Billy’s not my baby daddy, but he doesn’t mind pretending to be…
I’m a Division 1 cheerleader with hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster. None of my plans for college include getting knocked up by a cheating ex who just got engaged to another girl.
When my father finds out I’m pregnant, he goes ballistic. That’s when my BFF, bad boy Billy Babcock, comes to my rescue and agrees to “take responsibility.”
Billy and I solidify our contract on a napkin—he’ll pretend to be my baby’s father, and I’ll help him clean up his image. The only problem is my father, the football coach, hates Billy. He warned me off dating players a long time ago, and he thinks Billy’s the biggest player out there.
Now that we’re in a “relationship,” Billy thinks we should spend some quality naked time together, but I’m worried about crossing that line. Because athletic guys with big muscles, intricate tattoos, and sexy smirks are my biggest weakness, and Billy ticks off all those boxes.
Can my football player “boyfriend” walk the straight and narrow for me? Or did I just get handed off from one heartbreaker to another?

Heartbreaker Handoff is an angsty, friends-to-lovers, forbidden romance featuring a sassy cheerleader, who’s about to be a single mother, and a criminally charming football player determined to prove he’s the man for her, one sizzling kiss at a time. Heartbreaker Handoff is a dual POV standalone in the USA Today-bestselling series Varsity Dads.
Lex Martin is the USA Today bestselling author of Varsity Dads, Texas Nights, and the Dearest series. She writes contemporary romance novels, the steamy kind she hopes her readers love but her parents avoid. A former high school English teacher and freelance journalist, she resides in Texas with her husband and twin daughters. Drop her a line. She loves hearing from readers.
This book started off really good, and I really liked Billy despite his whorish past, but after Roxy had the baby Billy had a 180 personality change. He did not make Roxy a priority, he lied to her, hung out with TWO girls he had previously slept with and then made her seem like she was crazy for getting upset about it, he would party while she was at home with the baby, he just was not the same Billy from the beginning of the book. Also when Roxy asked to see his phone, he had to THINK about what was on it.
Him staying at the dinner with his mom and the girl he slept with in high school, knowing it was a date set up by his dad then dancing with her hugging her and giving her his jacket, THEN PROCEEDING TO MOT GO HOME INSTEAD GOING TO THE FOOTBALL PARTY HOUSE AND NEVER TELLING ROXY ANY OF THIS?!?! That put the final nail in his coffin for me, it left such a bad taste in my mouth. I couldn’t forgive him after that. And also it was never explained why he threw the original contract away???? I’m actually upset about how he ended up acting. Another bothersome thing was how, until the very end aka the epilogue, he referred to Marley as “her” baby or “his girlfriend’s” baby. Like when he shows up to class with her and asked who it is he never claims her. The whole point of them being together was so he would claim her and he doesn’t.
I’m sad this book turned out the way it did because I was really enjoying it. I was loving the details the author had been putting in like little touches and funny conversations.
For real though, he was everything. The prince charming that all single, pregnant mom's deserve. He steps up when he doesn't have to and becomes a rock and best friend to Roxy. It was so beautiful to see. Even when he messed up sometimes, he just loved her so well and made her feel so supported through her pregnancy.
Roxy is a tough cookie and I felt so bad for her that the baby daddy that knocked her up is a complete dog. But thank goodness he is because that leaves room for Billy to show he WILL be there. She also has great parents, even if her dad is a bit of a jerk at first. He truly cares about his little girl and gets on board real quick. He keeps Billy on his toes too.
This was a pretty domestic book for being a New Adult type romance. We see a good amount of pregnancy and the struggles of new parents in college and trying to survive all the pressures of life. I love this kind of thing though. There's something so beautiful in watching 2 people become parents. It warms my heart.
I love "not his baby" romances because it shows how biological relations are only as important as we make them. Billy doesn't have to do any of what he does. He liked Roxy, sure, but no one would have blamed him if they just stayed friends. Only, there's no way he's gonna miss this chance. It was beautiful.
Sure there are some insecurities for them both but for a story that was just so smooth up until then, we needed to test them just a bit. To really show they will work things out.
I will say, this did feel a bit too long, but I loved all the characters so much, so it was worth it. I can't wait to read the next couple. A single dad and his nanny, perhaps?
Billy is the playboy in love with his friend, and when she ends up knocked by a cheating ex, he steps up to the plate. AND HE WAS THE CUTEST!!!!!
The conflict of this one was pretty accurate and relatable for couples having a newborn and juggling life, and so the issues they faced as well as the resolution were authentic and relatable.
If you love sports romance, football heroes, and single mom romances (well, kind of), grab this one!
Heartbreaker Handoff was everything I wanted it to be and needed. It was beautiful, hot and sporty.
I love the trope, the whole unexpected pregnancy and the effects on the characters’ lives, it’s lifechanging. Roxy has to change several things and she has her fears, but she will be a great mom. She still has her dreams and hopes, but she keeps her baby in mind and wants the best life for her child. Roxy is kind, feisty, sporty, loyal and caring. I liked the relationship she has with her parents, not always easy, but her parents are there for her and they love her. Roxy will love Billy with everything she has to give.
Billy does something Roxy didn’t expect, but it was so sweet and kind. Something that hasn’t happened to Roxy previously. I love that man. He is sporty, determined, loyal, caring and funny. Billy lives and breathes football, because the dream is to go pro after college. But he makes time for Roxy, and Roxy supports him. He has some great teammates and some of them have become friends. Billy is awesome with Roxy’s baby, he would do anything for the little one.
I’m so happy that there will be more books in this series. I have loved every single one of them. I have rooted for every couple. All of them have put giant smiles on my face and I have felt bad for them. I also really like the friendships between the characters. Loyalty and fun. A great introduction to a future main character, and it’s not any different in this book. I can’t wait to get the whole story of the next main characters and how they end up together.
I liked how Billy and Roxy’s relationship and friendship developed. I was a big fan of the first real non-friend interaction between Roxy and Billy. It was unexpected, but hot. It was a good move for the future. There were of course some doubts, but I understood them because the characters were already described so well. Billy and Roxy really want the relationship to work and they try hard. The ending was natural, understandable. Those epilogues were swoonworthy, beautiful, just everything I need at the end of a book.
Roxy and Billy are the best of friends and maybe at some point could’ve been more, but Billy is wild and has no desire to settle down so to Roxy he will always be her wild best friend.
When Roxy’s world is turned upside down Billy is by her side and a decision that will change who they are to each other is made. Now they need to figure out what’s real, what’s not and if forever is in their future!
I absolutely loved Billy. He has such a beautiful soul. He’s a broken boy just trying to find his way and Roxy becomes his guiding light. They both made each other better and helped each other grow. Billy stepped up so effortlessly and I couldn’t get enough of these two. In the end I love how it all worked out and how everyone rallied around them.
Didn't realize I had already read it, so oops. Not sure why I didn't review.
Anyhoo, the heroine is pregnant by one who is not the hero. This is a trope that falls behind h or H involved with siblings which is usually the grossest (a few exceptions).
However, the H is such a sweetheart with the h and her little plot moppet. Plus extra fun as it's set in Texas, and while I'll probably never live there again, my heart will always be deep in the heart of Texas. I give you Bob Wills, the best of Texas jackasses.
I love this series so much. This is the 5th book in her Varsity Dad series and I knew I was going to love Billy and Roxy’s story. These two had so much chemistry and were so cute together. Billy, Roxy and Marley were so freakin adorable!! I couldn’t put this book down.
Tropes: 🏈Forbidden Romance 🏈Coach’s daughter 🏈Baby isn’t his 🏈Fake dating 🏈He falls first
lex freakin did it again!! the varsity dads series keeps getting better and better <3 i haven’t read every book yet but this is by far my favorite one in the series
roxy and billy >>>> i’ve been so excited for their book & for this story to come out since second down darling! lex did such an amazing job with their storylines and really made them feel like actual people, not just characters in a book. they both deserved all the happiness in the world and i’m glad they found it with each other <33
i CANNOT wait for the next book!! the characters in it are to be 10/10 and i know there’s gonna be so much good drama and i’m just so excited
Best friends who pretend to date because the heroine gets pregnant by someone else? My hot mess radar was going through the roof and I was all for it!! This was going to be messy, sexy, heartwarming with a dash of humor
College cheerleader Roxy never imagined that her entire life would change from one positive pregnancy test. Having to come to terms with her new normal and a cheating ex who's the star quarterback is not going to be easy but lucky for her, she has a Best friend that's going to help her navigate it all. Including fake dating.
Billy has a bit of a reputation on campus and he's trying his best to turn over a new leaf. That includes no longer being a ladies man and trying his best to get drafted in the upcoming season. Football has been his first love and to get to play it on a wider stage, would be the ultimate goal. But there's something else that he's going to love even more and that's going to come with another surprise.
I really liked the premise of this story and I loved the fact that the main characters already had a friendship. I felt their connection and knew that they truly loved each other and it showed. The hero made the story for me because he did everything for the heroine and he went above and beyond for her. I had an issue with Roxy and the way she handled a certain situation and that hindered my enjoyment of the rest of the story. I also felt like there were too many miscommunications and that lead to unnecessary drama.
Aside from that, this was an ok read and I'm actually looking forward to reading the next couples book in the series.
Roxy is about to break her father’s heart. He’s the coach of the football team and expects her to stay away from his players. But unfortunately, life had other plans, and now she’s in danger of becoming the biggest cliche ever. All because a stupid mistake leads to a pregnancy she wasn’t ready for. Now she’s the cheerleader who couldn’t resist the quarterback. Everybody warned her that Ezra was bad news, but she wasn’t counting on him to completely ghost her when she needed to tell him that he’s going to be a father.
Luckily her best friend Billy is at her side. When telling her father about the baby goes terribly wrong, Billy steps in. She’s stunned when he looks her father in the eyes and claims the baby as his. The catch, he’s a football player too. And her dad hates him. As for the rest of the plot, you just have the read and see!
Billy is THAT guy. Everything he did in this book made me swoon and sigh. Even when he was being stubborn, it was the cutest thing. He’s dependable, sweet as heck, and doing everything in his power to make his bestie comfortable. He’s furious with her baby daddy but to everyone’s surprise, he’s more than happy to step up and take his place. Billy may have gone through his own reckless player phase, but the minute Roxy needed him, he put all his shenanigans to a stop. Nothing is more important than showing Roxy how much she matters.
I loved everything about this book. Even when it hit that sweet spot where everything was perfect and there was entirely too much book left for my heart to get out unscathed. As suspected, my heart broke for the characters and was put back together again. My favorite part, the book doesn’t just end when the baby is born. There’s so much more to the story. I really enjoyed to pacing out this book and flew through it in less than a day. I absolutely NEEDED to know what was going to happen, and could not put this book down.
I was most surprised by the set up for the next book. Normally I can get a sense of who the next couple is going to be, but this one threw me for a loop in the best way. And so excited to see where their story goes!
The biggest thank you to Lex Martin and her lovely right hand woman Serena McDonald. This is my first book on her official review team and to say that I cried when I received that news was an understatement. Lex was one of the first authors that I ever reached out to via DM. I just knew that I needed to tell her how good her books were and I screamed when she answered me. But I can’t leave out Give Me Books Promotions for their generosity as well.
I’m honestly not sure what Lex laces her stories with but I’m an addict and I won’t be stopped! Roxy and Billy’s journey is my new favourite from the series.
Billy is sweet perfection and I won’t hear a bad word said about him! He just wants to love and be loved; he’s sweet, sensitive, protective and hilarious. Sure he makes mistakes, everyone does - but he always puts the work in to make it right! He is always in Roxy’s corner, and it made me love him even more.
Roxy is such a strong, beautiful and self-aware woman - her take no shit attitude with her ex was everything! While she wanted to find that love and connection too, she wasn’t willing to sacrifice her happiness or lower her standards!
The chemistry between these two had me hooked - flirty, funny, fierce, all the best things coupled with their comfortability to be in their own skin around each other! It’s been a while since I’ve read a book where I got butterflies right alongside the characters. As much as I appreciated the bonus epilogue - it’ll never be enough of these two!
I can’t even begin to explain how much I loved this book; or more accurately this series! This book has just taken the top spot as my favorite of this series. Billy is my favorite of all the Varsity Dads. I loved his fun loving spirit in the previous book and I just knew when he fell in love he’d be amazing! He’s always been the playboy out for a good time, but when Roxy gets pregnant by a cheating ex Billy steps up, and OH MY GOD y'all he's swoony as hell! He and Roxy are perfect together. I loved their chemistry and how they made each other better. This book has everything I love: Friends to lovers, fake dating that leads to something real, a swoony AF footballer, teammates and friends that support each other, and a perfect balance of emotional and steamy moments. Lex knocked it outta the park with this one, and I’m so excited for what’s coming next!
Roxy the football coaches daughter finds out shes pregnant by her cheating ex, her dads no1 quarterback. When he decides he wants nothing to do with her or her baby Billy another football player takes responsibility for Roxy and her baby. Billy has had a thing for Roxy for a while and is such a supportive fake boyfriend to her. Finally falling in love these two go through so much together, fighting for their love and family when they have so many obstacles to get through but who doesn't love a happy ending.
This is a friends to lovers , collage football romance and i really loved it, the whole story had me hooked and i would recommend to everyone.
This book was so good! I loved the angst, the banter, and spice. Roxy and Billy have been friends for a while. She gets pregnant by one of his teammates who doesn't want to be involved, so Billy steps up. And omg, does he ever!? He is so sweet and protective of Roxy. He agrees to fake date her then, things change, and they realize they can't ignore their feelings for each other. They both have a lot on their plates, but they don't give up. Oh, and Roxy's dad? He's Billy's Coach. I loved Billy and Roxy's HEA. This is my second book by this author, and I devoured it. She's a new favorite author now!
Roxy is pregnant, but it’s not her new (fake) boyfriends…the baby daddy is a jerk and wants nothing to do with Roxy or the baby. Billy has always had feelings for Roxy and when Roxy’s dad (his coach) mistakes him for being the dad…he just goes with it. Roxy and Billy are thrust together even more, when Roxy’s parents have them move in together. Roxy is nervous because Billy has been a party playboy for the past 3 years, and even if she wants him, she comes with a lot of baggage. Billy is not afraid of a challenge, or baggage, to get what he wants. And he wants Roxy and her baby. You can definitly tell that Billy is still maturing and growing, because he doesn’t always make the best decisions. He never does anything outright to hurt Roxy but he doesn’t always use his head. Roxy also forget that Billy isn’t her Ex, and sometimes gets lost in her emotions and new baby feels. There was definitely a lot of lack of communication and hurt feelings that could have been avoided. There are a lot of ups and downs to being a new parent, and even more when you’re in college trying to balance life and school. My favorite part of this story was how realistic it was. The characters didn’t sugarcoat their relationship issues and not everything was seen with rose colored glasses. Life became very hard for Roxy and Billy when Marley arrived and real life issues and insecurities presented themselves.
This is probably my new favorite in this series, just based on how realistic it was. Also how sweet Billy was (when he wasn’t super frustrating). I’ve read it once and I am reading this story again. I loved it.
I am so in LOVE with this book! Lex, you get me every time. Billy and Roxy were downright entertaining and loveable. When I first met Billy and Roxy in Second Down Darling, I thought their friendship was beautiful and they were so fun together. And then Billy goes above and beyond by standing by Roxy’s side through her pregnancy journey, when he’s not the father. Be still my heart.
Biily! HE. IS. THE. MAN! I was swooning left and right, and he could do no wrong. Everything he did in this book had me melting into a puddle. I loved the way he stepped up for Roxy when he didn’t have to and just the way he supported her and took crap from her dad (his football coach) and didn’t back down. He is without a doubt a top tier, swoony hero.
Roxy was one tough cookie, and I loved her sass and how independent she was. I admired her dedication to continue her studies and not let the pregnancy impede her goals. I LOVED how open she was with her sexuality and gave Billy as good as she got.
Billy and Roxy together were FIRE! These two did not let the pregnancy get in the way of their sexy times and uuuufff they were so spicy together. They had no sexual innuendo down pat, and I was laughing out loud throughout the book. Billy was too charming for his own good, but you couldn’t help but love him for it.
Hearbreaker Handoff was such an emotional, swoony, spicy story. I’m so in love with Roxy and Billy. Their romance was not without obstacles, and it had me in all my feels. I can’t wait for the next book and get to know Mr. QB Nick Silva.
After finishing Second Down Darling, I was super excited for Billy and Roxy's story, as I just knew they would be special. And I was right...this story was incredible and I absolutely LOVED these two together! They were so much fun to read about. The fact that Billy and Roxy had a solid friendship with some friendly flirting before their relationship took a turn, it made the bond between them so much better. Yes, they had some communication issues - but I found the conflict with them at the end to be truly relatable and how people their age would be. And it wasn't just one of them acting crazy. Both of them were having trouble balancing life with a newborn, and a new relationship, as well as managing school and all their other commitments.
Another one of my favorite parts of the story has to be the change in Coach. I knew deep down he wasn't a complete jerk, and by the end of the story...the relationship he had with Billy was so heartwarming to see.
I said before that Olly and Maggie were my favorites, but Billy and Roxy have jumped right up there to claim the top spot. This story is just that wonderful and one that is a must-read! Looking forward to what's next in this series!
Heartbreaker Handoff was absolute PERFECTION, and I LOVED Billy and Roxy’s angsty, friends-to-lovers, forbidden romance with all of my heart!
Lex Martin, as always, did an absolutely exceptional job all around. The storyline and characters, the humor and banter and camaraderie, the steamy scenes and emotional moments and swoon-worthy romance, the epilogues and bonus scenes—everything was perfect from beginning to end, and I couldn’t have loved it more or been happier. The epilogues and bonus scenes were especially perfect and made me ecstatic. They were by far one of the best and my favorite conclusions EVER. So, so freaking good.
Lex Martin’s sports romances are absolute MUST READS, and Heartbreaker Handoff is hands down my favorite standalone in the Varsity Dads series so far, though I dearly love them all. Billy and Roxy’s incredibly special story is not to be missed, and I am so excited to see what this talented author has in store next!
When reviewers say a book is “a rollercoaster of emotions,” I often question the authenticity of that statement, but 5% into Lex Martin’s latest, Book 5, “Heartbreaker Handoff,” I was already fuming. There goes my emotions lifting for takeoff! Yes, it was that kind of story for me.
” Heartbreaker Handoff” is centered around pregnancy/fake dating––stay with me. Roxy, a college senior and the football coach’s daughter becomes pregnant with one of the players. However, the player wants nothing to do with her or the baby. Roxy’s friend Billy, who has always had a thing for Roxy and is a fellow football player, steps up to claim the baby to protect Roxy from her father’s reactions and provide support. In doing so, they fall in love, but not without complications. And, oh dear, the complications were bumpy. I got so angry that my heart raced, and then I cried. See, emotional rollercoaster right here.
I look forward to the next book. But in the meantime, I’m going to start from the beginning with book 1.
I've been so excited for these two to finally get together, and this book was just everything I needed from them.
Billy having the biggest crush on his best friend, who is also the Coach's daughter was the forbidden aspect I needed especially as him and Coach don't see eye to eye.
I adored Roxy. She took her unexpected pregnancy in her stride and handled it like a boss. She didn't have an easy time, but Billy was definitely her knight in shining armour.
These two had some seriously hot chemistry, and I knew that taking it slow wouldn't last long.
Their love story isn't without complications and drama, but it was a seriously addictive read that I became also permanently attached to my kindle.
If you love Lex Martin's previous books and adore a pregnancy/single Mum romance, then you need this book in your life.
In the last story we learned that Roxy was pregnant, we kinda saw that coming since Ezra was such a douchebag. Billy and Roxy have a best friends relationship and haven't taken it further but the feelings are there for both. Billy steps in when Roxy needs him the most and claims to be the father of her baby, which gets the ball rolling in a direction that could change his life and cost him the draft OR it could be the best thing to ever happen.
I am loving this world that Lex Martin has created and to say I'm stoked that there is another story already cooking is an understatement. I could not get enough of Billy and Roxy! The two of them gave us great drama, and chemistry that was so hot my glasses fogged. I give them 5 stars.
I love these two! Their friendship is so fun & sweet. As they decide to move forward with a more-than-platonic relationship, the sweet turns up the heat & they're pretty spicy as a couple. 🌶🔥🌶🔥🌶🔥
They show a united front as they navigate through Roxy's pregnancy, and I love the way they stick up for each other. Billy is so adorable with his biscuit & bean! 😁
There were some bumps in the road & communication struggles that felt very real as they navigated new parenthood together. The relationships with family & friends, juggling a baby & classes & football... all were written so well!
This is one of my favorite series & I'm excited for more!
Absolutely loved this book. I actually didn't start the series at the beginning but the one before this one so I was excited for this, I loved Billy and this book really showed how much of a great man he is.
The realism of what it's like after having a baby and even the struggles of a relationship was on point and the how Roxi felt about herself after pregnancy hit close to home. It's great to read something so realistic and relatable. I'm so happy with this book and how it turned out. Can't wait for what I become is nick and Abigail's story ahhh
This is hands down my favourite book of the Varsity dads series. Billy totally won me over, he is the perfect book boyfriend.
Roxy is a cheerleader for the Lone Star football team, or at least she was. Her dreams change when she finds out she’s pregnant by her cheating ex…. Who has just got engaged to another girl!
Billy supported Roxy from the moment he found out she’s pregnant and it’s not even his baby. When Roxy tell’s her dad (the team’s coach) that she’s pregnant he kinda flips out and demands to know who the father is. Billy can’t stand seeing his coach yelling at his BFF and he steps up to “take responsibility”.
I loved the friendship between these two and to see how Billy was there for Roxy but they definitely don’t have an easy go of it.
Billy Babcock will have you swooning all the way through this book.
Lex Martin wrote an amzing friends to lovers romance that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and swooning so hard througout the whole book! I certainly could not put the book down at all!
I felt so much for and with both characters. I just had to continue reading even when it was hurting my heart alot.
Billy and Rox have a fantastic story. Their friends but Billy has always had something more for Roxy so when Roxy ends up pregnant from her "ex boyfriend" he's the first to step up and pretend the baby is his. Even when it means pissing off his football coach who also is Roxys father.
Seriously, can these varsity dads get any better?!? Every single book in this series outdoes the last one and I can't get enough! I really didn't think it would get better than the Rider, and then Ben, and oh Ollie, and lastly Jake. But boy, oh boy, Billy Babcock!
I adored Sienna when she made appearances in the last 4 books and was so happy to get her story. While I also enjoyed Billy's antics, I was a little worried about how he would step up. Man, did he step up! I loved the way he protected Sienna and her bean!
This story gave me all the feels! I loved how much humor was in it, even during the steamy times. And those steamy times - wowza! Billy & Sienna's chemistry was off the charts and there were some super hot times! I cannot wait for Abigail and Nick's book!
How could I not love Heartbreaker Handoff? It's part of Lex Martin's Varsity Dads series but with a twist....Billy isn't the father.
Oh Billy how I loved thee!! He's a player with a bad rep. who is besties with the coaches daughter. He's the guy who stands up to the coach who is not a fan, to defend his bestie Roxy, the coaches daughter.
Gah! I loved these two together. Their chemistry, the witty banter and just the way they navigate through their new journey in life made this a really enjoyable read!!
This was the *one* I was waiting for! Billy and Roxie finally got their story and it was amazing! Love all of the banter, the spice, and the tropes! Amazing !
Roxy and Billy are friends and he's the only person who knows Roxy is pregnant. Billy has liked Roxy for a while and has asked her out numerous times. When she decides to tell the actual father of her child about the pregnancy, she walks into his engagement party. Going home, she shares the story with Billy. Billy has a few issues of his own to overcome and has been told by a sports agent that he needs to clean up his party image. When everyone mistakenly thinks Billy is the father, they decide to let people think it's true, especially Roxy's father who happens to be the coach of the football team! When they become closer and the lines start to blur, can they become a family or will the real father step up? Will Coach stop Billy's dreams of the NFL? This was such a great book, the couple have great chemistry, it's full of comedy and the other characters are just waiting to get their story told. Can't wait for the next book!
