The Words forms the first part of the Risale-i Nur collection, an approximately 6,000-page Qur?anic commentary. In this commentary Bediuzzaman Said Nursi?s main concern is how to save and strengthen one?s religious belief when confronted with the current prevalent materialist philosophy. It does not explain when or why a verse was revealed, but rather the truth that it represents. Subjects discussed are God, resurrection, prophethood, destiny, ego, worship, and how the truth of these matters is revealed through nature. The author also analyzes naturalist and materialist philosophy, as well as scientific theories and findings, and refutes them based on evidence that is clearly apparent in nature itself.
Said Nursî, (1878 – March 23, 1960) is an Islamic scholar who wrote Risale-i Nur Collection, a body of Qur'anic commentary exceeding six thousand pages. He is commonly known as Bediüzzaman, which means "the wonder of the age".
He was finally released in 1949. In the last decade of his life he settled in Isparta city. After the introduction of the multi-party system he advised his followers to vote for the Democratic Party of Adnan Menderes which gained the support of the rural and conservative populations. Because Said Nursî considered communism the greatest danger of that time, he also supported the pro-Western orientation of the Democrats, leading to his support of NATO, CENTO and Turkey's participation in the Korean war. He tried to unite Muslims and Christians in the struggle against communism and materialism therefore he corresponded with the Pope and the Greek Orthodox patriarch.
In 1956 he was allowed to have his writings printed. His books are collected under the name The Collection Of Risale-i Nur (Letters of Light). His tomb in Urfa (demolished in July 1960)
He died of exhaustion after traveling to Urfa. He was buried on the premises where according to Islamic beliefs Abraham (Ibrahim) is buried. After the military coup d'état in Turkey in 1960, a group of soldiers led by the later extreme right-wing politician Alparslan Türkeş opened his grave and buried him at an unknown place near Isparta during July 1960 in order to prevent popular veneration. His followers are reported to have found his grave after years of searching in the area, and took his remains to a secret place in an effort to protect his body from further disturbance. Now, only two followers of him know where he is buried. When one of them dies, the other one tells one more person the secret place of the grave reducing the chance that the place be forgotten. Interestingly enough, he wrote in a treaty (risala), that no one should know where his tomb is.
I was given this book as a gift about three years ago by a very close Turkish friend inside the musalla of my university. My suggestion is to take your time reading the material, as it typically makes reference to moral and religious philosophy that the reader may not be acquainted with. Said Nursi was a prominent figure among the Sufi Tariqas -- a group that was violently suppressed during Mustafa Kemal's (Atta Turk) reign of Turkey. "The Words" was inspired after he and his students were regularly confronted and harassed by Turkish authorities for printing material merely on the existence of God, which at the time, was against state legislation. His subsequent encounter with a furious Atta Turk, after having given a critical speech to Turkey's governing legislature, cemented his fate as an outcast of Turkish society. The Words -- only the first book in the Risal-e-Nur series -- gives great historical insight into how Said Nursi sought to reconcile the ideas of modernity with faith. A great read for history buffs and religious studies students.
Alhamdulillah (الحمد لله) It took me more than 4 years to get around this magnum opus work by late Islamic scholar Bediuzzaman Said Nursi . But I have no regrets because I really enjoyed reading it and hope to take some gems out of it. In my humble opinion this work ought to have been read by all across world especially in this climate of unbelief. Nursi briefly introduces to us who " the GOD" is in a simple layman terms (no complicated jargon). I see that most of the explanation and arguments put forward is very compelling for a belief in GOD and the best part is , all these has been suggested in a logical manner for our intellect to digest without any doubts. And finally some of the difficult questions that can pop up into our mind in the matters of unseen has also been addressed lucidly in a question answer format. Highly recommend to religious as well as non religious folks who is seeking the truth. May Allah (the God) have mercy upon Said Nursi .
