One wardrobe malfunction. Two people who don’t belong together. Three awful “Be my wife.”
Everyone else is at this party to marry the host. I’m only here until I can get a ride home. When my dress rips in the world’s worst-timed wardrobe malfunction, I go find somewhere quiet to fix it.
So I’m standing there in nothing but my heels when, As my luck would have it, the door opens…
And the man of the hour walks in.
I wish I could say I played it cool. But it’s been a looong time since anyone has seen me in my birthday suit… Much less the hottest man I’ve ever laid eyes on.
All I want to do is fix my dress, click my heels three times, and be back on my couch in fuzzy slippers. But Ivan has other ideas.
He’s decided who he’s taking to the altar… And I don’t have a choice but to say “I do.”
COGNAC VILLAIN is Book One in the Pushkin Bratva duet. Ivan and Cora’s story concludes in Book Two, COGNAC VIXEN!
Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
Book 1 started out strong and intriguing and a little hilarious too 🤣.. The sexy spice🌶🌶🌶🌶 stayed throughout the book for the most part as well.🥵🥵
But somewhere along the way it became too simple and almost ridiculous how certain major reveals on this journey came about. In many ways it made this Russian Bravta look beyond incompetent and weak.. And I don't like that at all.
But it was still just intriguing enough to keep me reading.👀
Still, the way this one ended ticked me off.. Also, I knew who the secret Villain was in chapter 1, before chapter 82 finally confirmed it. Go figure🥱🥱
So since this is just a two book series, and Ivan and Cora's story concludes in book 2, I will read that one. If only to see if the Author can redeem what was given here, in book 1.
Decent enough read in this genre, that I would recommend this book.
The first half of this book was amazing and the chemistry between the main characters was fantastic. However it kind of went on for too long in my opinion and some of the scenes seemed a little mild for a book about men in the bratva. I ended up skimming the last 30% of this book because I just wanted it to be over. And even though it ends on the cliffhanger of the MFC being kidnapped and the MMC forced to marry another to keep the MFC alive I just don’t care to read the next book to see what happens.

I read this entire book just for it to end with him being blackmailed into marrying an OW. I know this is a romance and ultimately it will be an HEA for Ivan and Cora but I’m not interested in seeing the hero fake engaged or married to any OW. Fuck that.

The ads and snippets on this book seemed very promising but alas, I’m highly disappointed. As many other books, there is a damsel in distress saved by the grumpy surly villain who always forces his way because he’s an alphahole and a female lead who always yields because she has zero control over her libido and falls in love *insert eye roll*. I don’t mind the cliche plots as long as the story telling is good and the characters are bearable.
What I didn’t like in the book: 1. The characters’ speech is equivalent to that of teenagers rather than adults. I’d expect people who come from wealthy backgrounds to be more eloquent and articulate. 2. MFC: Often times she got on my nerves with how stupid, stubborn, and childish she was being. This female character has no self-preservation, no situational awareness, and no common sense. For example, an assassin JUST tried to kill her and she finds out he has a boss who wants her dead yet she wants to go back to her apartment pretending la di daa nothing will happen. Also, she doesn’t know what a bratva is???? Seriously??? Is she living under a rock??? Does she not watch movies or read books??? Are they living in pre-tech era that she can’t google??? Not realistic at all. Also, the hot and cold attitude got old really fast. She hates him. She likes him. She hates him. She’s so turned on and wants to do him. She hates him. The cake tasting scene was just so cringe. 3. MMC: Surprisingly very stupid for a mafia boss. For example, he constantly stuck his head in the sand instead of forcing answers out of the female lead. He’s supposed to be the most feared yet we were given no scenes or examples to prove his ruthlessness other than he shot the assassin in the head. Also, this man never spoke normally. Whenever he speaks, it’s always growling. Is he a Russian bear? 😂 For the most feared mafia family, they rarely spoke of anything other than trading barbs with eat other and gossiping like school girls.
The book is unnecessarily long in my opinion. Multiple time I’ve found myself skimming just to get to the point (or end of the chapter). Based on the reviews, I won’t be reading book 2. I fear I may get an aneurysm if I keep trying to not roll my eyes so hard.
It could’ve been shorter. This didn’t need to be 85 relatively short chapters. The chapters should have been longer as not all of them had much going on in my opinion.
Another Nicole Fox mafia book that sucked me in immediately! This is book 1 of the Pushkin Bratva duet and it follows the story of Ivan and Cora. It all started after Ivan saves Cora from a man groping her at a party and her having a bit of a wardrobe malfunction that had Cora standing completely naked in front of Ivan. Their chemistry is undeniable from the start and I enjoyed the plot. I couldn't put this down and cannot wait to see how things play out in book 2 of their duet! Definitely recommend!
Characters rating: 4.50 Plot 5++ Originality 5 Bratva theme 4 Editing 5 Character Dev: 4.5 Steamy Sex 5++ Suspense 5 Story line 5
The first book in the duet initially sets up a strong plot, good characters and a story line that was refreshingly different in "fake or forced marriages". I love how the author took this story and made it her own with unique twists and turns and revelations. I was engaged from the first page. Cora and Ivan were characters that would have never crossed paths had it not been for the torn dress and the drunk at the "find a wife" event for Ivan. What follows is a mixed bag of events that unfold (too slowly at times) that includes Ivan, Yasha, Jorden, Francia, Mikhail, Konstantin and her so called mother and step-dad. The story is well-developed , but did lag at times. This book is very long, so hopefully book 2 will refine some of the storyline and move at a more steady pace.
Once Ivan and Cora hook up everything changes when he seeks her out at her work and demands/threaten Cora to return to home as his fake-fiancé to keep her safe and use her as a pawn to find out who is targeting his family. He doesn't really believe her story, and thinks she may have been sent to infiltrates the Pushkin Bratva. The biggest issue between these two characters is lack of communication. Their communication in book one was horrible. Too much drama at times because these two settle everything with sex instead of talking. Ivan's character is very hot and cold and can be a complete ass at times, saying terrible things to Cora, while fighting an internal war within himself to believe Cora. Cora, on the other hand hides crucial information from Ivan that could have shed some light on what was actually going.
The Trojan Horse in this book is Francia because her character is nothing like how the author originally portrays her. By books end, her true personality comes out and Cora finds Francia really is a bat shit crazy woman who is seeking revenge. She becomes extremely dangerous as book 2 begins.
A bit long for one book, but a solid original read.
I need to stop buying into the hype of this author. This is now 2 series that just such!
Let me be straightforward – this book didn't manage to capture my interest effectively. Despite the glowing reviews it received, I found the pacing sluggish and the narrative quite irksome. It felt like the plot had been unnecessarily extended to span two books, dragging the story out beyond necessity.
Ivan Pushkin, an intimidating figure within the Bratva, is portrayed as someone feared by most and desired by many for marriage. Cora's entry into his 'pick a bride' event positions him as a significant and perilous character. However, Ivan's portrayal raises questions, as he appears content with remaining oblivious to certain crucial aspects. One of these aspects is Cora's true identity, which he doesn't push her to uncover. Moreover, even Cora's friend Francia – the alias Cora used to gain entry – isn't subjected to intense scrutiny by Ivan. This lack of investigative zeal struck me as unrealistic and at odds with Ivan's supposed vigilance.
Suspicion mounted early on, and the identity of the antagonist became apparent quite quickly. Cora's reluctance to be confined, even if it's for her own safety, contrasts with Ivan's willingness to jeopardize his own life to protect her. Astonishingly, Cora doesn't even share her real name with Ivan, an individual who risks so much for her sake. The overall atmosphere exudes a sense of contentment with ignorance that feels off-putting.
Cora's occupation as a waitress alongside Francia surprisingly raises no questions about the financial feasibility of Francia's high-end lifestyle, let alone her invitation to the exclusive 'Bride for Ivan' event. The narrative's inconsistencies and oversights create a chaotic landscape. In retrospect, I realize I should have abandoned ship earlier, but the positive reviews kept me hanging on, albeit with some skimming to hasten my progress.
His name is IVAN PUSHKIN. "He tastes like cognac and bad decisions."

"Someone told me once that background actors in a movie are taught to whisper "watermelon watermelon watermelon" over and over again to pretend like they're having actual conversations. That's what this feels like. Except instead of whispering "watermelon," they're whispering two words. It takes a while for me to make them out, but when I do, something in the phrase makes me feel like there’s a cold breeze rushing over my skin. Ivan Pushkin. Again and again, everywhere we go, that's what I hear. Ivan Pushkin. Ivan Pushkin. It rises up from every single group we pass without fail. There’s a strange sort of skittishness in the air, too. Every female between the ages of eighteen and forty keeps checking over their shoulders like they know something we don’t. Like something important is coming and they want to look their best when it gets here. (..) The man who just rescued me from Mr. Handsy Douche Bag is currently smoldering down in my direction. He looks like if testosterone had a face. Pure, rippling masculinity. Eyes like preserved honey. Hands that, even now, are flexing and unflexing like they’re capable of doing so much more. The second reason is that, if I move out of this corner, Prince Testosterone and all the rubber-necking onlookers will get an eyeful of my bare butt. That’s because, when the douche bag tried to paw at me, he ripped my dress all the way up the back seams. I can feel the cold breeze of the air conditioning blowing where I really wish it wouldn’t."
Nicole Fox does it again! If you're a fan of mafia romance then Ms. Fox should be your go to author! Ivan and Cora have a Cinderella type meet cute. If Cinderella was running from her evil step-father, hooked up with the Prince when they met at the ball, and the Prince was actually the heir to Bravta (russian mafia). After Ivan and Cora's hot night together at the ball Cora is perfectly fine(so she tells herself) with not seeing Ivan again. Especially when she learns he is part of the rich and elite lifestyle that she is feeling from. She is pretty confident that the ball will be the last time she will see Ivan since she gave him a fake name. However, Ivan is intrigued and shows up at her job the next day. Danger and Drama ensues and the solution to the problem is to fake an engagement. But it quickly becomes obvious there is more lust and caring involved then either wants to admit. As soon as you think they may admit to these feelings outside sources begin to interfere. I greatly enjoyed the tender moments and the banter between the MC's, the side characters and some of the comic relief they bring, the action and mystery, and the the bonus romance the seems to be brewing. Overall a greatly enjoyed the first book of the duet and will 100% be reading the conclusion in August.

Quick Summary: A two snaps and a thumbs up dark mafia romance
My Review: Cognac Villain by Nicole Fox is the first installment in a two-book duo. It is part of the Pushkin Bratva set.
About the Book: Running from a past she never wanted, Cora St. Clair ran right into the arms of danger himself. In the arms of Ivan Pushkin, she found her own personal hell and her own personal salvation. When her life was repeatedly put in jeopardy by unseen enemies, she was faced with having to make some hard decisions. What would she ultimately choose to do where her heart, her body, and her soul were concerned?
My Final Say: This book was fire! I can't get to book two fast enough.
Rating: 5/5 Recommend: Yes Audience: A Re-read: Yes Keeper: Yes Favorites Shelf: Yes Status: M Level: 🔥
okay so this just took me right back to the days in which I read horrid amounts of Harry Styles wattpad mafia fanfic.
My only question is why didn’t the main guy (Ivan) literally fire everyone working for him because they seemed so very incompetent. Also the plot in this one didn’t hold up that well I must say.
First half was amazing. The tension, the build up, the spice 🔥 but after that, it went down hill. I think it took too lokg for the big reveal of the villian. Plus the Bratva was made out to be soft. They were incompetent and made decisions i dont think would actually happen. The ending was a cliffhanger but it isn't enough for me to want to continue on. I'll just read spoilers for book 2.
Another fantastic book from Nicole. Nicole always knows how to draw the reader straight in and I was hooked within a couple of pages.
The story unfolds really well and the main characters really make you feel for them. I don’t want to add any spoilers but I had kind of suspected the twist at the end and now can’t wait to find out how the story ends!! I really hope the bad egg doesn’t get her way!.

I’m so confused about all the 5 star ratings. I made it to 63% before I decided to give up bc holy shit???? How was I at 63% and they were still “hating” eachother? I could name 5 mafia romances with this same exact trope and maybe even same exact storyline with more chemistry and maturity than these two idiots. I was team Cora till the fourth time she flip flopped from “I hate him” to “but I’m horny” not to mention one of the sex scenes was so cringe bc mans was doing anything to put distance between them during and abruptly leaving after like that’s so embarrassing I can’t believe she still felt sexual attraction to him. This just become so repetitive and monotonous and after the third attempt on her life I no longer cared about Cora or Ivan and was ready for whatever villain to come and put me out of my misery. Lastly, there was NO need for this book to be 500+ pages long especially considering how repitive and dragged out everything is.
Well, for being a bratva boss... certainly Ivan is weak. He's played in every corner by everyone. I understand the writer wanted her story to go a certain way, but she should have found a way without making the hero look like a loser!
I absolutely love Nicole Fox! I enjoy her books so much and this one was no different. I enjoyed Ivan and Cora’s story. I liked Cora from the very start. She was happy with her life and tired not to look back at her old life. Once she met Ivan things took a very scary turn. But this brought them together even though Ivan won’t admit it he fell very hard for Cora. Can’t wait to see what book 2 offers and how their story ends.

I was so enamored with this first book! I have had many of Nicole Fox books in my TBR list, but have not taken the leap. I am so glad I went for this ARC! I will be working my way through the rest of her books now and cannot wait for the second one to be available to read! Cora and Ivan are such a great dynamic with each other and play well off of each other.

I like the overall plot. Ivan is secretive, and he distrusts most people. Cora also has secrets. I like the action and steamy scenes. Cora frustrates me. Her life is in danger, and she decides not to tell Ivan things that will help him. Cora has little sense of self- preservation. The cliffhanger is mainly because she refuses to tell him who would be after her and why. I will read the reviews for the second book to see if I want to read.
Evolution of my rating in what I initially thought was a good book:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - Consistency - Heroine is never clearly described, aside from being "gorgeous." At one point she has "dark hair," then it shifts to "golden brown," then a few pages later it's "chestnut" (aka reddish in color). No consistency. In addition to that, we are told that this is the Bratva, yet the pakhan is referred to as a "Don." Even a Wikipedia page could've corrected this. Bratva is the Russian mafia - a Don is a title for the Italian mafia (aka Cosa Nostra). A ridiculous mistake for such a book. Yet we also have Russian phrases like Otets - I thought this was the father's name and finally had to Google to see it's a phrase for father.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Way too many chapters and stilted separations. For instance, at the end of one chapter she gets a phone call, the beginning of the next chapter is still in her POV and picks up with her answering the call. 85 chapters is ridiculous.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Continuity - we're told a friend never invites her to her apartment, then later in the book it talks about all the hours spent at the same friend's apartment.
⭐️⭐️ - Third act stupidity, on all parts. The heroine believes a stupid internet rumor and accuses him of something heinous, earning her TSTL status at such a late point in the book (I started skimming after this). The hero, in spite of thinking of himself as a badass, becomes a certified wimp. And then the big reveal of her past - which she was an idiot for not telling herself - is found with a simple Google search. 🙄
⭐️.5 - For the painfully obvious whodunit. I figured it out by Chapter 3. 500 pages later and I was yawning as I skimmed over the reveal.
.5 - Always and forever will I take a star off for a cliffhanger. These money grabs by newer authors is pathetic. This could've been an amazing 5 star book, but a useless cliffhanger will turn it into a 4 star even in that scenario. FINISH YOUR DAMN BOOKS! And if you want to continue the story with the same couple, have enough integrity to trust that you will retain your audience without the gimmick of a cliffhanger. It's worked for JD Robb for over 30 years and over 55+ books and she has never needed a stupid cliffhanger!
FINAL RATING: 0.5 stars. And I was being generous. An interesting story in the first half doesn't even retain my interest enough to bother with the conclusion. If the point can't be made in 500+ pages and needs to try to sucker people in to read the conclusion, I have no faith in the second half redeeming it.
Mafia bratva Really sexy meet cute 🥰 Obsessed with her from the very first moment Heroine in hiding Fake engagement 💍 Crazy family who trying to control her The chemistry is off the charts 🔥🔥 Finally going after what she wants type story I think the story is really cute specially because of how they first met I was holding on by a thread. I honestly knew from a very beginning of one of the friends was gonna be the backstabbing bitc**, but I was kind of shocked at the end. Loved this story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WARNING: Reading this book may make you spontaneously combust. Fox’s latest dark Bratva romance is contributing to the heat wave and global warming, at least as far as my Kindle is concerned. The first seven chapters have you gripping the edge of your seat and chapters 8 and 9, singe your eyebrows as your Kindle turn into an incendiary device. I hope I have conveyed how smoking hot this novel is ❤️🔥. Below is a long list of characters with brief descriptions; they are central to this novel and critical to know for “Cognac Vixen” - the conclusion to Cora and Ivan’s story.
Cordelia St. Clair - Cora, a young woman who left home to work as a waitress, after her stepfather tried to marry her off to Mikhail Sokolov. Jorden and Francia Delacour - Cora’s besties and waitresses at a dive called Quintano’s Alexander McAllister - Cora’s stepfather, a pompous weasel who is desperate to gain access to organized crime social circles and willing to use marriage to Cora as leverage. Evaline McAllister - Cora’s biological mother; cold, worthless, selfish Marcus St. Clair - Cora’s biological father, a legitimate attorney
Ivan Pushkin - wants to take over as Pakhan so he promised his father that he would marry a “proper” woman, if Otets allowed his sister, Anya marry Lev - a Bratva soldier, but beneath her status. Anya - Ivan’s sister Boris Pushkin - their father; the obnoxious aging pakhan who is reluctant to relinquish his throne. Niles - Ivan’s steward, butler, caretaker who Yasha refers to as the cryptkeeper Yasha - Ivan’s right hand man
Konstantin Sokolov - head of the Sokolov Bratva Mikhail Sokolov - Konstantin’s son; and like his father, a sadist and psychopath Katerina Sokolov - eldest daughter who was previously betrothed to Ivan, but has gone missing
Ivan meets Cora at his home while hosting a party to potentially meet his future fiancée. Cora is posing as Francia, so that she and Jorden can gain access to the party and simply have a good time. Ivan rescues her from a handsy guest who accidentally ripped her dress. Racing away and hiding in Ivan’s office to repair the damaged dress, Cora is interrupted again by Ivan who offers her his jacket. A few drinks later, Ivan has penetrated Cora’s dwindling defenses and he makes a lasting impression on her and vice versa. Read how Ivan finds where Cora works, who she really is and why she’s being targeted for assassination. In order to protect her and her friends, Ivan decides to marry Cora, rather pretend to be betrothed.
This enemies to lovers romance has the usual Bratva arranged marriage agreements, betrayals, subterfuge, violence and the different families jockeying for the most power. What’s different is that Cora, basically an unimportant young woman and not a Bratva/Mafia princess, is a threat to someone who believes that Cora is actually Ivan’s future bride. Any event that Cora attends, her life is threatened. It’s obvious there is a traitor in their midst and who it is. That was my only disappointment regarding the plot - the predictable identity of the traitor. Both MC’s are well developed, interesting, likeable and in stark contrast to the villains who are deliciously evil. Enjoy another outstanding Bratva duet authored by Fox. She, Anna Zaires, J. T. Geissinger and Zoe Blake are definitely the reigning royalty of dark Bratva/Mafia romances. I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
Cora use to live with her mother and stepfather. Her stepfather wanted her to marry a wealthy connected man. Mikhail is the son of a mafia man and he is now engaged to Cordelia. Ivan is the next in line to be pakhan of the Pushkin Bratva. He made a deal with his father to let his sister Anya marry the man she loved and Ivan would agree to an arranged marriage. His first fiancée disappeared so his father is throwing him a party to find a new fiancée. Ivan sees Cora being harassed and he helps her. Ivan follows Cora to his office where she is trying to fix the ruined dress. Ivan walks in to find Cora naked. They end up having sex. It’s the best that either has ever had. The next day Ivan goes to Quintaño’s to find Cora. As they are talking a sniper tries to kill Cora. This is not the only time that Ivan will save Cora. Ivan wants Cora to be his fake fiancée and stay with him until he finds the person responsible for trying to kill her. Ivan and Cora spend a lot of time together. Cora starts to fall for her fake fiancé. Ivan tries to keep his emotions in check but he is falling for Cora. As Cora is trying on wedding dresses with Anya, Jorden and Francia Anya says something about Katerina Ivan’s first fiancée and then she won’t explain so Francia looks up information on Ivan and Katerina and finds out that Katerina disappeared. Ivan shows up and kicks everyone out. Cora confronts Ivan about the disappearance of Katerina and he won’t tell her so she threatens to leave. Ivan has Yasha his right hand man and best friend take Cora to Jorden’s place. Ivan feels he can concentrate better without Cora around and he can stop thinking about her so he can focus on the Bratva but he can’t. Ivan gets a call from Cora that scares him. Will Ivan be able to save Cora again? Will Ivan think Cora has been spying on him when he finds out that she was engaged to Mikhail and her real name is Cordelia? Will Cora survive the betrayal of her best friend? Will Ivan be able to find Cora? I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book via Booksprout.
