Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook by Jim Clark and Ken Beck, with recipes edited by Julia M. Pitkin contains more than 300 recipes served by Aunt Bee and others on The Andy Griffith Show "TM". Includes wonderful, rare photos from the show and interesting sidebars. Illustrated and indexed.
Aunt Bee and her friends have stirred up a cookbook that brings home all the flavor of "The Andy Griffith Show's" Mayberry. You'll enjoy most of the 300 mouth-watering recipes (but not all―included is the recipe for Kerosene Cucumbers) for the foods served by Aunt Bee and others in Mayberry.
From good old-fashioned, down-home cooking to some of Mayberry's more unusual meals, you'll discover favorite Mayberry-style dishes for all occasions―inspired by Aunt Bee's unsurpassed talents in the kitchen and her special love for her family and friends.
Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook is also chock-full of wonderful, rare photographs from "The Andy Griffith Show" and offers entertaining glimpses into "the friendly town." Many of the recipes are favorites from members of the show's cast and crew.
If you are looking for recipes that Aunt Bee Taylor was seen preparing and serving on The Andy Griffith Show for nostalgia’s sake, you are out of luck. If you are looking for recipes that belong to actress Frances Bavier, who played Aunt Bee, for curiosity’s sake, you are also out of luck. If you don’t mind recipes that would have appeared in a church cookbook or a women’s magazine in the 1960s, this is the cookbook for you.
These are recipes they somehow garnered from home cooks, as Tastes Like Home does. Be prepared for lots of “salad dressing” (a.k.a Miracle Whip), Velveeta, cream of mushroom soup, corn syrup, gelatin and canned vegetables. The cookbook does contain some interesting recipes, although you’re unlikely to make them: barbecued raccoon (I kid you not!), venison, two versions of owl pie (is killing owls even legal anymore?), alligator and persimmon pudding. I did enjoy a trip down memory lane with recipes for Russian tea, Chicken à la King, Chicken Chow Mein, Grasshopper Pie, real mincemeat, Baked Alaska, Nesselrode Pie (whatever that was) and more. Definitely worth reading, even if the recipes are pretty dated.
I have been sorting thru my cookbooks and stumbled across this gem in my pantry. The recipes are not especially difficult or fancy but more along the line of downhome comfort food. I especially loved the addition of dialogue, pictures, trivia, and character description from "The Andy Griffith Show". Finally, I enjoyed the description of the Snappy Lunch diner featured on the show. I am happy that the restaurant is still in business and am planning a road trip in the near future to Mount Airy, NC, for one of their world famous pork chop sandwiches.

I received this cookbook as a gift from my dear friend Lisa in 1992. I just ordered a replacement this week because I had spilled coffee all over it a couple of years ago. Several of my favorite recipes reside in this cookbook, and I will continue to use this year after year! If you can get your hands on a copy, you'll love it!
I love this cookbook! There are several recipes I go back to time and again because they are so tasty. Included among the recipes are photos and quotes and information from and about the Andy Griffith Show. I'm pretty sure if the food was mentioned on the show, the recipe made it here. Including the famous peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
One of the great things about the layout of this book is the spiral binding. It stays open! Those you who still use books when cooking understand how important it is for the book to stay open to the page you need. (Remember the Friends episode where Rachel's trifle ends up with a meat layer?)
My copy is well used with a few splatters here and there. If you're not sure you want to check it out, well, that's too bad. A fun cookbook from a great family show with a cast of unique characters. If anything, you should check out the "Nip it in the Bud Spuds" recipe.
this is a cookbook but a rather unique one. I read it because i am a fan of the Andy Griffith Show. all the recipes are ones that could have come from Aunt Bees cooking. all the recipes are from cooks from the southern states. some of the recipes are from actual cast members from the Andy Griffith show. for some fun added to this cookbook, there are pictures of the cast. some of the pictures features a bit of a biography of the character. also included are some short scripts from the show usually taking about food. as in most cookbooks, it is in categories, such as breakfast meals, beverages, main dishes separated by different meats. deserts, sauces etc. most of the recipes are ones you would have eaten during the time era the Andy Griffith show was on. If you are looking for good home cooking, there are some interesting dishes here.
I'm a long time fan of The Andy Griffith Show so I new I would enjoy this one. Interesting, quirky recipes such as Aunt Bees Kerosene Cucumbers. One of my favorite episodes! Loaded with pictures and commentary from the many black and white episodes over the years. A true treasure for fans of the much beloved show. It also has Charlene's Fish Muddle recipe!
This book is full of little snippets from the show and recipes that the show inspired.
If you re looking for recipes that have a complete list of calories, carbs, protein, sodium, and the like; you re going to be sorely disappointed. You might also have a coronary reading the ingredient list for some of these recipes. The show was on television before many of you were born and the recipes taste like they are actually from Mayberry RFD.
Almost like: “You finally arrived, come on up, sit down and have a rest. Take a load off your feet, rest awhile neighbor!”
This book was much better than I had anticipated. Having never watched a single episode of Mayberry my neglected childhood was not familiar with the ethos of the show or its cuisine. But..there are some great recipes here, along with cast profiles and even episode excerpts. I mean, where else can you get a recipe for alligator stew? Now i know.
4.5 rounding up with smiling cheeks! This book is hysterical, so tongue and cheek I couldn't stop laughing out loud. I haven't seen this show in decades, but the memories are fresh with all their photos and quotes. It was such a kinder time back then, great fun to step back into aunt bees kitchen.
I have used several recipes so far. They are great. I love the reading from the shows and pictures. Great to see the people again and remember. Will be making a lot more recipes from here.
I haven't finished yet, but interesting content: The first section is Mayberry characters dialogs, then it goes into menu plans and more dialog. Finally recipes and more stories.
The recipes are nice, fairly simple. look very good tasting and easy to prepare.
I really liked the recipes in this book. Lots of good old food like Granny made. All sorts of anecdotes about the TV show and comments from the characters about Aunt Bee's cooking. The recipes are a compliation of cast members' contributions and recipes from all over the US. It was a fun book to read and I think I might make some of Aunt Bee's recipes. This neat cookbook was one of two cookbooks that my sister received as a wedding present.
Watched the Andy Griffith as a child and now as reruns. Characters become like people we know. Lots of the recipes that Aunt Bee Cooked and also Barney's Famous Boarding House Chili. Who could ever forget Aunt Bee's Pickles or her Apple Pie?? Book is also filled with pics and writing of various shows. Has found a place with my fav cookbooks. I'm sure I'll use lots. Didn't put a date I finished, since will be using over and over. Recommend to others.
This had plenty of recipes... but, even better.. lots of background stories of the series. I like that it was more than just Aunt Bee's recipes but included recipes that were made in nearly every main character's home in Mayberry! A book that takes you back in time and reminds you of the things in life that truly matter.. Family and friends. Nothing says love.. more than a gathering around the dining room table or sitting on the couch.. sharing a meal.. and sharing unconditional love!
What a fun book this is. Lots of information and photos from the television show - a place I'd love to live if it was a real place. I enjoy watching reruns and this book makes me laugh almost as much as the show did. Have tried a few recipes and they were good, even if the cooking time might not be exact! Can't wait to try Thelma Lou's fudge - with cashews or without, both recipes are included.
I just love this book! It was a gift from my mother, because she knew how much I loved the Andy Griffith Show growing up. The book is full of photos and great trivia from the show, plus tons of fantastic recipes that you'll want to make again and again.
