Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
I love Spurgeon's honesty. I discovered things about myself I particularly didn't like. No one likes themselves when the truth hurts. Spurgeon has a gentle way of showing how we can let God down and hurt others unnecessarily. He readily admits how it upsets him more because of his deep love for his Lord. For me it has brought me even closer to the Lord. I have a deeper relationship with Him and have Charles Spurgeon to thank for his time in writing this book. Wish I could have met up with him.
This is a few of Spurgeon’s sermons on the subjects of prayer and praise. I like his style, reasoning out a lot from the passage and encouraging simple Christian living in faith and assurance.
Although not a,great follower of the author, this book is truly worth the time spent with it, one must though as they read stop and ponder, or meditate on the context which are light and life in abundance.
