Really enjoyable book! The characters and story telling are so well developed that you can't help but FEEL everything. Good book for YA to teach them the importance of trusting your loved ones.
I think it will come as a surprise to many- but Sarah was easy to relate to and understand from a teenager’s perspective, so her story is one that could serve to help others in similar situations. The one missing bit was the ‘warning signs’ – she was so malleable to his wishes that it won’t strike many as his problem-not hers , although with the story progression, the disturbing elements of the relationship only serve to become more concrete.
I will issue a completely strong and heartfelt warning here: while this story is fiction, the issues that it raises are so far from fictionalized that it would do parents as much good to read this book as their own young girls at home. We always like to believe that we would never miss warning signs, or never misunderstand our actions and their effects, this story proves that false.
With a deft hand, Shannon Kennedy introduces readers to a teen girl who apparently has it all: quarterback boyfriend, good looks, good grades and even loyal friends. But scratching that surface shows a myriad of issues, at home, at school and even with her relationship. The characters in this story are well developed and yet not without their own issues: it does, at times, seem as if there are too many problems for such a small group, lessening the issues intensity and impact. But what does come through is the insidious nature of emotional and physical abuse, the damage it leaves behind and the fact that support and encouragement of friends is not always enough –it often requires professional interaction and intervention.
This was a book that was a page turner: issues, excuses and actions flow swiftly over the pages as we are headed into a struggle for Sarah’s well-being. I encourage readers to read and take the message of this story to heart as they learn from the trials that this girl is subject to.
