Thanks to cable television, the internet, and the rise of independent films there has never been a better time to be an actor. In Acting for a Living , Roy McCrerey shows why acting is now a viable choice as a profession - regardless of where you happen to live. If you speak and read well, have a good imagination and are in search of a career that you can truly get excited about - you need to read this book.
What an informative read. This book has given me some great information about the industry that I had yet to come across before. Unexpected honesty about markets, people, and motivations help pave a path toward a career in acting.
Roy McCrerey's book was insightful in many ways I didn't expect in a bluntness I greatly appreciated. At several points in his writing he discourages aspiring actors from any notion of seeing oneself as an artist & has good explanation for it. Instead he encouraged seeing oneself as a business person or even...a product. The socialist in me was immediately rubbed the wrong way with that, even as I see his point. Seemed a bit dehumanizing. It's sad that we live in a world where being a product, an object is the healthier choice than being an artist
I have read a lot of acting books but this has to be one of the most honest books I've come across in a long time. The author gives such great advice and he challenges you to create an open mind when it comes to your career options. It's a must read for all actors especially in regional markets.
