Precious Gem: A true story of courage and resilience.

The dream was to become a mother. The plan was to raise her children in a unique lodge environment, a family-ownedbusiness, tucked away in the heart of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The dream was just a step away. The plan was perfect.

Life, however, had a different agenda.

This is a story of a mother navigating her way through her daughter's rare illness and subsequent family struggle, supported lovingly by her husband. Along her journey she realises that throughout the darkness there have, and always will be, as her daughter's name suggests, precious gems in the form of family, friends, and angels guiding her family along the way.

She learns from those around her, in both positive and negative situations, valuable life lessons that mould her to understanding her true self and gaining the strength to build confidence.

Above all, she learns through her daughter's courage and bravery that, no matter what life throws at you, there is always a reason to find joy.

In the novel "Precious Gem," readers embark on an emotional voyage alongside Gem, a fourteen-year-old girl navigating the intricacies of growing up in a multiracial family. Against the canvas of a transformative summer, Gem grapples with questions of identity, belonging, and acceptance. The story unfolds as Gem discovers hidden family secrets, confronts racial biases, and forms unlikely friendships.

However, some readers have noted that the book lacks a compelling central plot. The narrative meanders, leaving readers searching for a clear direction. Despite this, the novel's strength lies in its exploration of racial identity and the complexities of family dynamics. Gem's journey resonates with young readers, offering glimpses into their own struggles and triumphs.

As Gem faces challenges, including prejudice and self-doubt, she learns valuable life lessons. The novel emphasizes resilience, empathy, and the power of genuine connections. While the storytelling occasionally falters, the book compensates with heartfelt moments and thought-provoking themes.

For those seeking both entertainment and introspection, "Precious Gem" remains an excellent choice. Its portrayal of personal growth and the importance of understanding our roots will resonate with readers of all ages.

Blown away by this book. It's a mother's account of parenting a child so fragile, almost every hour of every day had a question hovering over it. Yet the child, Gemma (the "Gem" of the title) managed to shine so brightly, she enchanted young and old wherever she was, from tourists visiting the family's amazing adventure lodge in the mountains of Lesotho, to her fellow patients in countless hospitals. Debbie Deutschmann manages to make this heart-wrenching story totally absorbing and surprisingly uplifting.
