Summer Reading Book
By Dom Tiberii

The Hobbit is a fantasy fiction thriller by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien made on September 21, 1937. This novel takes place in Middle Earth in a town called Hobbiton from 2941-2942, which is set in the third age before the events of The Lord of The Rings. There are a lot of characters in this book, however, the important characters are Bilbo Baggings, Thorin Oakenshield, Smaug, and Gandalf. Bilbo Baggins the main character was just a simple regular hobbit who didn’t do much with themselves besides maintaining their own belongings. Such as keeping the garden, writing stories, and hosting parties. Thorin Oakenshield is the leader of the dwarves, who are on a quest to take back Erebor Mountain from the dragon Smaug. Gandalf is a wise wizard who chooses Bilbo to come along on the quest he saw something in Bilbo, that Bilbo did not even see in himself. Lastly, Smaug is a greedy dragon who loves the lonely mountain because of its gold resources. Inside the mountain is filled with gold which turns anyone who rules greedy and keeps it to themselves.
An overall summary of the book is the 12 dwarves led by Thorin are on a quest to take back the Erebor Mountain which they originate from. Another reason is all the gold that dragon Smaug is keeping for his own, righteously belongs to the Dwarves. Dwarves made all the gold and forced all the weapons in previous years. Thorin's father ruled over Erebor however he got cursed with greed and wanted everything for himself. That is when Smaug attacked Erebor and took it over, this was the cause of the curse of being greedy. Gandalf the wizard picked up Bilbo who didn’t want to go on the quest at first, but by the end of the book he ended up being the hero. There was an all-out battle between the dwarves and Smaug for control over the mountain. The theme of this book is overall bravery, The reason I say this is because time and time again the book shows how bravery and courage are super important. I really enjoyed reading this book because it made me feel in the story I almost felt as if I was a part of the quest to take back the mountain.

3.5 Rating. As a visual aid, did a good job. The descriptions were good but would have liked more photos in the book. As a big fan of the LoTR movies, will look for similar books on these movies.

The must-have, comprehensive guide to go with the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey film

This official companion to the film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” offers one an unforgettable illustrated glimpse into the fascinating peoples and places of Middle-Earth, as seen on the big screen. Author Jude Fisher is also creator of the film guides for the Lord of the Rings (the fellowship of the ring, the two towers and the return of the king), which enhance the movie experience by taking you to the heart of Peter Jackson’s creation. Join the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Wizard and the company of Dwarves on their quest to recover treasure stolen by Smaug the Dragon. Leaving the comfort of Bilbo’s home they must face many perils before they can claim their long-lost gold – Trolls, Elves, Goblins, Wargs and worse…like the white Orc.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey visual companion offers readers extensive information and exclusive insights into the world of Bilbo and his friends including:
* How the members of the company of Thorin Oakenshield are related, and who has greatest reason to hate the Orcs
* Whether the Elves of Rivendell, and their Lord Elrond, will provide safe harbor to the Dwarves in their time of need
* Why the Goblins of the Misty Mountains have become hideously deformed, and who is the monstrous King that rules over them
*Who is the eccentric Wizard Radagast and what dark peril has he discovered in the forest of Mirkwood?
* Plus, a brand new map from the film charting the journey of the company from the Shire to Wilderland.

This richly illustrated, hardback volume with more than 100 full-color photographs from the film begins the quest for the Lonely Mountain in spectacular style. Despite feeling passionately that this book is a brilliant read and an essential purchase, I do feel that it is somewhat overpriced for the size of the book and contents. (Priced at an expensive £12.99 UK for a slim 79 page book). The writing is informative and illuminating, adding to one’s personal experience with the fantastic film and also JRR Tolkien’s novel. This together with such stunning photographs makes this a real treat and something which all Hobbit and Tolkien fans alike will love to have on their bookshelves, and is a great edition to any collection. I have rated this 4.5 stars only because of the cost – as I purchased my own copy secondhand.

If this had been my only source of information pre-film I'd be surprisingly optimistic about it's upcoming release. As it isn't, I'm much more dubious and prepared to not like the changes that have been made. The Movie Storybook is the one that you want to prepare yourself for the film disappointments and, as I understand it, the Official Movie Guide (although I've decided not to read that one until after the film is out).

However, the book is a lovely hardback; the pictures are well chosen and haven't been overly photoshopped like in the three books for children. The text is well written, and gives you information to enhance your viewing of the film without actually spoiling anything. Which is why it reads like 'gosh, they've really paid attention to the book (and the 'Of Dwarves' section in the LotR appendices) and created interesting characters from the little information we're given about them - good job' and lulls you in to feeling this could be a good adaptation. It remains to be seen, of course, but I'm going in with a healthy dose of suspicion.

In comparison to the LotR Visual Companions that Jude Fisher also did, this one is slightly smaller in physical size but has more pages. The RotK Visual Companion (because that's the one I've got on hand to compare with) had much more text, and read more like a story guide whereas this one reads much more like a 'set the scene and meet the characters' book. I believe, however, that's how the FotR Visual Companion read too (it definitely had a fold out map, like this one does too) so it may be that the volumes for the next two films will be more storybook like than this one. We shall see.

If you're a fan of the LotR films and are looking forward to the Hobbit films too, then get it by all means - you'll love it (and rate it 4 or 5 stars). Me, I'm overly invested in these films which I'm sure I will end up not liking, yet I just can't help compulsively buying this stuff (and can't quite bring myself to give this 4 stars).

Stunning imagery but slightly marred by quite a number of poor quality movie stills on double-page spreads. Still enjoyed the visual details of character and set designs, and the foldout map of north Middle-Earth is fantastic!

Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old

In the novel, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, the main protagonist is Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who is brought into a journey by a wizard named Gandalf and many dwarves. The setting begins at a place called The Shire, an exclusive area settled by hobbits where Bilbo also lives. As the novel goes on the setting is taken to the lonely mountain, where it is guarded by the feared dragon, Smaug. The main conflict in the novel is to regain possession of the lonely mountain from Smaug. The main theme that is shown in the novel is how Bilbo was able to grow through his selflessness and bravery. As they finally regain control of the mountain there is a major difference in the mindset of Bilbo from the beginning to the end. Personally I would recommend this novel, I loved the adventurous and fiction aspect of the novel.

Bilbo, a hobbit was asked to go on a journey with many dwarfs. During there journey, they would have to go through the forest and fight off other species. The goal of the journey is to reclaim Lonley mountain away from Smaug. The theme of the novel you do not have to be blood to be family. I personally liked the book, because it had a journey and things were unexpected which made fun for me to read.

Baggies is used to live within a life that is comfortable and has nothing to worried about anything. But one day a bunch of drwarves and a wizard came into his house and on the next day, they went on a adventure. He is not a adventurous hobbit before, he live comfortably, but surprisingly he’ve show that he is really useful in their journey, maybe he is born to be a adventurous hobbit.

Another stocking filler bought for the Christmas when the movie was released a good decade ago now. Although it’s nicely produced, it’s very light fare. I don’t think I’ve ever read it cover to cover, so the score reflects the simple enjoyment of the read and the small likelihood of me ever reading it again.

I really enjoyed it it! With the dwarfs and elves and all the magical creatures. When I read the book, I imagined I was the main character, instead of Bilbo. Bilbo was still there, just I was the main character.

For a hide-hard Hobbit fan such as myself, this book contained little information that was beyond the scope of my already vast knowledge. Still, it was a fairly entertaining read.
