As a Note, I do not use AI in any way to write my books. Lots a sweat equity goes into my writing, not computer generated.
Winter Austin perpetually answers the question: “were you born in the winter?” with a flat “nope.” Having returned to her hometown, Winter has stepped into the chaotic world of a full-time wife, mom, author, and employee.
A lifelong Mid-West gal, Winter rediscovered her love of her beloved Iowa with its hot summers and snowy winters. She grew up listening to the captivating stories told by relatives around the table or a campfire. Since becoming a published author, she learned a mindset of a glass half-empty personality makes for a perfect suspense/thriller author. Taking her ability to verbally spin a vivid and detailed story, Winter translated that into writing deadly romantic thrillers. Combining her love of all things rural, agricultural, and military, she’s turned her small town life upside down.
This was a very good romantic suspense. The heroine, Nic, is a deputy and a former Marine sniper suffering from a bad case of PTSD. She's called on a case where a man, Dusty Walker, was holding his wife and kids hostage, threatening to kill them. He's talking crazy about atonement and how he has to repent of his sins. Because his behavior is escalating and negotiations are going nowhere, the sheriff tells Nic to take him out if she has the shot. When the man shoots his wife, she has no choice but to fire before he can hurt the kids. This brings back memories of the war and something traumatic that happened to her while deployed. We find out that Nic is estranged from her family and especially her father, a general. The story of why this is so is woven into the story and explains the reason her PTSD is so bad.
Con works for the police. He and Nic are paired up after she kills Dusty. An apparent suicide seems like an open and shut case but when another person takes their own life and the word atonement and talk about repenting comes up again, they find out there's more to it than they first thought. Is it possible someone is coaxing the victims into killing themselves? Just who is The Priest one of the deceased referred to? We're the victims connected to one another? Will there be more killings before they can solve the case?
Just when Nic starts investigating, her sister, Cassy, shows up. She too is in law enforcement and has no clue as to why Nic took off and has been hiding from the family. Nic is furious at her for tracking her down and is sure her father will soon follow, in spite of Cassy's assurance she covered her trail. She blames the General for her current circumstances as well as for the death of her former spotter and lover, Aiden. She'd just as soon see the man dead than have to deal with him. She has always felt he didn't love her and his actions on the battlefield involving her seem to prove it.
As a result of her relationship with her father, Nic has difficulty dealing with Con's interest in her. It's not that she isn't attracted to him but she's never had any male figure in her life show her real affection and love. Even though she does her best to keep Con at arm's length, he refuses to take no for an answer. He's bound and determined to get through the walls she tries to erect around herself and vows to help see her through the issues she's dealing with.
I liked the characters in this story. Nic fought so hard to overcome the obstacles in her life. Her bitterness could have easily destroyed her but she kept fighting it and her PTSD. Con was persistent and wouldn't give up although Nic's behavior was hurtful at times. He wanted her to trust him, to give him a chance but he has to keep her alive long enough to convince her they could have a life together. I also really liked Cassy and her interest in a certain FBI agent has paved the way for another book.
I found this story to be very entertaining. The author did a good job of portraying Nic's difficulties with her condition and I gained some valuable insight into the effects of PTSD on our soldiers. Look forward to her next book.
There has not been a book by Winter that I have not really enjoyed. I was excited to get started when I came across this romantic suspense story from her. Atonement is the first exciting book in The McIntire County Series and follows former marine and McIntire County deputy Nicolette Rivers. Nicolette has had a messy life and suffers from PTSD. When a hostage situation goes wrong Nic’s triggers rear their ugly heads. She is a complex woman, she is strong, but she also has much depth to her. Winter certainly puts this woman through her paces. Winter has done a great job of showing the war within oneself and PTSD. It is a raw, heart-wrenching and compelling story. Suffering from PTSD myself it made the story that much more real and poignant. Con is the perfect match for Nic and but to be able to move forward they need to deal with her scarred past. Winter has cleverly woven several threads together to make this a compelling read and it is one of those books that you just can’t put down because you need to know where it is going and what comes next. There is suspense, heartache and heartbreak, pain and sorrow, dark secrets, and danger but there is also some laughter. Atonement almost becomes a dirty word. The Priest most certainly does. With deadly secrets, family, war, tragedy, death and one man’s crazy and another’s love all collide in this tale that you should all get your hands on. I really liked the characters and found myself caught up in them, the small town and the story. I hope that some of the secondary characters get their own stories. This is a must read.
Once in a while you come across a book that simply grabs your attention not letting you go. This is one of those books. Once I started reading I found myself caught up in the lives of the characters, the story, and the town.
Ms. Austin shows us how hard it is to escape the past especially when you have come home from service trying to find your place back in society. No matter how hard you try there is always something that triggers memories and puts you right back into the war. Kuddos as she delicately attacked this making is easy to comprehend and feel what our soldiers go through and deal with. It isn’t easy for soldiers coming home and dealing with day to day life. It is a constant struggle of which Ms. Austin was able to convey to the reader so that we get a small glimpse of they feel.
I really liked the mystery/suspense story with a gentle hint of romance. I didn’t know who the bad guy was until the very end. Ms. Austin kept me guessing the end which kept me turning those pages just to see if I was correct. But, that wasn’t all the way the story was woven with its vivid characters that came to life, the showing of the scenes that seemed real , the conversations between the characters and all the added touches just added to the compelling story keeping this reader interested and entertained the whole way.
Deputy Nicolette Rivers has a lot to overcome. As a Marine sniper and a woman that would be hard enough but she also had dark secrets which surfaced with the string of murders in her town. It is a lot for someone to deal with. I loved the strength that this character had in dealing with all the issues thrown her way. But most of all I loved how she had her tough side but she was also shown with a soft side. By no means did this make her weak; it just showed that she was human. She struggled with complex issues from having a General dad who was tough, a woman in a man’s world ( marine sniper) to the things she saw take place like a whole squad slaughtered and the suicide of a lover and friend. Ms. Austin wrote Nic with such strength and compassion that I could relate to her struggles. I felt her strength, her fury, her love, her tears, and her utter despair at not feeling like there was anything you could do. Every emotion came pouring out and I felt them all. So very strong…
Det. Con O’Hanlon fell for Nic from the moment she came to town. The interaction between the two was fun to watch. It was realistic. I was able to relate as I gave my husband the same type of attitude before finally giving in and going out with him. It was nice that the romance wasn’t the focal point of the story but was woven into the story in a realistic way. Not everyone falls in love at first sight.
The addition of Sheriff Hamilton, Nic’s sister Cassy and Special Agent Boyce Hunt just helped in adding to the story along with everyone else. I found Sheriff Hamilton to be that gentle bear of a man with a giant heart but hard assed when needed. The bickering between Cassy / Nic and Cassy/Boyce along with Nic/Con…Nic/Hamilton…Nic and everyone else only added to the story.
I was sad to see this story end. I have found another favorite author of which I look forward to reading more from her. I don’t want to spoil this story for you so I think you should grab that drink of choice, your comfy reading spot and perhaps a tissue or two and settle in because you won’t want to put this one down till you are finished.
First off i just want to say thank you to Austin for broaching a subject that many either shy away from or that is taboo to other PTSD is a very real thing ! I salute you for “ going there” secondly thank to all those who go to war to keep me and mine safe 🙏 I honour you and your families and your sacrifice ❣️ Another thing that got me is Cando and others like him , what happens to service dogs ?
Nicolette Rivers aka Nic , first female sniper , now retired from the marines is working as a deputy in Mctinre county and we meet her having to the unimaginable but the necessary, she has to a man to save his wife and children , she manages one but not the other and most of the townsfolk are questioning her and giving her a hard time but she followed orders …. People are dying by their own hand and something is amiss , my worries was that she’d be next ! She’s vulnerable with the ghosts that chase her and theses people that are dying by their own hand aren’t doing it by choice they’re being assisted! Twisted I know ! Someone had a god complex and is dumbed “The priest “
Due to Nic being involved in a fatal shooting and investigation / debrief has to take and Detective Con O Hanlan , our Irish Yumminess joins the story , trust me to find a little spark 🔥 but what can I say I’m a sucker for the accent 🤣🫣 anyhoo back to the task at hand ….
Nic and hee spitter ended up getting romantically involved and after a specific incident he took his life and she found him and it hones for me because I lost my mum to suicide so my heart just aches for Nic and having to carry on after is very hard and this new case is a massive trigger for her and I’m so grateful to Con for being there for her !
I’ll just say this expect the unexpected, what seems to be obvious isn’t and just as I thought I I knew who “ Tbe priest “ was I’d be left in the dust again , you’re kept on your toes 😉
There were other elements that added to this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read , Con’s family own the local pub so there’s that element which is warm and inviting , it’s home if you like , Cando, the German shepherd , adopted by Con after his retirement from the military ( thank you for your service 🐾❣️) and while he follows order he has a soft spot for Nic that’s for sure and again I’m floored at the compassion of animals , there’s romance yes and it’s enough to take the edge off the tension of this read ….there’s family drama as well , as I said a little bit of everything thing and expect the unexpected 😉
Looking forward to more of Winter’s writing it’s almost fictional non fiction if that makes sense ….
Nicolette Rivers is an ex military sniper who is now a detective in the Eider, Iowa police department. When she is called in on a case of a dangerous man who is holding his wife and kids hostage, her boss tells her right out of the gate that if he can't be talked down to take the shot and protect the family. He loses it and shoots his wife, so Nic takes the shot and is reminded of her past - and with it comes a whole bunch of suffering from PTSD.
Con O'Hanlon is a fellow Eider police detective who has been pining for Nic for a long time. When they pair up to investigate a rash of suicides that don't appear to actually be suicides the more they look, Con seems to be the only person in Nicolette's corner. He helps cover up the issues she is facing while searching for The Priest and offers so much support and strength as she spirals from her PTSD. The two of them together deal with thrills, romance, danger, suspense, chemistry...
While it's pretty clear from early on who the killer is, and there are a lot of things unexplained, I enjoyed the world building, relationships and chemistry, and how much I learned about PTSD and how misunderstood it really is. Looking forward to watching these worlds and relationships grow and expand.
This was a gripping first book in a new series and I was hooked throughout. Former marine sniper and current McIntire County deputy Nicolette Rivers is investigating a rash of unexplained suicides in the small town of Eider, Iowa. Nic suffers from PTSD and has her own deadly secrets, but things become dangerous for her when her investigations result in her becoming involved in a devious killer’s twisted plot. Eider police detective Con O'Hanlon is also assigned to uncover the truth behind the suicides, but Nic keeps refuses his help. However, when tragedy strikes Con is willing to help cover up the fallout, whilst ‘The Priest’ is keen on exposing Nic’s secret. This was a romantic suspense with plenty of drama and plot twists that kept me guessing as to the outcome of the story. The small town setting came alive though the descriptive narrative, making me feel immersed in the story. I felt engaged with the main characters, Nic and Con and found them both likeable and relatable. Nic’s PTSD was dealt with honestly and sensitively as part of the storyline. An entertaining and enjoyable read and I look forward to book two in the series.
This romantic thriller is the first book in the McIntire County series, and I was hooked from the start. It’s a well-written novel that you can’t help but try to solve the mystery alongside the characters and the well-placed twists throw you for a loop in the best way. The best display of the great writing is in the character of Nic and her battling with PTSD. Now a Sheriff’s deputy she begins investigating a string of apparent suicides, but her PTSD is affecting her worse as her past is brought ever closer to the surface. As someone familiar with the effects of PTSD it was interesting to see how this would be written and I must say that I was impressed. Obviously not everyone’s PTSD is the same, but this showed a deep understanding of how it can affect the person suffering and those close to them. I enjoyed the development of the relationship develop between Nic and Con, his understanding and patience as she resists his help and eventually seeing the relationship become more was rewarding among the negativity being faced. This was a great read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!
My favorite things about this book: a female Marine sniper, a retired military war dog, and an author not afraid to tackle the very difficult topic of PTSD.
This book had it's hooks in me from the get go. There is a series of suicides happening in the small community of Eider and they all seem to be connected. It's up the sheriff's department, along with the feds, to try to figure this out. Nic is bound and determined that she's going to be the one to crack this case. Her demons keep getting in the way and putting her in harm's way too.
Eider Police Detective Con O'Hanlon (I laughed everytime I read his name even though it's shortened...a con as a police detective) may be the only thing that can stand in the line of fire when these demons come back to haunt Nic. She's got to be willing to let him in to do that though!
Very well written story that has your turning pages as quickly as possible, yet also not wanting the story to end!
Atonement: The McIntire County Series Book 1 By : Winter Austin Review by: Susan Ratchford 4 Stars
Wonderful book. I can't wait to continue this series because I could feel every word Ms. Austin wrote. You could tell how much she cared about this story, about the message she was sending. It bled through every word. This isn’t my normal genre but something about Austin’s passion drew me to this book and I never looked back! Very thoughtful and thought provoking! Packed with plenty of suspense, mystery, and thrills, Atonement speaks for itself in volumes! My next trip into McIntire County can’t come soon enough! Highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a story that will make you think about life differently and have so much more respect for what people go through and what they might be hiding.
5 Star’s Atonement (The McIntire County Series Book 1) by Winter Austin
Atonement is the first book in The McIntire County Series and is a Romance Suspense that will have you turning the pages till the end. I’ve read several books by this author and her style of writing and attention to detail along with developed characters make for a wonderful story. Atonement is about redemption .Nicolette is a former Marine and a Deputy for McIntire County she suffers from PTSD. A bunch of suicides start happening and Nicolette along with help from Detective Con they try to uncover the truth behind the suicides. But past secrets rear their ugly heads. Can Con help Nicolette or is it to late? There are plenty of twists that will keep you glued to the pages. I highly recommend reading this mystery suspense to find out what happens next. Im already ready to dive into the next book.
Atonement by Winter Austin is the first book in The McIntire County Series. In this story, we follow Nic Rivers, a former Marine and current deputy, as she is brought in to stop a killer who may be causing people to commit suicide. Nic comes with a lot of baggage from her father and PTSD from her days as a Marine. Con O’Hanlon is a detective brought in to assist Nic with her case. I really enjoyed the suspense of this story. I also enjoyed the characterization of Nic. Her PTSD and issues with her family ring very true. I also enjoyed the attraction between Con and Nic and the effort he put into trying to build a relationship with her. This was a very intriguing and engaging story.
The premise of Atonement drew me in and there hasn’t been a book that Winter Austin has written that I haven’t enjoyed, so as soon as I had an opportunity I downloaded the whole McIntire County Series. Nic suffers from a serious case of PTSD and unless someone suffers from this it’s really hard to accurately describe how it feels and how it affects someone but I think Winter did a good job. I really liked Con, and of course Cadno, but I could just have a thing for the hunky Irishmen with the veteran K9, in stories such as these. The book is a super clean, like squeaky, romantic suspense that once it starts will keep you on the edge of your seat. Jumping into book 2 immediately.
New to me author and I seriously can’t wait for more. This book was exactly what I needed a my bit of a reading slump I was having. The storyline was easy to follow and wasn’t easy to give the answers away. I like a book that I can’t figure out immediately. The characters each brought their own style to the storyline and I was completely hooked from start to finish. I’m excited to see where this series goes next. Four big stars and highly recommended.
The first book in the McIntire series, Atonement by Winter Austin, was amazing! Right from the first few pages, I was hooked. Her characters are relatable and strong, the story line was powerful. Trouble on more than one front, but not enough to be unrealistic. I was caught up the entire time and finished the book in one day, not able to put it down. Looking forward to picking up the next!
I enjoyed the setup for this series. Being a Vietnam Vet, I appreciated the author's attempts at portraying PTSD close to realistic as he could. The action sequences, and plot twists were all part of the fun.
In all fairness I feel the need to reveal this, at least on Goodreads. Winter Austin is one of my very dearest friends, and we've been on our writing journey together for six years now. Along the way, we've helped each other through some very dark times in both our writing and personal lives. I've watched her grow as a writer and become more confident in the subjects she's willing to tackle.
I got to read this book as it was being written, and I was part of the brainstorming process. I saw it grow from its initial concept, into the masterpiece Crimson published. I love Remy and Cody from Degrees of Darkness (if you haven't read that series, go get it! It's in a bundle for really cheap). I had my doubts about whether Winter could get me to fall in love with something so completely different.
My doubts were totally unfounded. As this novel grew and took on depth and a realness you don't often find in fiction, I started threatening to beat her over the head if she didn't write faster.
This novel is a raw, real look at PTSD and its affects on our soldiers. And not just our soldiers, but on their families and friends. Nic Rivers is the first female Marine sniper, and she had to make a horrible choice that scarred her soul. To make it all worse, her father was involved in the aftermath. Because of that, she cut herself off from everyone she'd ever known and moved to the middle of nowhere Iowa. Where one of the local cops, Con O'Hanlon, falls in love with her. He's the perfect match for Nic and is a key part of her dealing with her past and being able to move forward.
The emotions are intense and in-your-face. Never once does Austin shy away from showing us what PTSD looks like. She handles it from the raw perspective of Nic refusing to deal with it, and the heart-wrenching perspective of family and friends dealing with the fallout of her breakdowns and panic. It's all done with just the right balance, to pull the reader into the moment and make us feel what Nic feels, while holding out hope that Nic will kick her PTSD in the teeth and be able to have something approaching a normal life.
The setting is another key element in why the book works so well. It's set in the life Austin knows best--rural small town Iowa. Little details are on every page, breathing life into a setting not many authors would think to set a thriller in. Yes, it is possible to set a thriller with a serial killer in Podunk, Iowa.
While Degrees of Darkness is awesome, this novel is Winter Austin's triumph as an author.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibraian – I Dig Good Books
The moment I decided to dive into this series, I wasn’t quite sure if or how much I was really going to enjoy the series. So, I went into reading book one very skeptical and maybe a little more critical than others. I was being picky and was looking for something to not like. Number one, this is how you should not start reading a book and number two, it is extremely unfair to the author and unfair to you as the reader. Why am I sharing this embarrassing tidbit of information with you? Simply because I want you to know that this author has exceeded, by leaps and bounds times one thousand, over what I was expecting or hoping for. I’m embarrassed to admit that for some reason I was being so critical but I’m really glad I was. I wasn’t willing to accept mediocre and the bar was set high and this story was just perfection.
This is a suspenseful series and the details are impeccable. They hold your attention and they keep you on high alert. The descriptions will leave you cringing. I found myself sitting up when I was originally laying down, or scooting towards the edge of the couch if I was sitting on it. I tore my nails up. I had ideas about the who and why or how but didn’t know how the author was going to connect the dots. The roadmap to get from A to B was anything but straight but it made sense. When the lightbulb clicked on and things started falling into place it allowed an audible sigh to be uttered, it felt complete.
So, needless to say, I really enjoyed this story. I was intrigued and interested. This author has something going and I felt like it was absolutely necessary to keep reading her other books in this series to delve into more of her incredible writing and crazy normal world. Please, keep up with my reviews for this series. There are too many good things to say in one single review and I’d like to have these reviews kind of be continuous as I finish each story, otherwise, you’ll be reading a very long review, and will stop reading before I’m done writing. Now, onto book two…Come along, shall you?
*A Copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Atonement is book one in the McIntire County series by Winter Austin. Several unexplained suicides in the tiny town of Eider. McIntire County Deputy Nicolette Rivers has PTSD and kept it a secret from everyone. Eider police detective Con O'Hanlon was assigned to McIntire County Deputy Nicolette Rivers to investigate the spat of unexplained suicides. However, as the case continued, McIntire County Deputy Nicolette Rivers PTSD became worse. The readers of Atonement will continue to follow McIntire County Deputy Nicolette Rivers and Eider police detective Con O'Hanlon to find out what happens.
Atonement is the first book I have read of Winter Austin. I enjoyed reading Atonement, and I will differently read another book by Winter Austin. I engaged with Atonement from the first page and continued to the end of this book. I love Winter Austin's portrayal of her characters and how they interacted with each other throughout this book. Atonement is well written and research by Winter Austin. I like how Winter Austin described Atonement's settings that allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Atonement will learn about living in a small rural community. Also, the readers will understand the problems that PTSD can have on suffers.
Atonement is Book One in The McIntire County Series. It is a romantic suspense novel full of action, mystery, intrigue, danger, and drama. The story centers around the character of Nicolette Rivers who is a deputy in a small town called Eider, Iowa. Nicolette, or Nic as she is called, is a former marine sniper who suffers from severe PTSD. Nic is estranged from her family and has a complex relationship with her father. She feels strongly that he never loved her, and she blames him for the death of her former lover. Due to the trauma of war and the estrangement from her family, Nic finds it hard to trust anyone, so she shuts everyone out and moves to a small town where nobody knows her.
When a series of apparent suicides begin to take place in her sleepy little town Nic sets out to solve them. The string starts with a man talking about atonement and repenting for his sins while holding his wife and kids’ hostage. When he cannot be talked down Nic is forced to shoot him. This causes flashbacks of her past and her PTSD rears its ugly head. After this incident, Nic is paired with Con, a police detective. Con has been interested in Nic for a while but because of her trust issues she pushes him away. Con, however, refuses to give up on Nic and is determined to break down the walls she has placed around herself. When other suicide cases pop up where the word atonement is mentioned Nic and Dusty begin to feel the cases are linked together. Were the victims somehow connected through a Priest that one of the victims mentioned prior to his death?
This book was brilliantly written and had me hooked from the first pages. The author did an amazing job of creating a riveting storyline with complex characters that you feel an instant connection to. She handled the complex subject of PTSD, and the effects it has on those suffering from it as well as how it affects the relationships they have with others. Nic was a smart, strong, kick-arse woman who was determined to fight her demons and come out stronger for having done so. Con was sweet, kind, and stubborn as he refused to give up on Nic. This book had heartache, heartbreak, loss, trauma, dark secrets, mystery, danger, intrigue, complex family dynamics, death, war, and a crazed serial killer. I highly recommend this book!
This is the first book in the McIntire County Series and wow what a start. I was gripped right from the beginning. This is a gripping Suspense read full of twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I wasn't able to work out the ending which to me makes a good story when you can't tell what is coming next. The author does an amazing job with out lead character Nic. Nic was a military sniper. After leaving she is now a sheriffs deputy however things aren't straight forward. Nic suffers really badly with PTSD as a result of her time as a military sniper and even though she has left she still suffers. It was a really eye opening look at how PTSD effects not only the person suffering but everyone around them. In this story there are several suicides which Nic needs to investigate. Were these a sad case of suicide or is something more sinister happening. Could Nic be walking into the trap of a killer? With Con O'Halon assigned to help her they need to work together to solve this even though Nic pushes back against his assistance at every turn. As Nic finds it increasingly hard to control her demons from the past will Con be strong enough to pull her back from the brink of despair? This is a story full of heartbreak and secrets and as the secrets become revealed the fight that Nic has to fight becomes harder. It is a story of a constant battle that Nic has to go through against PTSD and how hard it is for her to keep her life on track. When a killer is out there as well trying everything in his power to bring her down Nic has a lot of things to deal with. Can she allow Con in and trust him to help her or will she continue to spiral out of control.
Nic Rivers came out of the army and has settled in the sleepy town of Eider but when she is asked to take point as a sniper against a man threatening his wife and kids her demons come out and she has trouble pushing them away. When one night she calls the inly person who can help her Con O'Hanlon who can chase the nightmares away.
When she is asked to join the task force they uncover that there is a killer on the loose that is setting up murders to look like suicides, but can they discover who the Priest is and stop them before more murders occurs?
I have read other books by this author before and this series does not disappoint. Winter has the gift of drawing you into the story and creating characters who are flawed but are strong and overcome the issues to get the job down, especially her females characters are full of sassy but also are happy to show the vulnerability.
This story has the twists and turns of a good thriller, with excellent writing and character development. The chemistry between the main characters flew off the page and with the addition of the secondary characters adding to the drama I can't wait to read the next instalment in this series and get to see Nic and Con's relationship development more.
Atonement is a romantic thriller with plenty of drama and turns. Centering around Nicolette Rivers, a female sniper that leaves the Marines because of PTSD, this book brings many things to the surface about real emotions and feelings. Nic is called to the scene of a man that is holding his family hostage. The man ends up shooting his wife in front of the kids, and Nic is forced to take him down which triggers her PTSD again. With all of the things going on in her head, she is then paired with Con, the only person who seems to be in her corner. They began investigating a string of suicides that are more than they appear to be and romance begans to blossom. I love that the characters are not perfect without flaws and issues of their own. I do wish there was more of a clear explanation on how or why the PTSD started, or what happened to cause the departure. I also was disappointed that the killer was very easy for me to figure out early on, but the character development and story saved the day on that. This is the first book in The McIntire series, so I am looking forward to seeing where the story leads next, and this is definitely worth the read.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, PTSD, suspense, and heartbreak.
This is Nicolette and Con’s story. Nic hides her pain and PTSD suffering behind a mask while doing her job. But during the latest crimes she has trouble keeping it secret. She has isolated herself from her family in a way to cope and to keep her father out of her life since his betrayal. Con is a detective she knows from work. When she needs help after fall out from a shooting she calls him. Fearing for her safety he comes to help they fall into a kind of friendship. But when he calls in one of her family she get upset. She knows she needs to solve the case but when the case almost causes her to lose her family will she and Con be able to save everyone? What happens when truths of the past come out will the family ever be the same? Can they piece together the family and still solve a case of will the killer take Nic out before she can?
I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Atonement is the first book in the McIntire County series by Winter Austin. It is an engrossing romantic suspense that has all the suspenseful, gritty, gripping, and intense developments that I love and have come to expect from Ms. Austin. She has a way of weaving intriguing mystery, tension, and complex subjects into an entirely unputdownable read, while blending in plenty of emotion to balance it all out. This is a crime and investigation story set in a small rural town in Iowa, where things take a twisted turn when a series of baffling suicides sets the stage for a dangerous game of cat and mouse. A cunning serial killer with an agenda. A determined deputy with PTSD and secrets of her own. A stubborn detective intent on helping to uncover the killer. Add in plenty of angst, dramatic developments, and twists and turns- and the story really takes off. What a way to start a series! Can’t wait to see where we go from here. Bring on Book #2! Happy Reading…
Atonement (The McIntire County Series Book 1) by Winter Austin. This author has quickly become one of my favorites so I was excited to start this new series. I was not disappointed. It was a great book, I can't wait for the next one. It's the story of Deputy Nic Rivers who has a lot of baggage to overcome. She is a former Marine Sniper with a bad case of PTSD and now she is having to deal with murders in her small town. Her dad is a retired General and that comes with its whole set of issues for her. Seeing her friends in the Marines murdered and completing suicide is enough for her to need therapy but add all the other stuff and she has lots of issues. When she is partnered with Detective Con O'Hanlon sparks fly on his side. He is smitten and determined to wear Nic down. Working together they become very close and realize that they are very compatible. Will they be able to solve the case before more murders take place and will they be able to keep everyone safe in this sleepy little town? Read this awesome Romantic Suspense to find out!
This is not my first Winter Austin book and it definitely won’t be my last. When I open a Winter Austin book, I know that I am going to get fantastic suspense that will keep me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I also know that I am going to read amazing characters and that the detectives and police in it are going to add an extra layer of entertainment. Atonement does not disappoint at all with this. Austen once again has crafted fantastic characters and a plotline that does not disappoint. This story also features PTSD and Winter Austin does a fantastic job of providing background information about PTSD. Nic is such a well written multifaceted character. I found that the amount of depth written to her was amazing and made her extra interesting. I absolutely loved this book and I definitely recommend it!
Everyone experiences PTSD differently and, in this book, the main character, Deputy Nicolette Rivers, is a former marine sniper going through it. She had secrets to hide, but who doesn't? There are a slew of suicides happening in the little town of Eider and she is one part of the duo that is tasked with solving the cases. Are they connected? Are they really suicides or are they homicides? She would rather work alone, but her partner detective Con O' Hanlon is not about to leave her to deal with everything on her own. Will they be able to get along long enough to uncover the truth behind all the carnage? This story deals with PTSD. I'm sure that the author had a hard time trying to get all the ins and outs of how PTSD would affect someone, but I feel she did a great job. It was an enjoyable and quick read; I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.
I started this book and, quite literally, could not put it down. Nic had grabbed my attention right from the start. By jumping right in with the hostage scene, I was in for the full ride. Nice is a former Marine sniper that is now a Sheriff’s Deputy. She’s trying to keep her PTSD hidden and not doing a great job. Many secrets are hidden in this story and they are coming out. I love the writing. I was nowhere close to figuring out who the culprit was. A definite sign of a good mystery to me. The author throws in twists and turns where you don’t expect them. A little romance between her and Con was lovely. I can’t wait to see where that goes. This is an amazing start to a new series that just blew me away. I can’t wait for the next book.
This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites. I enjoy this author’s writing skills that make their stories come to life on every page. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. A story about redemption, the truth behind the suicides that are happening in this small town and a deputy that has their own past and demons lurking. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning. The characters are relatable, strong characters that made the story easy for me to read. They have great growth as well as add a lot to the story. I found this book to be fast paced, engaging and entertaining to read. You don’t want to miss out on this mystery story. I highly recommend this book.
