself nicely. Ciardis Weathervane is the kind of heroine that I can picture myself following into the biggest, scariest battle to end to the world.....and that might be where we are headed here!

I have read the first three books of this series this week, so I will review this book for itself and how it fits in with the entire series.

The writing has gotten much better since the first book. I did not find myself stumbling through sentences and paragraphs anywhere as much as I did on the first novel of this series. There were still grammar errors and sentences that needed some work, but on the whole, it was much better and much easier to read.

Ciardis seemed more likable in this novel. She did not seem as stuck up or as snobbish as she had been in previous novels, and I found myself wanting to know her more. This led to a fault I found with the book. It did not matter how stupid she acted, everyone loved her. It got a bit grating after a while. I wanted someone to reach up and smack her a few times, especially when it came to the relationship between her and Sebastion. They apparently do not know how to talk in this fantasy world. Half of their problems would be solved if they just cleared the air between them. Everyone loving the heroine despite everything she did is one reason why I took a star away on this review. A heroine has to have at least one person hate her. It could be the kitchen grunt for all I care, but someone has to hate her.

The other star was lost due to plot twists. Don't get me wrong, I love a good plot twist, but I felt like I was on a jerky roller coaster. Every time I would pass a plot twist and almost have myself settled in the story again, another one would hit and I would be yanked upside down. I could not get and keep my bearings most of the time, and it made it quite difficult to stick with the story.

I forced myself through the first three of these to give a budding author the chance, but I think I am done with this series.

My thoughts:
I loved the first two books in the series, and was so happy to get a review copy of this one as well. The series has been compared to Kushiel's Dart and Graceling, and I think it defitely fits, both in theme and fast moving plot lines, as well as compelling characters and worldbuilding. There is romance, but not graphic at all, which I like, and Ciardis character grows as the series progresses and is becoming a competent young woman.
This book was even better than the first two, and I cannot wait till the fourth is released so I can escape into the world of Ciardis and Sebastian again!!!

Review: 4 stars
General: For me, the third book in the series was by the best. Only have a hiccup with Ciardis's character that threw me from giving this a 5 star review because it soured me towards her. The writing was well done and the action scenes felt fluid, which I can be picky about since I know how hard they are to write and this book was filled to the brim with action.

As with book 2 this book jumped right in and was strong from beginning to end. There were many darker elements in this book and I enjoyed the writing of them and felt it really added to the story the darker the plot went. There is also so much more action and good pacing in this book. I was finally drawn in from the beginning to the end and was pleased. The characters to me had fitting issues and were all believable with the exception of our leading lady, Cairdis.

Characters: Cairdis- Ciardis took a step backwards for me. She has something going on for her that I will not put here as i is a spoiler that somewhat gets her off the hook for certain things. However, I felt like it was being used as a crutch to emotionally cripple her and found the connection I had built with her fading with her detached actions.

This review and more on So Bookalicious

It has been a couple of months since I have read the Sworn to Transfer so it took me a while to recall what exactly happened in the previous book since this book picked up right after it.

Sworn to Transfer ended in the middle of a battle scene and to top it off Ciardis just find out that her life is not what she thought it was. It was now up to Ciardis to uncover the whole truth about her past, her friends and her family. So you can tell that she was confused about everything and didn’t know how to trust. But even though her life is a complete mess there is still a lot of humor in the situations she gets herself in.

Ciardis has grown a lot since the first books as well as Sebastian. They were both just kids when we first met them. But know they learned how to deal with their problems. And Ciardis developed more of her powers. Their romance was finally lifted to a higher level, which I loved since they had it coming since book one. The sudden change came a bit out of nowhere and they still have a long way to go but it was great to see.

Overall, this is a great YA fantasy series. Every book is different from the previous one in a refreshing way. I can’t wait to read my copy of the next book in this series!

The plot thickens and as I began reading book three I realized that this was not going to be a happily ever after. Ciardis is thrown into the never ending war of the north and unaware of what or whom she is fighting for. She quickly discovers the path of betrayal that leads further back then even Ciardis was aware of. Ciardis is left to figure it out pretty much on her own as the lies and secrets that have been told to her or with held start to surface she soon discovers that she must chose between her heart and her family she never new. Sworn to Conflict is a slammed down hike up your britches and either stand and fight or put your head in between your legs and kiss your bum goodbye. Forget the mushy cutesy love story as this book has no room for that even though Ciardis is torn between her heart and family she keeps rolling with the punches as war rages on and leaves her to be the deciding factor in how or if the war ends. I know that book three can not be the end of this series. I am completely hopeful that there is at least one more book to this series. I am hooked and enamored with The Courtlight series.

This is a wonderful continuation of the Courtlight Series, the third but not the final book..but I wasn't disappointed, definitely not! because half way through the book secrets are being revealed and unexpected wonderful things are happening which causes me to panic because..nOooo! I won't survive a rush ending so I was happy to learn that there would be a forth book and mmm maybe a fifth book? no news yet..anyway I'm happy with how the story progresses and how Ciardis keeps on meeting and becoming friends with unique uhm creatures and people. Sebastian growing into a dependable leader and a partner to Ciardis..Gosh!! I'm loving the ever growing chemistry between Sebastian and Ciardis, oh! how I love their blossoming relationship and I can't wait to read and know what happens next?! The intrigue, the secrets and conflicts equals to a great and exciting read..I want the 4th book NOW!

After defeating the Shadow mage from book two, Sworn to Transfer, Ciardis Weathervane touches a silver band that transports her to the war in the North. A combination of depleting her magic and the cold-weather causes her to lose consciousness for three weeks. Luckily, she arrived near the camp of Captain Barnaren, whose medic saw to her health. Faced with war and deceit, Ciardis must decide which side of the confrontation she is on.

Terah Edun does it again, with another enchanting book in the Courlight Series. She has accomplished an impressive task in keeping the series refreshing. Just when you think, you know the characters you find out something new about them. Sworn to Conflict is filled with twists that will keep you guessing.

I am looking forward to the fourth book, Sworn to Secrecy, to be released in 2014.

This book starts where the last one left off and cannot be read as a stand alone book.

It's not quite as good as book two, but the story goes non-stop and is very action-packed. There are many twists and turns and you never know exactly who to trust and what is going to happen next.

Ciardis really shows her loyalty and innocence and we watch as she finds out more about herself and the world around her. We feel her pain at betrayals and upsets.

We meet new characters and I really loved Warlord Inga and Kane. I hope to see more of them in the forth book.

We also get to meet new evils and terrors that we know are going to come in the next book.

I really look forward to discovering what is going to happen next to Ciardis Weathervane and the empire.

Why do I keep reading this series? I ask myself this question every time. I don't hate the books at all! But the cannon is shaky at best and things keep seeming to change at a whim. First, the narrator is telling us Ciardis has a small body, then she is telling us that she was not so small. Ciardis' personality is all things to all people and everyone ends up loving her. Ok, so I don't hate her either and the story is entertaining. But the lack of consistency is kind of distracting. But as far as a light high fantasy book goes, this one doesn't take itself too seriously and that is exactly why I like reading them. It was ok, I liked it, I will keep reading this series because it is definitely entertaining. But the writing is just distracting enough to keep it at a two star rating from me this time around again. Come on book four, give me a three star experience!

Review

We had left Ciardis struggling with a victory against a formidable enemy, but also with new revelations about her family, who all had hidden until then. Suddenly, the girl finds herself catapulted into the icy and terrible North, at the front, near a camp of soldiers. Ciardis get there almost without realizing it in a state of confusion and delirium, which will lead Maris, her healer, to decided to let her rest in a state of deep sleep. All it will take three weeks to heal and, while she is recovering, the balance have changed and her own reputation was ruined. When she wakes up, she discovers that the general of that army is Barnaren Marcus, who knows Ciardis and that seems to hide something. But Sebastian, the Prince Heir, seems to have changed before her eyes: more angry, passionate and decidedly more adult.
Will Ciardis be able to forget what her friends (and in particular Sebastian) have hidden to her, to defend her actions and to help once again the Empire?

Read a series also means seeing growth in the characters that are part of it and establish a relationship with them, almost a friendship one. With Ciardis and Sebastian the same thing happened to me and I am happy that now in the third book is evident as they change. Ciardis has become a young woman extremely intelligent and capable, able to transform into the savior of the moment or act knowing that she can count only on herself. Sebastian, however, has become more aware of his role as Prince Heir, but he is determined to put always Ciardis in the first place. For this reason, I really liked the romantic turn of this novel, that is much clearer than the other books, and with the long-awaited kiss (YAYYYY!!!).
Many characters will return: in addition to the General Barnaren, we will see the brother of Ciardis, Lord Crassius, and Serena, the sponsor of Ciardis which will have a very important role at the end of the novel. But there are also new characters to become attached very quickly: Maris, the Chimera, who heals Ciardis and grows fond of her; Inga, a “frost giant” and a warrior in the army of General; Kane, the “bodyguard” of Ciardis.

The North is the landscape that serves as background to the whole story and I must say that the comparison with the cycle of “A Song of Ice and Fire” was almost inevitable. On the other hand, it is a very dangerous place where hordes of wild creatures are gathering to attack the kingdom and it is not just a coincidence that Ciardis is over there.
The fact that every time the story takes place in a different location is a great choice in my opinion. Not only create a vision of the world in which the characters live, but it changes the scenario in which they are accustomed to act, putting them in front of new challenges and events about which they know nothing.

In conclusion, “Sworn to Conflict” is a great novel with many twists and turns, some really shocking, that will keep you in suspense until the next book, the last one in this exciting fantasy series.

Recensione in italiano

This book had a creative plot and a fast-paced storytelling. Unlike the first book in the series, I was reading too quickly to notice any mistakes on the part of the author. The author clearly has planned the direction where she’s wants this series to progress, and the plot is still quite intriguing.

In this book, you see less of Ciardis’s abrasiveness and Sebastian’s childishness, which really annoyed me in the first two novels. I believe the plot was progressing so quickly that there was less downtime in this book for these two’s folly.

I really enjoyed the addition of new characters to this installment. I think surrounding Ciardis with more interesting characters helps her seem less awful.

At times, the plot did proceed so quickly that I got whiplash. The author proceeded from one plot line to another so quickly that I did feel confused. I found myself re-reading to try to understand where the story transitioned from one point to another. This was especially prevalent towards the end of the book for me.

I would have loved to give this book 5 stars. But due to the many grammatical errors, I just can't. Which is unfortunate because it really deserves it.
The author is clearly very gifted. I enjoyed the world building and the fantastical array of unique creatures I found this story to be quite unique. A fresh and surprising story line bursting with new types of magic and powers.
It's full of twists and turns and lots of unexpected surprises.
I highly recommend this book if you can put up with missing words and improper word placement.
I truly hope Ms. Edun will get a proofreader as I would really like to continue reading her books.

I'm really getting into this series. After her abrupt transfer to the war zone which no one expected Ciardis finds herself with4 the army led by one of her prospective patrons. Her appearance shocked them all and the general's personal healer was called upon to help Ciardis recover from the unanticipated transfer and the final episode in Sworn to Transfer. The book ends on a cliff hanger that leads one to book 4.

Continuing to build the intrigue

The tangled web grows denser in this third book. Every character seems to become vital to some aspect of the intrigue. The pacing remains awesome and the plot is complicated but not unbelievable. I wonder how they'll maintain over the next 9 books...

Still enjoying the books and the heroine. Not too romantic and certainly enough going on! Usually I dont like cliffhangers but I knew this was a series from the start and it is not irritating me as much as usual. I intend to read on!

After reading the second book I was concerned that the pace in this series had slowed. But the pace really picked up with plot twists, adventure and more. I'm so glad I continued with this series and I enjoyed reading about the characters progression and relationships on their adventure.
