Lone Star Bride

Rate this book
James Webster didn't deserve any shot at happiness. Not when his actions had brought suffering to others. So he sought redemption on a remote Texas ranch. The last thing he needed was trouble in the form of the ranch manager's flirtatious, beautiful, innocent daughter, Alexis Powers.

Wanting what he shouldn't have was an altogether different matter. Alexis's soft mouth and slender body tempted him mightily and Jamie knew that marriage was the only honorable course. But once this Lone Star lady became his bride, could he prove worthy of her love?

Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.

She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.

Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.

Carolyn lives in the South, where romance thrives, and where the sun shines almost every day of the year. In fact, some days it is difficult to stay glued to her computer, especially when the birds are singing and the flowers are in full bloom.

She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.

If I can put a book down more than twice, I know this isn’t a book I’ll enjoy and unfortunately I was right. I’ll give it 2 stars for the vivid scenery and idea behind the book, but I just couldn’t get attached to the characters and it was just a very boring read. No love, only lust and what lust there was, was only thinly veiled by mediocre writing. The main characters had no chemistry and it almost seems like a throw away book, meaning it was an idea the author had and just needed to get it out without much care or thought for how it would actually turn out. Great idea, not so great execution.

Harlequin historicals are sweet reads. Hardly believable but a nice escape from the rigours of real life and memories of a harsh history.

Carolyn Davidson is an author that I enjoy. She has an interesting way of portraying her characters and action usually abounds. However, this book is a stinker. I can find precious few positive things to say about this story. I didn't feel any emotional attachment to either of the main characters or the plot ... and the plot was very thin.

Brace Caulfield (from TEXAS LAWMAN) sends his (former) deputy to take over a ranch that Sarah's under-aged nephew has inherited (Sarah is Brace's wife). James Webster (from OKLAHOMA SWEETHEART) has matured and fits in well at the ranch because he shares the work and does more than his fair share. James/Jamie has been warned by Brace about the current foreman's daughter who seems to be causing problems amongst the men with her flirtations.

When Jamie arrives, he doesn't find any flirting problems; it's all a fizzle. It doesn't take long before Jamie becomes very possessive of Alexis Powers. There really isn't any convincing passion between the couple, just a bit of lust. It seems to be just a story about a guy marrying one of the people on the ranch. Ho hum. There is a matter about a danger to Alexis, but it soon passes from view.

I found this to just be plain dull. A considerable bit of the language seemed hokey and trite.
