Enjoyable read!

A house brownie, been with the Cracklock family for eons, but with a dark and troubled past and a new behaviour emerged that showed a totally different side to her, one that they didnt like. Before being removed from service, the reasons for this behaviour needed to be voiced and Dorcas revealed her lifetime secret that she had never before divulge.
This fantasy story takes you on a magical journey where curious fae venture into the unknown world of lifers, with disastrous consequences. The imaginative and creative skill of this author is displayed throughout with a tale fraught with danger, sadness and revenge but also capturing the feelings that come with real friendship, determination and resilience when all seems lost. I love the bond between Dorcas and Smiffy, the mischief and danger they accidentally get themselves into but their friendship never waivers. A great standalone book, highly recommended.

A tearful history of the Fae's anguish in the Lifer's realm.

"Whatever this place was, it was grocking ghastly..." an excerpt from page 112

Dorcas is one of the prominent characters in the Cracklock Saga series that I've come to find a place for in my heart, as a fan of Craig Deegan's writing. From her charismatic deeds in "Fae or Foe" to her riveting adventure at the Cracklock Manor in "The Lost and The Departed." I can't forget her courageous doings in "Alice and the Mirror Glass" and how she was caught by the dire in "Dire Sorrows." A tragic scene that I look forward to exploring its outcome in the upcoming "Coin O' The Realm." However, taking a close look at this Brownie's life, one would see how its been full of ebbs and flows. One that is much revealed in this standalone. It is a suspenseful, emotional, and melancholic history of the Fae in the Lifer's realm.

Dorcas and Smithy are two troublesome besties who truly have been causing nasty issues in Faery that even attracted the attention of the Court. They are naughty fellows who if not found stealing, would be gallivanting, or nosing around. While the issue with Sundew Quickberry and his gangs persists, Dorcas's attempt to help Dicken lingers, and Dorcas tries to save herself from the embarrassment caused by her dealings with Smithy about the Boggits's apple. Smithy advised that they go to the Lifer's realm, where no one would be able to reach them, not even the court. Dorcas contemplated this and obliged. That was how they set their way to the Lifer's realm, uncertain of the future that lay ahead of them.

There is a degree of hilarity attached to Dorcas and Smithy's characterization. One of which has me smiling as I read along: how Smithy could be so comfortable sneaking into someone else's house, how these two naughty fellows walked their way into trouble from a peaceful abode, and how they would steal, and dance in front of Lifers without being seen. While they merry, laugh, eat, and have fun, poor faes are unaware of what fate has in store for them. Then came a quick switch; the introduction of Duke Weston. This is a feature I love about Craig's writing style. The switching of characters per chapter makes me paint images in my head as I read alone. It feels as if I were watching a movie.

People were gradually losing interest in Weston's show. He was losing his audience until Thaddeus Cracklock stepped in with his suggestion. Thaddeus's idea was taken in by Weston, however, Fisher was a bit sceptical about it. Thaddeus introduced Weston and his men to the fae, whom he referred to as devils. Through the use of hagstones, he lectured and gave a bad impression of the faes to Weston and his men. They were brainwashed. Gullible as they were, they believed Thaddeus's lies. This was the beginning of the evil plan; he would use the devil to his advantage, forcing them to face the Lifers in a dreadful match, at least, that would pique the interest of viewers and generate more funds for the covetous Weston. Weston, despite sensing Thaddeus's mysteriousness and magical powers, ignored its likely consequences for the sake of money. They gathered men, known as the Black Rustlers, to hunt on faes and execute their treacherous plan. The Lifer's realm had now become a forbidden abode for the faes. Leaving an agonic tale that their generation shall read and learn from.

Dorcas and Smithy, while gallivanting and hunting for the perfect big house, got into trouble. They had mistakenly walked into the house of a Lifer who could see them; that was how they were captured, beaten, and imprisoned. This was the Genesis of their misery. They were made to join the other captured faes who would sacrifice their lives to serve as entertainment for the Lifers. Things begin to work in favour of Thaddeus and Weston. They set their show, earned a huge amount of money, and at each time experienced increasing numbers of participants. Dorcas, Smithy, and other captured faes experienced horrific pain in the cell. The feverish imposed feeling of the iron, the torturous pain of the guard's rod, the fight against the Lifer, and the death of innocent faes. There is something about this section that caught my attention. And for the first time, I felt the fae's raw pain. I was nearly brought to tears reading this section. "Whatever this place was, it was grocking ghastly."

While I contemplated the agony of the captured fae, I began to think about Thaddeus's mission with this. Why the lies against harmless fae? What's his aim in using them as a tool to execute his game? Is it for the sake of money? Is it about Weston's business? Does he love Weston that much to sacrifice the lives of innocent folks for the sake of entertainment? Or is it about his natural hostility towards the faes? On the other side of the world, information began to spread about how folks were missing in the Lifer's realm. Granny's concern was heightened; she could feel that something was wrong with Dorcas. How could it be? Fermy was going to notify the Court. What can they do to save Dorcas from the Lifer's realm?

I will restrict revealing further in an attempt to keep this review spoiler-free. However, I would like you to find out for yourself what becomes of Dorcas, Smithy, and the other faes. It was interesting how Fisher came into the plan; he would be working with the faes and Fermy. Thaddeus, on the other hand, threatens to kill his wife and daughter. I wasn't happy with how Thaddeus caught Dorcas and Smithy when they thought they had found freedom. Hilarious as it is, it's also saddening that they'll be having a second doze of fierce pain. The fight scenes read scenically. Some parts leave me aghast and suspenseful, and my heart beats as I read along. How much I loved the fight scenes! Something tragic happened: Smithy was killed by Thaddeus, and Dorcas was devastated. She was used against her will to contend with Lifers. Even when Fermy came to help, the bereaved Dorcas refused to leave. Why was she determined to stay in the Lifer's realm? To kill Thaddeus Cracklock? Would she be able to do that on her own? Can she stand the overpowering magic of Thaddeus Cracklock? How about Fisher? What becomes of him? And Duke Weston? This is a tale of loss, agony, suffering, perseverance, and strength.

There is much to say about Dorcas, but I will stop here. There is much to say about the Court in Feary, but I would like you to find out for yourself. Craig Deegan, once again proves himself to be a fantastic writer. There is something about his choice of words, punctuation, and style that intrigues me. His style of writing is one that taught me the act of storytelling. It's one that I would love to go back to again to master the act of writing. Suspenseful, wise, and pathetic. Dorcas is my favourite standalone in the series of The Cracklock Saga, and I solely recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and literature at large.

"Dorcas" by C. A. Deegan- A Captivating Read!
In "Dorcas" by C. A. Deegan, readers are taken on a captivating journey into the enigmatic past of Dorcas, the beloved Brownie who has been a cherished part of the Cracklock family for generations. Deegan weaves a tale that delves into Dorcas's origins, revealing a dark and intricate history that adds depth to this fantastical narrative.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of Faery, a realm where mischief and magic intertwine. Dorcas and Smithy, mischievous best friends, find themselves entangled in a plot that could expose Faery to the human world. The narrative is rich with elements of fantasy, from encounters with mystical creatures like Jenny Greenteeth to dealings with the notorious Boggits. Deegan creates a vivid and immersive world that sparks the imagination.
The characters, especially Dorcas and Smithy, are well-developed and endearing. Their misadventures and troublesome escapades provide both humor and a sense of the fantastical. As the narrative unfolds, the complexities of Dorcas's character are gradually revealed, shedding light on her scrappy nature and the events that shaped her.
The plot is driven by a mix of mischief, friendship, and the consequences of choices made. The narrative skillfully explores the repercussions of Dorcas and Smithy's actions, creating tension and suspense. The decision to venture into the Lifer's realm adds an element of danger and uncertainty, propelling the story forward with a sense of urgency.
Deegan's writing style is engaging and evocative, capturing the whimsy of Faery and the emotional nuances of the characters. The pacing is well-balanced, allowing readers to savor the details of Dorcas's early years while maintaining momentum through the unfolding events. One of the strengths of "Dorcas" is its ability to blend fantasy with themes of friendship, loyalty, and the consequences of one's choices. The narrative is not only an exploration of Dorcas's past but also a commentary on the complexities of relationships in a magical realm.

The story starts with an insight into Dorcas’ inner rage, and how it shocked the lifer (or human to the uninitiated) family she has been part of for generations, that had never previously seen this side of her. It shocked them so much they wanted to banish Dorcas from their lives. The story then stepped back in time and we learned where that rage was born.

So, this book tells the story of Dorcas’ early years, and the horrors that happened to her, and her best friend, Smithy, back then that have shaped her into the Brownie she is today. I wanted to scoop her up and hug her so many times reading this book. More than that I wanted to rescue her and I was totally ashamed that I sat there ‘a lifer’ reading her story.

Those of us of a certain age will remember the old black and white movies about circus folk and the horrors they lived to make the circus owners a living. Disturbing movies that tugged our heart strings and left us frustrated and tearful at the injustice! Those feelings of old are re worked into this book. A Faery tale so dark it makes your heart sore. Dorcas and her best friend Smithy are captured, tortured and used as entertainment, for the short time that Thaddeus Cracklock, with his murderous soul, plans to let them live. Devils that THEY are!

I did expect the story to circle back round to the beginning, and the decision of whether or not to banish Dorcas, but that didn’t happen. My heart says they just wouldn’t have, because I wouldn’t have.

On the one hand, it makes you want to start reading the Cracklock saga books. But on the other hand, this is a stand alone, so I wanted that answer wrapped up with a bow!

Anyone brought up on Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair books should read this immediately. I'm not a big reader of fantasy, usually, but this has me longing to read the rest of Craig Deegan's Cracklock series.

Dorcas is a standalone, and it does that well, with a complete story beautifully packaged and well-written, but it also introduces the reader to the wider world of a fairyland I'd almost forgotten about. A deligthful mix of magical creatures venture into our human world with good intentions and disasterous results in a tale that brings the magical into a metaphorical reminder that there will always be those who judge for 'otherness' and there will always be those who fight for acceptance, and kindness, love, loyalty, and determination can go a long way to right the wrongs of the world.

Dorcas is a character I rooted for from the first pages, as she faced bullies, bigotry, and heartbreak. Hooray for the good humans who stepped up to help those from the other realm, too. Perhaps all is not yet lost for humanity. At face value, this is an age-old story of creatures from fairyland; good versus evil, and what happens when magical beings enter our world, but below the surface, a timely reminder about the horrors of bigotry and racism.

I'll be reading on.

Utterly Fantastic Fantasy Frolic
What a wonderfully creative story! I can’t praise this book highly enough to do it justice. This is the third book I’ve read by Craig Deegan and while I thought the first two were unbeatable, this author has proved me wrong and topped them. Prior to reading these books, I was not a fan of fantasy but to a certain extent I am now, at least, I love this style of fantasy. Each of these books is related to the Cracklock family and it doesn’t seem to matter which you read first. Thankfully, there are plenty more for me to read.

Dorcas is not your usual style of heroine, she’s short and dumpy with a shock of uncontrollable hair. She’s also quick-tempered. However, she has such an endearing warm heart you can’t help but root for her. I love the way she talks. That must have been a challenge for the author, it's so well done. I also admire the way she throws herself into the path of danger to help others. Her courage is amazing. Readers will love her as I do. Well worth a read. I can see this as a Disney film. I’d have no hesitation in recommending it to everyone, fantasy lover or not.

A great Fairy Tale of Intrigue! This novel presents an interesting view of the Faery world and the delightful fae characters of Dorcas and her sidekick Smithy as they venture into the lifer realm and become involved in life-or-death situations. I found the characters engaging and wonderfully relatable. The plot has many ups and downs, and I was thoroughly drawn into the emotions of the story throughout.
There is intrigue, tension, feel-good family interactions, some dark horror, and deadly struggles. The ultimate struggle is that Dorcas must find a way to defeat the evil lifers (humans) intent on destroying her and her kind.
1 highly recommend this book, even to those readers not fans of fairy tale fantasy. That is not my usual genre to read but I loved this book and now would like to read more of the Cracklocks and Dorcas.

I’m a big fan of YA Fantasy/adventure, the cover of Dorcas piqued my interest so I decided to give it a try.

Whilst this is an accompaniment to Deegan’s Cracklock series, it is a standalone and as someone who hasn’t read any of the main series, it was a fantastic introduction to a world which I can’t wait to jump back in to. It’s a beautiful story, full of adventure, friendship and a little heartache with a delightful cast of characters to boot. Dorcas and Smithy were easy to love, I was rooting for them from the start, hoping that good would win out against the evil lifers. Minty was a character that I absolutely loved, overcoming adversity and fighting for what he knows is right.

Ican’t wait to read more from Deegan, I’ve already picked up book 1 in The Cracklock Saga because I need more from this universe!

A real tear-jerker

Both kinds of tears. I've been making my way through the Cracklock Saga and loving every page, but Dorcas has always been my favorite character. So, I was absolutely thrilled to read her origin story. As always, Deegan's creativity and flair brought every scene to life. From the beauty of a pure friendship between misfits Dorcas and "Smiffy," to the dire tension in an arena where fae are forced to fight for their lives, and the finality of a bittersweet end ---beginning--- for our little Brownie. I loved the foreshadowing of events yet to come and the backstory to how Dorcas got her unique rolling pin. I definitely reccomend the Cracklock series in its entirety. Maybe with a nice cup of peppermint tea.

Endearing and Adventurous Fairy Tale
I loved reading that C. A. Deegan despaired at the available fairy tales to read to his children, so he set out to write worthy ones. He succeeded! Dark to light. Moral triumphs. Memorable parables. I fell rightly in love with Dorcas and Smithy. Such adorable and galvanizing characters. The character development of Minty was thoroughly satisfying. I could picture the scenes of this story so well it seemed to come alive for me. The Folk dialect of the characters is delightful. Although this is a modern book, it held a nostalgic feel to it. It harkens back to the fairy tales of old. Don’t miss this endearing book! Highly recommend!

I love Dorcas

Oh Dorcas! I loved her from the first Cracklock book but now I see how very special she is. She’s my favourite of all the characters in this series and old Granny is a close second. If you’re new to the Cracklock series, Dorcas is a great standalone. You don’t need to have read the others to understand the story. C.A Deegan has skilfully crafted a unique world, and this story is exciting from the start. But it’s also dark, really really dark, and it highlights just how evil humans can be.

Hard to know what to say about this fabulous book. I've loved every one of the Cracklock books I've read so far and this is no exception. Dorcas is a key character in the Cracklock series, and reading her story makes you love her all the more, understanding what terrible traumatic events she faced when she was only young.
In many ways, this is a terribly dark story, but it's also the story of love, determination, bravery, changed hearts and life lessons. I loved it. Long may Dorcas reign in the series!

Another beautifully spun tale

If you haven’t read this series then I’m sure you enjoyed getting to know Dorcas and the other characters. But for those of us who have this was a beautiful insight into how Dorcas became the brownie we know and love. As always this lovingly written tale is enthralling as it takes you on a journey to a place we wish really existed.
A cleverly entwined message will make sure you find everything you need within the pages of this book.

A Great Standalone

Having read some of the cracklock saga books, it was wonderful to learn about Dorcas' past. Deegan is a great storyteller and weaves yet another vivid story full of both heartwarming and sad moments as we learn all about Dorcas and what she went through to become the brownie we know and love. Highly recommended, especially if you have read the Cracklock saga. If not, read this and then delve in!

A Brownie nanny, devoted to her human family, suddenly shows just how aggressive she can be when confronted by a bad fae who threatens her family. She then feels obliged to confess her past dark history to her friend and employer.
Starts off quite cosily, then becomes more and more exciting as the truth is revealed.
Thoroughly recommended to fans of Fae or fantasy.

At first this book was slow. I felt it would be a slow read. However about halfway I was enthralled. The deviousness of this story was captivating. There were some loveable characters and some characters I despised. This is a powerful emotional book. The ending was brilliant and left you craving more. I enjoyed this book and plan on reading other books in the series.

Everybody's Favourite Brownie.

Oh, come on. Who doesn’t love Dorcas? She’s great.

From her adorable, quirky speech pattern to her rolling pin, that’s never far from her hand to attack with, she’s perfect. In this book, we sidestep the ongoing saga and look at Dorcas’ life. Readers are treated to a compelling and darkly enchanting exploration of her past.
Dorcas, the Brownie, longstanding friend and Nanny to the Cracklock family, is an inspired character with a story to tell. She started life as a charming and very naughty brownie in Fae, and it was there that her character grew and developed into the girl we all love. The narrative takes us away from twinkling fairy songs to the dark corners of Fae. The story is a blend of intrigue, magic, and the consequence of innocent mischief gone too far.

The emotional depth given to the character is lovely. And we encounter mythical beings like Jenny Greenteeth ( I love her). We find out the reasons behind Dorcas’ scrappy nature, as the story of ancient lore unfolds. The narrative is immersive and chilling and takes us to the intersection between the faery realm and our own, where we can flit between the two. The story is about friendships tested and how one little brownie will fight tooth and nail for the ones she loves.

And Dorcas does love so very fiercely.
Brilliant.
