A friend picked this up at a used book store as she knew I was a Reiki Master Teacher and thought it might include some good tips to help spread the reiki word.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at the level of information provided in a respectful way: "Reiki can work for everyone, even someone who doesn't believe in it. The only person for whom Reiki doesn't work is the person who doesn't want Reiki. And that's okay, if that's you. Come back if you change your mind."

I liked how the author provided the multitude of Reiki techniques and review of the various branches helping to emphasize that it is not about a "right" way to a reiki session.

The book could improve by spending more time discussing how practitioners should set clear intention before a session to protect themselves. Another solid practitioner emphasis that was missing is that a practitioner does not "do" Reiki, which is a common misperception. Practitioners merely serve as an energy channel, and instead it the client actually allowing or doing the work through their higher self.

Regardless, I will definitely hang on to this as a client reference since it does a nice job helping those new to the practice.

This was comprehensive because I got some new information that wasn't in some of the previous books I read on Reiki.

I gave up on this book in the second chapter. Why? Because, without even getting to the actual "how to do reiki" bit, I got the impression that the author didn't have a clue what she was talking about.

There are "fun facts" sprinkled throughout the text to make it seem like this is supported by science. And I mean, science is good, but first of all, if I wanted to stick to things that were supported by hard science, I wouldn't be reading about reiki, and second of all, the facts she cites don't support anything! Some examples:

- The author says that organisms' biomagnetic fields = their auras/subtle energy (CITATION NEEDED), and then keeps repeating facts about them such as "scientists use x y z device to measure biomagnetic fields!" as though that supports anything.

- "You can capture auras on film using Kirlian photography." Kirlian photography is, if I'm understanding this correctly, when you lay an object on top of a bit of film and then run a charge through the object. The charge goes onto the film around the object and results in a pretty and admittedly aura-like print. But just because it looks like an aura doesn't mean it is one. If I look at someone with heat vision goggles, I'll see an "aura." If I look at someone through a foggy window, I'll see an "aura." If I look at someone in a smoky room with a bright light shining on them, I'll see an "aura." Why is Kirlian photography so special?

If that's not enough, the very first actual instructions in the book supposedly teach the reader how to see auras. Step one is "hold up your hand" and step two is "look at your hand." I'm not kidding. I think it had three steps, actually, the third step was something like "focus" but I already gave the book back so I can't look it up.

Maybe reiki is a real thing, but what I got from the first two chapters tell me is "this author doesn't know what she's talking about and doesn't know how to give directions," so I don't think this is the book for me to learn about it.

I am Reiki 2 certified and I use this book as a reference to the craft. I love it. Its so easy to read, understand, and do.....Reiki is simply energy work. Manipulating energy to unblock your bodies Qi and to restore balance to your chakras. Sounds strange I know...but it works..and it feels amazing. Please do not buy this book thinking you too, can become a Reiki master without the proper tools and training. This is just a reference guide for those already certified. You have to be given the proper attunements before being able to perform this work. Think of it this way. You are a candle with a wick. Everyone is. But you cant say you are a lit candle, just because you have the wax, the wick, etc...Someone who is already a lit candle has to pass on their light to you. Then you will have the fire, and be able to pass it on to someone else once you master what needs to be. You must recieve an attunement after your training, in order to have that light pass on to you so that you are free to administer this gift to others. Its like flipping your light switch. The switch has always been with you. You just need someone to flip it. Our bodies are made of electricity and energy, and like getting massage, it too gets in a funk and needs to be rubbed out. Its a wonderful thing. This book will help you better understand it.

Like with any "for dummies" books, this one, too, is a great reference work for those who want to learn what Reiki really is. An objective and netural, and well researched book, indeed.
