Fungi is a thought line of a man looking for himself and how the world works. The story moves on fast, too fast in my opinion, and focuses more on the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions than what is happening around him. I mean, it’s a life long story, but I don’t know that much of what happened. The man travels, studies nature, joins an army, ends up in Java and leaves. None of this is really spoilers because there isn’t anything that really surprised me. He falls in love, he makes love, watches the suffering and dying of the people around him, but most of all he keeps just poking at his life through a serial of theories and aforisms instead of facing them head on. I’ve never been much of a philosopher even though I do think alot, too much. The way of approach in this book just left me a bit irritated, because I wanted to precisely know what happened instead of reading a row of adjectives about how that something (that wasn’t described tangibly anywhere) felt to him. It was like I was his psychiatrist or something.
Anyway, the book did have it’s moments and the ending made me a bit sad, but in the process I didn’t enjoy it much. I wanted to enjoy it, I approached the book with positive curiosity, but after realizing it was just a never ending list of adjectives and changing philosophic theories, I started to really loose my drive. It could’ve been a really interesting book with just a different kind of approach.
I would recommend the book to people who like to daydream through it. People who are more interested in philosophical thoughts than an actual storyline (or a storyline formed by thoughts instead of concrete events).
Ant viršelio parašyta, kad tai meilės romanas, tačiau man pasirodė, kad ji apie požiūrį į pasaulį. Meilė kaip esminė arba nereikšminga būties sudedamoji. Knygoje daug apmąstymų, filosofinis kontekstas, tačiau man labiau patiko pirma knygos dalis, kai šio filosofinio konteksto mažiau. Tuomet siužete daugiau gyvybės ir jis tikresnis, labiau įsimenantis. Autorė man nebuvo žinoma, bet nesigailiu perskaičiusi - man nauja ir įdomi autorė.
