All Rose asks of Michael is complete fidelity, and when she has cause to doubt him she devises a terrible revenge. Michael has planned an anniversary trip to Venice for the two of them, but as they ride in gondolas and wander the sights of this most romantic of cities, Rose, racked with secret jealousy, is making plans. By the time they return, Michael will have become seriously ill—although not so ill that he cannot recognize the fact that something truly dreadful has happened to him.
Gillian White (b. 1945) grew up in Liverpool, England. She has written sixteen novels under her own name, which are known for suspense, Gothic thrills, and satiric views of contemporary society. She also writes historical romance under the name Georgina Fleming. She lives in Devon, England.
I was introduced to Gillian White's storytelling through a recent watching of the cerebral suspense movie, The Sleeper and had to track down her other works. I came across Night Visitor thinking it would be similarly suspenseful and it was all that and more. This is truly my ideal "domestic thriller" but a lot darker and more satisfying than current novels of the genre.
This is a stand out thriller as the reader truly does not expect the twists and exceedingly dark turns in the plot. It focuses on a traditional nuclear family of four with two adult daughters and their empty nester parents each moving through their new phases of life with degrees of difficulty. It covers heterosexual and lesbian relationships, mid life crises, stalkers and mental illness. Taken together and mixed up to produce a very compelling thriller that is entirely plausible and and terrifying.
This author is new to me and I won't be reading anymore, her style is easy enough to read but it's all over the place. She writes, at times, as though someone is speaking to the reader but I'm not sure who's speaking. I wonder too when White decided who the perpetrator was because it feels like it was near the end. Overall, not very impressed.
I struggled to score this! I was disturbed by this book at times. So much so I nearly stopped reading it, it was so uncomfortable. I am glad I persevered though. Maybe it should be a 4, or more. If you read it you will understand. Really liked the end.
