Carrie Elks is an international bestselling author of traditionally-published and self-published novels. Her books are sweet yet sexy contemporary small town romance stories. You can find her in all these places:
Carrie Elks is amazing at writing slow burn friends to lovers romance where the main characters has this amazing chemistry but they know that they have obstacles they have to fight through before they even have a chance to figure out if they are meant to be. I love her writing and I loved this book to.
Brecken Miller is a contractor who moves back to Angel Sands after 13 years to build a resort. When he was 17 he and his younger brother Daniel lost their mother to cancer on Christmas Day and they are taken away from all of their friends and everything they have ever known, by their father who lives in Boston. His best friend was/is Lucas who is marrying Ember. These two characters found each other in the first book of the “Angel Sands” series, and they are such a wonderful couple. Brecken is one of the groomsmen and for the first time after 13 years he sees Lucas’s sister Caitie. Caitie has had a crush on Brecken ever since she can remember and he was her first kiss. Caitie accepts the challenge to help Lucas and Ember to make their wedding happen since they want a Christmas wedding and they only have 2 month to find a venue and get everything in order. Brecken decides to help her and things take of from there.
I loved Brecken. He is so caring and attentive towards Caitie and he knows and remembers a lot about her problems and how to help her when not even her own family knows about it. He is also very closed of about his own problems and anxiety and that creates a misunderstanding in the end but it is fortunately solved really fast. He hates Christmas because of everything that happened the Christmas his mother died. He also hates confrontation and does everything he can not to hurt his friends or his family. He is a surfer with a great body and he is the sweetest hero. Caitie is a holiday planner and she works on Christmas events all year around and she hates to live near the waterfront. She is amazing, forgiving, strong, strong minded and she knows what she wants. She is very caring and will do anything to help the people she loves. These two characters are so different from each other but they make sense together and that is what matters. They are so amazing together.
One thing that I didn’t like was that each of their friend groups meddles in their love life and push them both to date other people and they don’t get a say. Another is Rachel who is so clingy and annoyed me so much.
I can definitely recommend this book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another trip to Angel Sands, and another beautifully written romance.
This cast of characters just keeps getting better and better, I never want too leave. I feel like it's a TV show that I have to wait for weekly updates.
Cait and Breck are great lead characters who, while perfect for one another, are flawed and relateable. Add in the Christmas vibe and the entire book is gorgeous.
I can't wait for even more from this California beachside town that I wish was real so I could move there.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.
‘Just a kiss’ is the fourth book in the ‘Angel Sands’ series (Angel Sands is a small beach town in California). If you have read the previous books in this series, you will recognize quite a few names and people in this story. And you will be happy to know that this story has Lucas and Ember’s wedding in it!! But if you haven’t read any of the books in this series, don’t worry, you can perfectly read this story without having to read the other ones first.
I have read all the books in the ‘Angel Sands’ series and I have enjoyed them all very much. So I was very looking forward to the next book in this series but ‘Just a kiss’ is extra special because it’s also has a Christmas theme in it and being a big fan of Christmas stories, I couldn’t wait to read it. This story may not have snow in it, but believe me when I tell you that it has ALL the feel of Christmas in it!! It’s definitely a Christmas story!
I enjoyed this story very much. It’s told from both POV’s. I liked the main characters, Caitie and Breck very much. They were goodhearted, intelligent, patient and lovely people and I loved the chemistry between them. But just like every human, they weren’t perfect. Both had experience a dramatic event in their youth and both were still suffering from it, each in their own way. But if they want to build a relationship with each other, they have to face their fear and learn that running away from is, isn’t the best way to deal with it. But don’t worry! This isn’t a dark story. No! ‘Just a kiss’ is a sweet, light, easy-to-read story about friendship, family, hope, Christmas but especially about love.
Minor characters: Lucas (his best friend/her older brother), Ember (Lucas’s fiancé/wife), Rachel (Ember”s friend)
My thoughts:
I want more from this series. I wanted more of both of their phobias. It was written to be giant plot points and character identities, but overall they weren’t developed. Caite has a water phobia that she constantly brings up, but the moment the reader finds out why she has it is about a small paragraph. His Christmas phobia causes him to break up with her, but he’s back and forgiven in about a day. I think overall the author just wants lighter stories. Where I want something deeper.
Summary:
Breck is the oldest of two boys. His parents split up when he was young and he stayed with his mom in Angel Sands.
He was best friends with Lucas. They were always together, and Catie tagged along.
When he was a teenager his mom died a few da us before Christmas. He and his brother spent three days with Lucas’s family while their dad flew into town to pick them up.
They were devastated. Lucas’s family was wonderful, but he grew to hate all things Christmas.
His dad came and moved him and his brother to Boston. It was difficult but eventually he settled in and grew to love his dad. He got into the family construction company.
Years later his company is hired to renovate the abandoned Angel Sands Resort.
Catie is Lucas’s younger sister. She grew up chasing after her brother and his friends. She had a massive crush on Breck.
One day she stole Lucas’s surfboard and almost drowned. She developed a fear of the ocean.
When Brecks mom died and he stayed with them for Christmas she snuck a kiss while he was asleep. It changed her.
She fell in love with Christmas because it made her feel close to Breck. She grew up and moved to New York. She started her own company decorating for the holidays.
She gets offered a big hotel chain in LA at the same time Lucas and Ember ask her to help plan their wedding, so she comes back to Angel Sands.
Breck sees her and is so shocked by how grown up she is. They talk and she’s shocked he remembers her issues with water. That he knew it was a big deal for her.
He meets Rachel, Ember’s friend. Rachel is part of the wedding party and is instantly attracted to Breck. He thinks she’s nice but isn’t interested.
She goes to a dress fitting with Ember and meets Rachel. She hears Rachel talking about Breck and realizes there’s something between them.
She hasn’t been able to find a wedding venue and he steps in to help. He knows the owner of another resort and they agree to let Lucas have the wedding. He tells her and they go out to see it.
They talk about her fear of water and he asks if she’s tried therapy.
Her mom invites him and Rachel to thanksgiving dinner. At first he’s excited to see Catie, until he finds out Rachel will be there.
Rachel talks him into lunch, by telling him it’s to plan wedding things. He knows it’s not all about the wedding but agrees to go for Lucas.
At thanksgiving she overhears Rachel talking about their lunch and realizes they’re dating now. She’s hurt, but knows she has no reason to be. She knows Breck never thought of her in a romantic way. That even if he did like her they aren’t compatible. They live on opposite sides of the country, she loves Christmas while he hates it, she hates the beach while he loves it.
The next day her mom asks her to take Breck his sweater he left the night before. He lives in the beach and she has a panic attack before she gets to his front door.
He finds her and helps her through it. He’s concerned and tells her she can’t live like that. The tension snaps me they kiss. It’s life changing and they get carried away.
Rachel calls and she realizes what they’re doing. She pulls away and apologizes. She tells him she knows it was a mistake. That she knows he’s not that type of guy. That she won’t tell Rachel and asks that he won’t. He’s confused.
She rushes out as Rachel shows up.
She goes to LA and is mortified. Her friend tells her to call him. That she thinks he’s not serious about Rachel and the only way to know for sure is to talk to him.
Caite calls him while he’s with Lucas. He doesn’t want Lucas to know it’s her so he’s short with her and explains he’s with someone and can’t talk. She assumes it’s Rachel and realizes he’s trying to brush her off. She embarrassed and knows it’s done with him.
He tries calling her back but she won’t answer her calls. He knows she’s in LA for her big pitch meetings and decides to go to her.
He waits for her in her hotel lobby. She asks if Rachel knows he’s there. He’s confused and she explains that she knows it’s innocent between them but Rachel might not think so.
He realizes she thinks he’s dating Rachel. He tells her he isn’t dating Rachel, that he would never have kissed her if he was seeing someone else.
They admit they like each other and have sex. It’s life changing. They decide to see each other, but not tell anyone until after Lucas’s wedding. They don’t want to cause any drama.
They go back to their lives but keep in constant contact. She comes back into town a few weeks later to finalize wedding details and he surprises her at her hotel.
They talk about her fear of water and he wants to help her. They try exposure therapy at the pool and she has a panic attack. She’s embarrassed but he’s just proud of her for trying.
Finally it’s the rehearsal dinner before the wedding. Rachel is practically glued to his side and Caite is busy planning the event so they don’t get to interact much. Plus all their friends and family are around.
The wedding is a few days before Christmas so it’s all Christmas themed. Breck starts having a panic attack and leaves the dinner early. Caite wants to check on him but she gets pulled away with wedding details.
At the end of the night she finally gets a break and goes to his room to find him packing. He tells her he can’t stay for the wedding. That he needs to leave.
She’s confused and realizes it’s related to his moms death, but he won’t talk to her. He tells her it won’t work between them and he has to go.
She’s devastated but he leaves.
By time he gets home he realizes he made a mistake but it’s too late to try and fix things. He feels awful because he knows how hard she worked on the wedding, and he caused her more problems. He knows she deserves better than him.
The next day is the wedding. Everyone thinks he got sick and had to go home.
He talks to his dad and brother and explains how he messed up. That he can’t stand Christmas but it means everything to her. They tell him if she’s worth it he’ll push through. That Christmas is just a day and his mom is always with him. He decides to move past his fears because he wants her.
He goes to her house on Christmas Eve morning to apologize. She’s hurt but listens. He explains his feelings about the holiday and his mom. How he wants to get better and be better for her because he’s in love with her.
On Christmas morning he goes to Lucas’s house and tells him he’s been sleeping with Caite because he’s in love with her. Lucas punches him in the face. Once the shock wears off Lucas understands. Breck promises to take care of her if she lets him.
She tells her mom about her fear of the ocean. That she hid it since she was a child, but that’s why she moved away and doesn’t visit often. Her mom feels bad she didn’t know. Caite decides to see a therapist to help her get past her fear.
He goes to see Caite and tells her he told Lucas he’s in love with her. That he wants to be with her. She forgives him and tells him she loves him too.
She got the LA job so she moved to LA. They date long distance.
6 months later she moves to Angel Sands with Breck. They get an apartment with a spare bedroom so her best friend Harper, who she’s lived with since college, can come stay whenever she wants. They find out Lucas and Ember are having a baby.

Cait has returned to her hometown to celebrate her brother’s engagement and finds herself planning their Christmas wedding. What she wasn’t expecting was to reconnect with her brother’s best friend Breck or that the feelings she had on him as a teenager is stronger than ever.
Brecken has recently returned to town after being away for 13 years when a personal tragedy changed his life. Seeing Cait again brings up all the feelings that have been lying dormant but between their pasts and the obstacles that life throws in their way their journey is not without its ups and downs.
It is always fun to visit Angel Springs and this book is no exception. Seeing Cait and Breck find their way was fun to watch and it is always great to catch up with the other characters we know and love.
Wow yet another fab read in Carrie’s Angel Sands series. I dive straight in and feel like I’m catching up with old friends. I absolutely love Angel Sands the way Carrie writes makes it easy to imagine you are right there with them. Just the place I’d love to live or at least visit in the summer. This is book 4 in the series and it tells Caitie’s story who happens to Lucas’ sister who is head over heels about Brecken Lucas’ best friend. A would be relationship fraught with problems will they ever become a couple? You need to read this to find out. It could be read as a stand-alone but why do that and miss out on the three fab reads before this one. I look forward to book 5.
How have I missed this series from Carrie Elks, it is right up my street as I absolutely adore small-town books. Just a Kiss is perfect for the long winter nights coming up and I defy anyone not to fall in love with Breck and Caitie and their story. This book had emotion, sexiness and some real heartfelt moments and I loved it. I seriously think I need to go back and read the rest of the series. A perfect book for Christmas and I could definitely see it as a Hallmark Movie.
I really really wanted to love this one… but I couldn’t for a couple reasons 1 being the way Breck led Rachel on, I don’t think he had ill intentions BUT he knew she liked him . I mean she wasn’t shy about it AT ALL…. But he just kept stringing her along and he never had a discussion with her… 2 Caitie was kind of annoying at times… so yeah on to the next one….
OMG I absolutely loved this book! I read it so quickly. Caitie and Breck were so loveable and they faced real obstacles for them to be together. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and I recommend to anyone as a perfect Christmas read.
This is a great read with an awesome storyline that has well developed and engaging characters that have lots of chemistry. The smooth flow of the storyline makes for a good reading time.
4 Just A Kiss: A Small Town Brother's Best Friend Love Story (Angel Sands Book 4) 4 stars I purchased a copy of the novel Just A Kiss: A Small Town Brother's Best Friend Love Story (Angel Sands Book 4):Brecken and Caitie by Carrie Elks and this review was given freely. Irony, PTSD, a wedding and a steamy opposites attract, best friend's brother, second chance at love romance. Holiday Consultant Caitie is forced to face her fear of water when she reunites with Christmas hating construction business owner Brecken Miller at her brother Lucas' engagement party..
5 Baby I'm Yours: A Small Town Accidental Pregnancy Romance (Angel Sands Book 5) 4 stars I purchased a copy of the novel Baby I'm Yours: A Small Town Accidental Pregnancy Romance (Angel Sands Book 5): Harper and James by Carrie Elks and this review was given freely. An attraction at first sight romance with an unplanned pregnancy, two emotionally scarred characters, and their wonderful supportive group of friends. The sudden loss of her dream job leads Harper back to Angel Sands, her friend Caitie, and a alcohol involved encounter with a stranger who just happens to be a friend of Caitie's family, the grieving widower and orthopedic spine surgeon James Tanner
Brother’s best friends, I’m-not-good-enough-for-you, trauma, a christmas wedding…. I mean, I think I just convinced everyone.
Caitie and Breck are both afraid of some things in life, things that traumatized them. Those phobias are both in the middle of the book, interfering between their love for each other, but they also learn to overcome them. In the end, we get to see only a few times Lucas being overprotective of his sister so this trope is kinda silent in this book !
There’s also a (not) love triangle, with a friend of the group being all over Breck and Him just being polite and not interested in her at all. Which was kinda fun to read about (the jalousy !!!) even though we don’t really get an ending with Rachel. I feel like she will get her book and she’s going to bitch about it !
We also get to see Amber and Lucas’ wedding : the first couple to get a book in this series. They weren’t my favorite couple but it’s always nice to read about them again !
Tropes I remember about this book : 📚 Brother’s Best Friends 📚 Christmas Wedding 📚 Trauma and how to get over them 📚 Small town romance
I love when I find a series that I can just lose myself in. Angel Sands has kind of become a safe harbor for me. Because, no matter what’s going wrong, I know that there’s a happy ever after around the corner. This time we get to see what happens when Caitie takes her childhood crush on her big brother’s best friend, Brecken, out of the realm of teenaged fantasies to give it a spin in real life. I’m very impressed by the way this book portrays the effects of traumatic events. Both Caitie and Brecken are dealing with deep emotional scars that have never healed properly. Their relationship has the ability to bring all the ugliness to the surface, however it might also help provide the answers they’ve both been searching for. This pair manage to be both sweet and angsty together. There’s a little bit of sugar overload, but I also want to smack them both for their inability to communicate with one another. I’ve only just finished this book and already I can’t wait to see what happens next in Angel Sands.
Who's not in love with a good best friend's sister plot? I am sold with this kind of plot! And I'm sold on this book, I mean... this series is just amazing, I can't put into words how extraordinary it is. They are such a cutie-cutie, lovie-dovie couple. The normal "getting to know each other after so long," " the way she turned into a beautiful and amazing woman," and "he grow up to be such and breathtaking man." But always with a little spark of magic. How they help and support each other. They face their fears for each other, and it's so beautiful. I need more 4 books just about them, please. Thank you!
I liked a lot about this book. Brecken and Caitie are opposites in some major ways, and there is the whole brother’s best friend trope, but I really enjoyed the slow burn of our main characters. Both characters have some major trauma in their past that has never been dealt with and causes issues for the couple. Then there is Ember’s, who is Caitie’s soon to be SIL, friend Rachel. At one point in the story I just wanted to pull her aside and tell her to get some self respect. There is clueless and then there is clueless. She became an irritant pretty quickly, otherwise I loved the book.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I just didn't understand how easily they all got along quickly despite not being around one another for a long time (as in the MMC and the FMC's family) and I also felt weird about how the whole Christmas and the MMCs hatred to it didn't cross their minds at all during certain scenarios. Another thing that I wasn't particularly fond of was the way this "second chance" was and the way the kiss that happened long back. This book was a miss for me, unfortunately, but I did like the fact that the MMC remembered stuff about the FMC, like her fears etc., that even her own family wasn't aware of.
I loved this book, loved Caitie and Breck’s story! The beginning was great when he spotted her for the first time in years & she wasn’t his best friend’s little sister anymore. Loved that feeling for him! Caitie had always had a crush on him and carried it with her into her adult life. They were just perfect together. Loved how he supported her fears how she supported his past family heartache. Really loved this one, so far may be my favorite.
I really didn’t care for Rachel and how forward she was towards Breck. I was kind of surprised she was so close to Ember and how Ember, Ally & Brooke supported her obsessive ways with Breck who gave her zero in return.
Brecken and Caitie Brother’s bestfriend Second chance Facing trauma Smalltown
A book about timing for soulmates.
This book gave me lots of feels on different levels. Putting others before yourself, having amazing friends is a beautiful thing, you dont have to overcome fears alone and it is okay to admit your fears to loved ones. And as always, honest communication is key.
Both Brecken and Caitie had beautiful character development, thanks to one another.
Beck has had a rough time at Christmas, Caitlin family has always been a second home for him. They haven't seen each other in 13 years and it is straight fireworks when they do. I can't wait to read Harper's story.
Loved following these two and catching up with other previous residents. Luckily I could sense when I was about to cry so stopped reading (as I was at work on my lunch break) and waited till I got home. Can't wait to read more of the series.
