Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also spelt Saratchandra) (Bengali: শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়) was a legendary Bengali novelist from India. He was one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the early 20th century.
His childhood and youth were spent in dire poverty as his father, Motilal Chattopadhyay, was an idler and dreamer and gave little security to his five children. Saratchandra received very little formal education but inherited something valuable from his father—his imagination and love of literature.
He started writing in his early teens and two stories written then have survived—‘Korel’ and ‘Kashinath’. Saratchandra came to maturity at a time when the national movement was gaining momentum together with an awakening of social consciousness.
Much of his writing bears the mark of the resultant turbulence of society. A prolific writer, he found the novel an apt medium for depicting this and, in his hands, it became a powerful weapon of social and political reform.
Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of thousands of readers not only in Bengal but all over India.
Some of his best known novels are Palli Samaj (1916), Charitraheen (1917), Devdas (1917), Nishkriti (1917), Srikanta in four parts (1917, 1918, 1927 and 1933), Griha Daha (1920), Sesh Prasna (1929) and Sesher Parichay published posthumously (1939).

এ এমন এক কালজয়ী উপন্যাস যা সময়ের বলিরেখাকে উত্তীর্ণ করেছে বহু আগেই। দত্তা বহুচর্চিত এক গল্প। আসলে গল্পের বাঁধন মানুষের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হতে পারলে তবেই সার্থকতা লাভ করে। ভাবলে বিস্মৃত হতে হয় যে অত যুগ আগে শরৎচন্দ্র বাবু এরকম ভাবে সময়ের অকাল ক্ষতকে তার লেখনীর মাধ্যমে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।
আমি মনে করি বিজয়ার চরিত্র আজকের আধুনিকার অন্যতম দিক। কথায় বলে জীবনসঙ্গী নির্বাচনের ক্ষেত্রে নিজের মনের কথা শোনা উচিত, তবে কথা শুধু কথাই বাস্তবে তা মূল্যহীন। এই উপলব্ধিটাই আরও সুদূর ভাবে এই উপন্যাসেই বোঝা যায়। সমাজ, আত্মীয় সর্বোপরি নিজের কাছেই নিজের অস্পষ্টতা যেন আষ্টেপৃষ্টে বেঁধে রাখে একজন নারীকে তা সে আধুনিকাই হোক বা গ্রাম্য তরুণী। বিজয়ার প্রতি মাঝে মাঝে করুণার উদ্রেক ঘটে আসলে ছোট বয়সে ভাগ্যের আঘাতে নিয়তির যে বাঁধা পথ তৈরী হয়েছে তার জন্য তা ভেদ করে বেরিয়ে আসা কঠিন এবং দুঃসহ। তার উপর মনের মানুষ টাই যদি মনের কথা না বুঝতে তবে বুঝি সেই মেয়েটির মত অভাগা আর কেউ হয় না।
যারা নিয়মের বেড়াজালে সত্যকে বেঁধে রাখে তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম বিলাসবিহারী। ধর্ম পালনকর্তা যদি নিজে সঠিক পথে ধাবিত হয় তবে ধর্ম আপনা আপনিই চলবে। কারণ ধর্ম জোর করে চাপিয়ে দেবার জিনিস নয়, এ হল অন্তরের গভীরে থাকা একধরনের বিশ্বাস যা বাইরে থেকে উৎখাত করলেও ভিতরে তা ঠিকই থাকে।
সত্যি বলতে কী নরেনের উপর রাগই হবে, সে আত্মভোলা মানুষ তবে ভালোবাসা কিন্তু আত্মভোলা নয়, সে তার অধিকার ঠিক আদায় করেই ছাড়ে । ভালোবাসা কী কোনোকিছুর আজ্ঞাবহী দাস? যে সে সর্বদা অনুমতি নিয়ে অন্দরমহলে প্রবেশ করবে? সে তো ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার মত উদাসীন তাই বোধ করি মাতালের মত মাতিয়ে রাখে মানুষকে।
সত্যের নগ্ন রূপ যতই কুৎসিত হোক না কেন তা একদিন সামনে আসবেই। সত্য শুধু মুখের কথা নয় এ হল অন্তরের উপলব্ধি যা নতুন দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে মানুষকে দেখতে সাহায্য করে। এ প্রসঙ্গে শরৎচন্দ্র বাবুর অনুভূতি কত প্রখর তা বোঝা যায় যখন নলিনী নরেনের কথাগুলো দয়ালবাবুকে বলছেন,
” সত্যের স্থান বুকের মধ্যে, মুখের মধ্যে নয়। কেবল মুখ দিয়ে বার হয়েছে বলেই কোনো জিনিস কখনো সত্যি হয়ে ওঠে না। তবুও তাকে যারা সকলের অগ্রে, সকলের উর্ধ্বে স্থাপন করতে চায়, তারা সত্যকে ভালোবাসে বলেই করে না, তারা সত্যভাষণের দম্ভকেই ভালোবাসে বলে করে।”

I always read and reread Datta with the deepest pleasure. The idyllic Bangla grammo backdrop, the noble ideals of an aspiring age, the underlying flaws and intrigues... the lovely, rich heroine who is caught between the demands of duty and the claims upon her heart... the extraordinarily intelligent and utterly unworldly hero...
Oh, I fell in love with Naren as a youngster and I find him irresistible still. There is something of Dostoevsky's Myshkin in Naren's character... the same straightforwardness, guilelessness, and sincerity. He's almost too good, too free spirited for this world. And yet, Naren can be endearingly devious and demanding. I love the scenes where Bijaya and Naren interact. She can be such a whimsical little tyrant and yet, her love for him comes across so clearly. And, he can be so exasperating in his blindness... in his self-denial.
I like the other characters too... the wily and wicked Rashbehari, the avuncular Dayal, the friendly Nalini. Also, Bilaash. He is the surprise package of the story.
Sarat Chandra Chatterjee is a master storyteller. In his hands, a simple plot line becomes a beautiful and unforgettable love story.

বাংলা চলচিত্রের কাহিনীকাররা বোধহয় সবচেয়ে বেশি অনুপ্রেরণা পেয়েছেন শরৎচন্দ্রের উপন্যাস থেকে। তার দত্তা উপন্যাসের সাথে প্যানপ্যানানি সস্তা বাংলা ছবির খুব একটা পার্থক্য নাই।

I loved this story. This is the story where a girl named as Vijaya follows the promise of her father. The story also represents the cultural disturbance of that time. She faced many discrimination and taunting from the people, but still she didn't move from it. I loved the powerful character of Vijaya. This is a translated version and due to this I have noticed that this book has many grammatical mistakes.
This is a small book, which you can finish in a day.

শরৎচন্দ্রের এমন চমৎকার সৃষ্টি 'দত্তা'! এই মাঝরাতে পড়ে শেষ করলাম। বিজয়াকে আমার ভীষণ ভালো লাগলো, সেকালে মাত্র অষ্টাদশী এক তরুণী কেমন দৃঢ়চেতা! নরেন, ভীষণ আত্মমগ্ন যুবক, সেও এক ভালো লাগার জায়গা নিয়েছে। ১০০ পাতায় গিয়ে বারবার ভাবছিলাম,কি হবে এরপর! অতঃপর গল্পের সমাপ্তিই মন ভালো করে দিলো!
সমাজ যা, সমাজের মানুষ যা, শরৎচন্দ্র ঠিক তাই লেখে। মন ছুঁয়ে যাওয়া বই এটা!

আমার মতে বাংলা সাহিত্যের সেরা ক্লাসিক হল শরৎ বাবুর দত্তা। এই একটা উপন্যাস পড়েই আমি তার আজন্ম ভক্ত হয়ে যাই।
অনেকেই বলে শ্রীকান্ত হচ্ছে শরৎচন্দ্রের শ্রেষ্ঠ কৃর্তী। কিন্তু সত্যি বলতে কি, আমার কাছে শ্রীকান্তে��� চেয়ে দত্তা বহুগুণ বেশি ভাল লেগেছে।
অনেকেই বলে শ্রীকান্ত হচ্ছে শরৎচন্দ্রের শ্রেষ্ঠ কৃর্তী। কিন্তু সত্যি বলতে কি, আমার কাছে শ্রীকান্তে��� চেয়ে দত্তা বহুগুণ বেশি ভাল লেগেছে।

February 13, 2018আমার ব্যক্তিগত স্মৃতি জড়িত বইটি নিয়ে। আমার নানা বড় ভক্ত ছিলেন শরৎচন্দ্রের। নানার সংগ্রহে থাকা এটি যখন পড়ছিলাম তখন নানা স্পয়লার দিয়ে দিলে খুব রাগ হয়েছিলাম।
আহামরি ঘটনা নয়, তবে এই বই নিয়ে এই স্মৃতিটা মনে আছে ভীষণভাবে।

কিছু মানুষের জন্য ভালবাসা নয়। সবার জন্য যেমন হেমন্ত সুখের বার্তা বয়ে আনে না তেমনি ভালবাসা সব মানুষের জন্য সুখকর নয়। আত্মসম্মান আর নিজস্বতা বজায় রাখতে কখনো ছেড়ে দেওয়াটা উত্তম।
'দত্তা' এক নারীর অবিচল ধারা জীবনের এক শোমথ কাহিনী। অবহেলা নারী যেমন করতে পারে, নিজের সর্বস্ব দিয়ে ভালবাসতেও পারে তার আশ্চর্য নির্দশন এই বই। নরেন, রাসবিহারী, বিলাস একই চরিত্রের হয়েও যেন বালুতটে থাকা সুক্ষিতিং বালির স্তর। বিজয়া যেন সমাজের এক অন্ধকার জগতের সৌন্দর্য। যেখানে সব বিপদ অপেক্ষায় সেখানেই যেন তার জয়।

Datta is a simple love story that grips one's attention till the end. A story that can never grow old as long as human sensitivity prevails. I simply loved it. One of my all time favourites.

অনেকদিন পর এমন একটা বই পড়লাম, যেটাতে গল্পের চরিত্রগুলোকে খুব কাছ থেকে দেখছি বলে মনে হচ্ছিলো। যতই পড়ছিলাম, ততই যেন তৃপ্ত হচ্ছিলাম। দোদুল্যমান মানব চরিত্রের খামখেয়ালীপনার মধ্য দিয়ে বিজয়ার পরিণতিটা কি সুন্দর করেই না বর্ণনা করলেন শরৎচন্দ্র। ভাল লেগেছে খুবই।

মুগ্ধ হয়েছি!!! বইটা শেষ করে কেমন সুখ সুখ লাগছে।হুমায়ুন আহমেদের 'মেঘ বলেছে যাবো যাবো ' এর হাসান চরিত্র যেভাবে আমার মনে জায়গা করে নিয়েছিলো,নরেন ঠিক একইভাবে জায়গা করে নিলো।শরৎ এর লিখা আরেক কালজয়ী উপন্যাস প্রিয় হয়ে থাকবে।

কৈশোর কালে এই বই আমায় তীব্রভাবে অভিভূত করেছিলো। টানা বেশ কিছু শরত পড়েছিলাম তখন; তার মধ্যে কেবল এটিতেই পেয়েছিলাম মিস্টি এন্ডিং। এজন্যই বোধহয় এত ভালোলাগা। এখন এই বই পড়লে কখনোই এতটা চমৎকৃত হতাম না। এজন্যই লোকে বলে, সবকিছুরই একটা নিজস্ব বয়স থাকে।

দত্তা উপন্যাসে মূল চরিত্র নায়িকা, নাম বিজয়া। এখানে প্রথমেই বলে রাখি, গ্রামে তিনজন বন্ধু থাকেন একসাথে। তাদের নাম, জগদীশ, বনমালী ও রাসবিহারী। বনমালীবাবু ঔই গ্রামের সঙ্গতিপন্ন জমিদার এবং প্রচুর ধনসম্পত্তির মালিক অধিকারী, তার একমাত্র কন্যা বিজয়া। তার সাথে জগদীশবাবু তার ছেলের সঙ্গে বিবাহ দিতে চান, আবার রাসবিহারীবাবুও তার ছেলের সাথে বিবাহ দিতে চান। জগদীশবাবুর ছেলের নাম নরেন্দ্র, এবং রাসবিহারীবাবুর ছেলের নাম বিলাস। কিন্তু, বনমালীবাবু তার বন্ধু জগদীশবাবুর ছেলে নরেন্দ্রবাবুর সাথেই তার একমাত্র মেয়ের বিজয়ার বিবাহ দিতে চান।

About Author - Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was a Bengali writer of the early 20s. He was born on 15 September 1876 in Debanandapur, Bandel. His novels are mainly based on village cultures of Bengal. His many works have been adapted as movies or tv shows.
Summary - Datta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is a story of three people Bijaya, Narendra (Naren) and Bilasbihari (Bilas). Their fathers were childhood friends. Narendra's father and Bilasbihari's father both wanted Bijaya as their daughter-in-law. Bijaya and Bilas were rich kids but Naren was not like them. After the death of Bijaya's father Bilasbihari's father Rasbihari arranged Bijaya's marriage with his son for her estate.
As the story goes you will see how beautifully Sarat Chandra has painted every character. How he has created such a love triangle!!! Narendra and Bilas both loves Bijaya.
Will Bijaya choose Narendra, who has lost everything in debt or will she choose Bilas who has everything?
Writing Skills - I can't say anything about Sarat Chandra's writing skills. All I want to say is the book was unputdownable.
My Review - Actually this is not a review. These are my feelings after reading the book. I just fell in love with Narendra. The character is so well portrayed, so well balanced. Every character is like that. The plot is so engaging. You will get hooked to it until you finish the book. The plot has many twists. Till the last few pages, you will think with whom Bijaya will get married. Overall I loved the book. I would highly recommend this book to those who love reading romantic novels. Also, you will get the taste of the old Bengali era while reading it.

I "read" this in audiobook format because my Bangla education as an optional subject stopped at class 3. The narration by Aparupa Sorkar is beautifully done and I'd like to hear more of her voice in audiobooks.
I don’t think there’s anything new I can say about such a classic book written in the early 1900s, but I must appreciate the fact that it has everything I love in a novel: a very interesting story of love and class differences, character-driven plots, third-person narration, social realism, and strong female characters.
Also, a small thing that I really liked is the presence of a prologue, where the author begins with glimpses of the past. The backdrop of early 20th-century Bengal casts a nostalgic image too.

This is the third attempt to read this hindi version of the book 'Dutta' by Sarat Chandra. My mom recommended it to me several times, being honest I was not that interested initially as its of romantic /drama genre and that didn't excite me much. I was blown away after reading few pages this author literally hooked me up till i finish it off and still I am in that zone where it imprint the characters emotions on me. I somehow now have developed a strong sense of recognition why people keep recommend the Sarat chandra collection. whether its Devdas or Parinita. He is the master of writing complex emotions in a simplest way possible which is the best thing I understood.
Reagarding the story, It starts with a journey of three best friend who took pledge in their childhood being together forever but as always life have its own master plan to play with hence how their words or promise have its own effects their next generation. the story have its own turns and twists. a love triangle I should say or a money minded business. Overall its a book one should give it a shot at.

I loved how the story ends with a twist. The bonding beta Bijaya and Noren. Despite of all obstacles they end up together. They didn't fall for theirs look, they just want to be together with their love.
The another side of the story is how Rasbihari end up showing his real face and how his son lately changed a bit.
The story the plots all is just beyond today's "gen z" stories. Now this become my most favorite. What I found most attractive in this story is the personality of Bijaya. I loved how she can take stand for herself . How she has a strong inner self. Noren and Bijaya they both just perfectly compliments each other.

Simple elegant gentle and placid, yet full of inner turmoil... Of class and gender wars.. A reflection of the rural and yet the urban worlds of a very modern Bengal despite being based half century ago in time
The easiest way to describe it would be to say this is a Bengali Pride and Prejudice or that P&P is an English Dotta.

এরিস্টোটেল এর মতে এই তিনটি agent একটি রচনায় থাকলে রচনাটি পাঠকদের মন নাড়িয়ে দিতে পারে। আর শরৎ স্যার এর এই উপন্যাস এর চূড়ান্ত প্রোডাক্ট। Character sketch, Character development Plot twist এ রমরমা এই উপন্যাসটি পড়ে এক মুহূর্তের জন্য মনে হয়নি যে এটা fiction.
একজন উন্নতমানের লেখক এর পরিচয় তখনই পাওয়া যায় যখন সে পাঠকদের তার লেখনিতে জড়িয়ে নিতে পারে। এটাই শরৎ স্যার এর সার্থকতা।

I have literally travelled through every moment of this book for at least 10/12times.However, it never gets old. Every time, I feel the same pain, same excitement and finally a whole bunch of peace. Bijoya, her character is such a reflection of my present self. I didn't even realise it when I read it for the first time.
And , is there anyone, who will not fall in love with Naren?
That is what a classic does.

There are some stories where 1 time reading won’t do justice. Re-reading is highly recommended as it has many layers of emotions which might get missed in the first attempt.
