A dark, well-wrought collection of poems. Almost a character study of different figures, real or imagined, that have passed through the speaker's life. Wormser's poems leave one unsettled, in the best sense.

My favorite poem "The Tape" about parents who rewatch a videotape of their daughter who was killed in a car accident when she was a teenager.

"..You stop the tape, stare at the blue screen
For a while, hear your own strangely rapid breathing.
We're born ignorant and we build on that,
You think. The tape will break one of these days.
God 2will fall from the sky one of these days,
Yet some part of you is happy-
As if you had just met someone you hadn't seen
In a long time and had found some true feeling
That had been lost. Some part of you is happy to feel the tingle of a child's life..."

"the queasy tides of human events..." "Bernard Baruch"
