This is another of his curious modern folktales / fairy tales / magic realist stories. Murakami takes this phenomenon to another level, in which monkeys have become like leprechauns or elves, who steal personal items from folks and explain themselves when captured.

القرد الذي يسرق الإسم. هل يقصد موراكامي ضياع الهوية؟ أي هوية و رواياته و قصصه لا يظهر فيها الكثير من الهوية اليابانية في المعيشة من مأكل و ملبس أو في نمط الحياة من سيارات و موسيقى و ثقافة و منزل و طريقة حياة في العلاقات و الانفتاح و التحلل الأخلاقي و الجنس المفرط و الشذوذ. فعن أي هوية يتحدث؟
لا أعتقد أن الغيرة لها علاقة بظروف موضوعية. أي إذا كنت محظوظة فلا تشعرين بالغيرة. و إذا كنت محرومة من الكثير من الأشياء فلا تشعرين بها. الغيرة لا تعمل بهذا المنطق. إنها أشبه بورم ينمو بداخلك و يصبح أكبر فأكبر دون أي أسباب منطقية. حتى لو علمت بوجوده فليس ثمة ما تفعلينه لإيقافه.

ما انهيت هذه القصة الغريبة ، حتى تراءى لي بأن اسمك أي ما كان معناه، كينونتك ما هى إلا ذاك الضوء الذي يشع منك ، وتلك الظلمة التي تندس عميقاً بقلبك...كلاهما معاً هو أنت...
من أين جاءتك يا سيد "موراكامي" فكرة أن قرداً يسرق اسم أحدهم فينسى بدوره اسمه ويرزح تحت وطأة كابوس مريع ؟؟.. قرد ..!!!
لابأس، إن سر عبقريتك يكمن في مخيلتك الجامحة التي لا تتوانى في أن تجعل قرد شيناغاوا سارقاً يملك قلباً شغفاً بالأسماء...

হারুকি মুরাকামি'র বাছাই করা ৮ টি ছোটগল্পের সংকলন। অনুবাদ একদম বিশুদ্ধ পানির মতো। সব্যসাচী মিস্ত্রী'র প্রচ্ছদ দারুণ।
প্রথম গল্প 'ফার্স্ট পারসন সিঙ্গুলার' পড়ে শেষ করার পর আমার মনে হইসে বাতিঘরের সব বই মানুষ হয়ে গেসে আর মানুষগুলো বই হয়ে গেসে। আর নেপোলিয়ান ভাই গ্লাসে কুচিকুচি বরফসহ মদের গ্লাস নিয়ে আমার সামনে বসে আছে।
'দ্য ইয়ার অব স্প্যাগেটি' গল্পের শেষ লাইনে এসে একেবারে থ হয়ে গেসি। আহা নিঃসঙ্গতা আহা!
'কনফেশন অব আ শিনাগাওয়া মাংকি' পড়ে তো আমি নিজেই বানর হয়ে গেসি। যে বানর মেয়েদের নাম চুরি করে মনের মধ্যে রেখে তাদের নিভৃতে ভালোবাসতে পারে।
'স্যামসা ইন লাভ' পড়ে মনে হইসে এত এত সৃষ্টির মধ্যে মানুষ হয়ে জন্ম নিয়ে মন্দ হয়নি। জীবনটাকে ভালই এনজয় করতে পারতেসি বইয়ের সাথে।
আর বাকি চারটা গল্পও মনে রাখার মতো। বিড়াল হৃদয় খুঁড়ে খায়(ম্যান-ইটিং ক্যাটস) আর মনে আগুন জ্বলে(বার্ন বার্নিং)। এইতো মানুষজন্ম নিখিলেশ! জানালায় স্মৃতি ভাসে(আ উইন্ডো) আর সময়ে সবই আসে(বার্থডে গার্ল) শুধু ধৈর্য আর অধ্যাবসায় লাগে।

It’s more like a tumor growing inside you that gets bigger and bigger, beyond all reason. Even if you know it’s there, there’s nothing you can do to stop it."
Murakami's writing style and magical realism, a nice combination. But a cliched plot nonetheless - good cop bad cop, and a victim successfully trying to press the perpetrator for more details. But in classic Murakami style, while the plot answers the central question, it opens a forest of questions at the same time, thus leaving the reader guessing.

প্রত্যেকটা গল্প পড়ে অনেকক্ষণ চুপচাপ বসে ভাবতে হয়। মুরাকামি সারাজীবন মুগ্ধ করে রাখবেন। বিষণ্ণতার এত সুন্দর রূপ হতে পারে তা মুরাকামিই দেখিয়েছেন।

হারুকি মুরাকামির ছোটগল্পগুলোর লেখনী তার উপন্যাসের চেয়ে কিছুটা আলাদা। উপন্যাস পড়ার সময় যেমন একটা ঘোরলাগা ব্যাপার কাজ করে গল্পের ক্ষেত্রে তা কেমন যেন খাপছাড়া গোছের লাগলো। গল্পগুলোর ভেতর আসলে কোন গল্প নেই তারপরও চরিত্রগুলোর সাথে কানেক্ট করা যায়। নিজেকে গল্পের চরিত্র মনে হয়। আসলে মানুষের জীবনের হতাশা, অনিত্যতা, নিঃসঙ্গতা এসব নিয়ে কোনো গল্প হয়না। এ বিষয়টাই গল্পগুলোর চরিত্রের দ্বারা নিজের জীবনের প্রতিচ্ছবি হয়ে ফেরে।

أصعب شيء في كتابات "موراكامي" هو أن يترك العديد من الأشياء الغير مفهومة والتي تترك فراغًا كبيراً بداخلك بعد ان تنتهي من قراءة مايكتبه.
تمنيت لو وضح اكثر قدرة "السيدة ساكاكي"، وكيف تمكنت من حل هذه المعضلة.
وكيف تمكن القرد أن يتحدث بسهولة!

মুরাকামি আর হুমায়ূন আহমেদের বই! কেমন একটা ঘোর লাগানো! হারুকি মুরাকামির যেকোনো বই পড়ার পরই এক নিঃসঙ্গতা জেঁকে বসে। অদ্ভূত গল্প,বোঝা যায় না ঠিক, আবার পড়তেও ভাল্লাগে!শব্দ দিয়ে এই বইয়ের রিভিউ বোঝানো যাবে না মনে হয়,পড়লে বুঝতে পারবেন।

মুরাকামির ৮ টা বাছাই করা গল্পের সংকলন এ বইতা। মূলত ৩.৫ স্টার। তবে দুয়েকটা গল্প এত ভালো লেগেছে যে ওগুলো সংখ্যায় আর দুয়েকটা বেশি হলেই ৪.৫ তারা দেয়া যেত। আর আলভী আহমেদের অনুবাদ তো লা-জওয়াব। বইটা পড়তেই হবে এমন না, তবে পড়ে দেখতে পারেন।

You’ve shut this painful reality up in a small dark place deep in your heart and closed the lid.
You’ve tried to suppress any negative feelings.
This defensive stance has become part of who you are.
Because of all this, you yourself have never been able to deeply, unconditionally love anybody else.

This quirky tale which is the choice for this week's short-story book group is available online from The New Yorker Magazine 2006/02/13. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20... . It is a precursor for Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey .
Murakami has written a thoughtful, yet mock tale of a young Japanese lady who has been confronted with a persistent dilemma. She has sought the help of a counselor to help her with her troubling inability to remember her own name. In this age of recognizing the affliction of Alzheimer's Disease, she fears that the seeds of this have been erupting. This story has evolved into the world of magical realism toward a solution of her problem.
I was able to maintain my interest in this tale as a respite from the difficulties surrounding civilization these days. I probably would have been hesitant to read this on my own. It should be an interesting discussion with my book group.

It's incredible how the simplest thing Haruki Murakami could write about often holds so much meaning!
My understanding of this short story would be (spoilers ahead)
.
The name tag represents our identity, the very first thing we receive in life from our parents, carrying with it all our experiences, both good and bad, it's like a hidden treasure chest of memories.
.
Mizuki losing her name tag felt like losing that connection to her past self, which led her to create an alternative for it (aka the bracelet with her name on it) this could represent mizuki isolating and sabotaging herself from accepting that past trauma by creating a fake replacement for it, a love and affection she never received from her family, It's as if she tried to cover up her pain with a shiny band aid of love and attention, but in doing so she lost touch with her true self.

Then there's the monkey. He represents that wake up call we all need sometimes, a voice that finally breaks through the fog in our minds. When the monkey revealed the truth to Mizuki, it was like a light bulb moment, a moment of realization and awakening of her unconscious mind causing her being aware of her past trauma, a moment when she could finally accept who she truly was.

হারুকি মুরাকামির আটটা গল্পের সংকলন এই বইটি।
প্রতিটা গল্পই আমাকে বাস্তব পৃথিবী থেকে টেনে হিঁচড়ে নিয়ে গেছে অন্য এক জগতে। প্রতিটা গল্প শেষে একটা ঘোর লাগা অনুভূতি কাজ করতো। তাই হয়তো একটা গল্প শেষ করে সাথে সাথে আরেকটা গল্প পড়া শুরু করতে পারিনি।

This is a review for both, A Shinagawa Monkey, and Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey (the follow up)

Two very short stories I found online by Haruki Murakami, who I consider among my all time favorite authors.
The first one, A Shinagawa Monkey, is from the prespective of a lady, who goes through a strange symptom of forgetting her name sometimes. The key themes deal with identity, emotional connection to ourselves and the world around us, and the struggle to accept failure and face a difficult life due to things you never controlled as a child. Beautiful and sparse in its language, yet very effective.
The second one, Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey, is about the monkey (who appears on the first story), and his interaction with an man in a remote inn on the mountains. The language here is very evocative of multiple sceneries, and very rich. The monkey's character represents many different symbols in our lives, and has some themes around memories, psychology of isolation and obsession, and the human struggle to get accepted and be useful.
Both stories complement one another nicely, and I really enjoyed their tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. They have some classic Murakami themes along with magic realism done right.

September 29, 2024Read this during post-run coffee cooldown. It's so beautiful! It brushes upon the idea of unrequited love and I feel it to be more earnest when compared to White Nights (I only compare because it's the last book I read). My introduction to Murakami literature, excited to read more.

We are always forgetting our names and trying fix things which can't be fixed unless we break parts of our being , maybe we need our names to be stolen by shinagaw monkey to make him tell us who really care for us and who doesn't.

এই বইয়ের অপর নাম নিসঙ্গতা । প্রত্যেকটি গল্প নিসঙ্গতার একটি প্রতীকী গুরুত্ব বহন করে । মোট ৮ টা গল্প আছে ।যেমন, প্রথম গল্পটি একটি মাল্টিপল পার্সনালিটি ডিসঅর্ডার এর প্রতীকী গল্প ।“ম্যান ইটিং ক্যাটস “ গল্পে পালিত বিড়াল যখন নিশব্দে এক বৃদ্ধা কে ঘরের মধ্যেই খেয়ে ফেলে, সেই বিড়াল গুলো তখন নিসঙ্গতার প্রতীকী অর্থ বহন করে, যা মানুষকে নীরবে শেষ করে দেয়! “সামসা ইন লাভ “ একটা শারীরিক চাহিদার ঊর্ধ্বে এক অদ্ভুত প্রেমকাহিনি ।”বার্ন বার্নিং “ গল্পে দেখা যায়,কিভাবে এক উচ্চবিত্ত প্রেমিক তার নিঃসঙ্গ প্রেমিকার জীবন পুড়িয়ে দেয়,কারণ তার শখ পরিত্যক্ত গুদাম পুড়িয়ে দেওয়ার ( একটি প্রতীকী অর্থ)যে কিভাবে নিঃসঙ্গ মানুষ রা হারিয়ে যায় । আর বেশি কিছু বলব না । অনেক বেশি স্পয়লার হয়ে যাবে!

Murakaminin yeni kitabının çapdan çıxdığını görüb sevindim! Amma sonra mündəricata baxanda gördüm ki, kitabın içindəkilər 1. hekayələrdir; və 2. köhnə hekayələrdir. Başa düşürəm ki, yazıçı da yazmadığı vaxtlarda da kirayə və kommunal pulu ödəməlidir. Amma biz daimi oxucuların ürəyiylə də belə oynamaq olmaz axı. 😅 Və indi yaxın vaxtlarda başqa bir məsələdə özüm oxşar taktika işlədəcəm deyə hər şeyi başa da düşürəm eyni zamanda. 😂 Ona görə də pandemiya kimi çətin bir dönəmdən sonra təkrar da olsa, bu hekayəni görmək xoş idi. 😊😊😊

اليوم السادس عشر من تحدي ٣٠ كتاب ورواية في ٣٠ يوم
رواية قرد شينغاوا لهاروكي
في هذه الرواية يتفوق هاروكي على نفسه حيث انه استطاع اني يجعلني اعيش حياة البطلة من منظورها بكل معاناتها في نسيان اسمها ومنذ الوهلة الاولى وانا اتحرق شوقاً لاعرف السبب غير ان الرواية لهاروكي لذلك وجب ان تكون بنهاية تعصف بالمخ او ربما هذا اللون من الافكار الجنونية تتوشح به الثقافة اليابانية بالكامل
الرواية فكرتها بسيطة عن فتاة تعمل في شركة هونداي تصاب بحالة نسيان لاسمها فقط ف تبدأ بالبحث عن علاج ..
النهاية مرضية والسبب مقنع والرواية ممتعة ارشحها لجميع الاعمار ..

للاسف حينما تحاول نسيان او طمس جزء من مشاعرك او ذاكرتك لابد وان يتم طمس اشياء اخرى معها من شخصيتك دون وعى وقد تكون تلك الاشياء هى الممثلة لهويتك
