Whether you're a businessperson beginning to work in the United States or a foreign student visiting for a semester, American Ways will help you navigate the diverse and changing culture of the United States. From the deep-seated attitudes that mark the American character to customs and everyday activities, Gary Althen and Janet Bennett provide invaluable information on religion, politics, education, and relationships.
I taught this in my esl classes back when I was a teacher. It can be a great resource when you can convince your students to actually read it.
I liked that what's here is different from the standard history text books I'd read in high school. It was more interesting and engaging and contained some information I'd never learned about previously.
I was hoping for an explanation of WHY American ways are what they are, but the book did say up front it wasn't going to do that. Also, I think the biggest takeaway I got from the advice for foreigners sections was, "When in doubt, just ask an American."
A very good start for those who occupy the entering level to the American culture. The book covers all aspects that could be thought of when the USA culture is considered. I rated it for 4/5 because what it lacks is profoundness. Although my intention was to touch the American culture before starting the book, I think it could have contain more practical advice. Anyways, what is very informative and useful is examples from the real life that help to identify yourself with those people mentioned there.
