Ministry of Presence

Rate this book
MINISTRY OF PRESENCE speaks to the heart of chaplaincy. It deals with the history and definition of chaplaincy as well as the chaplain's call to ministry and relationship to his church. Specific challenges within the framework of chaplain ministry such as pluralism, prayer, and proselytizing are also addressed.MINISTRY OF PRESENCE would easily fit in the library of those already in the chaplaincy, chaplain candidates who are preparing for ministry, or anyone who is interested in learning about chaplaincy. The principles presented are not simply theory but have been born out of the context of Whit's experience and practicing what he preaches. His insights will encourage and challenge anyone seeking to minister from a biblical perspective in any venue of chaplaincy.

As a chaplain in the United States Service Command of America, I found this book an invaluable tool in forming my philosophy of chaplaincy. For Christian chaplains, there is no more fundamental text than this. Its emphasis on the oversight of the local church and its application of strategy is well-supported by Scripture and practical experience. Moreover, as an independent Baptist with a distinctly fundamental background, I found no threat within the pages, but rather a refreshing support. If you are going into Christian chaplaincy, read this book. You will be greatly helped!

“There is little doubt that the presence of a representative of God is an effective agent for solace in tragedy.”

Whether you are a chaplain, training as a chaplain or considering chaplaincy- I would say this book is for you.

Woodard presents his material throughly and sets his foundation on several instances and readings from Scripture.
This work will enlighten your understanding, encourage you in your position and help guide you in your next step(s) as you continue what is largely revered by the secular (and at times the sacred) world as the ambiguous journey of a chaplain.

Personally, I needed these words of encouragement and instruction, and per Woodard’s estimation- I’m not alone.
