Thirty-one-year-old Natalie Price has a tough job. A superintendent in the Massachussetts prison system, she rules over inmates' lives just before they get released. She's had to fight hard to be taken seriously in this harsh world, a world that is mostly male--on both sides of the bars. But she believes in what she's doing, and she's good at it.
Now, however, she gets the biggest challenge of her six-year career when a good friend, a college professor who was teaching one of Natalie's charges, is brutally murdered. Natalie had gone out on a limb to give this inmate, a convicted rapist named Dean Walsh, this opportunity, and it looks like Dean certainly made the most of He's the prime suspect. But he's not the only one, and Natalie's job--maybe even her life--rides on the investigation.
Peppered with the gritty details of prison life, Title delivers a gripping, atmospheric story bursting with authenticity. All in all, Killing Time is an ambitious beginning to what promises to be an outstanding new crime fiction series.
Romance author Elise Title started writing romances as an escape from her job as a psychotherapist in men's and women's prisons. Though her romances are largely lighthearted and funny, she also writes dark thrillers as a way of dealing with her past job. She also published under the pseudonym Alison Tyler.
Rating of 2 stars. Not the worst but neither the best. Lead character seems to be irrationaly sure that the felon is not guikty. Neither does apparently know anything about the people, that surround her and to me,appears to be unable to see blaring red flags in the men around her.
That said I expected a bit more intrigue and a little, less stumbling around blindly. I may or may not give the 2nd instalment a go at some later date.
I appreciated this story, although rarely found myself curious or on the edge of my seat or gripped by what was going to happen next. For those reasons it took me longer than normal to finish killing time. My appreciation was for Nathalie and Leo as I felt interested in them, as well as the insight into life of inmates released.
Lots of suspense. I was constantly wondering who the killer was - never truly know someone, not even your best friend, but love is found along the way. I enjoyed not knowing the ending and how everyone could fit the guilty role.
It took me a while to actually like and be interested into this book, but once it happened, I looked forward to reading and knowing what happens next. I thought from the beginning that Dean was innocent, since it would have been too easy. But I wouldn't have guessed that he was actually the murderer. Very well written. The only thing that bothered me were the out of control hormone levels. I didn't particularly enjoy all the afairs surrounding the main character Nat. However, I did like the retationship between Leo and Nat.
