An excellent, detailed insight into the processes which have created and continue to create the material conditions that leave the ruling classes unable to continue in the old way and the working class unwilling to.
Some of Achcar's formulations may be problematic; the controversial support for Libyan rebels calling for NATO bombings to weaken the powers that be remains a contentious issue. But this is, in the context of this book, a nitpick: his empirical data is all-encompassing and arguably unparalleled, and his dialectical method of analysis leads us to generally agreeable conclusions.
Achcar continues to stress --- today, even --- that we have seen the beginning of a protracted revolutionary process which is still unfolding. It has not been defeated, neither has it won. While some commentators will point out that there has been a definitive shift in the situation on the ground, it is also true that the material conditions of crisis have not faded away and the masses continue to demand more.
This is mandatory reading on the uprisings in the Arab region.
