The tales of the Rift ‘gobbling girls whole on their wedding day if they were unworthy’ were told as children’s stories to frighten the fawn into submission. At least, that’s what Ace had believed. It was on her wedding day that these stories were proven to be true as the Rift opened and creatures came through.
When her younger sister is taken by the creatures, Ace puts her fear at the back of her mind and crosses the Rift to save her family. The rabbit hole of insanity that she falls down after crossing it was not something she was prepared for.
Ace is forced to come face to face with the possibility that saving her sister might be more complicated than she realizes. Will she be able to find who she truly is in this wonderland? Or will the madness consume her like it has everyone else?
Loved the world building of this one! Beautiful artwork inside, a vivid world that really sucks you in and strong characters that make you keep rooting for them! Great stuff. Loved it.
I can see some sort of inspiration by Alice in worderland and mabye a little less confessed harry potter...
But it did not give the right vibe for like retelling of alice in wonderland, the vibe was more like: lts start w/cottagecore sunny big family house where people don't judge you and adopt you and you just live happily, oh well no too boring what other ppl usually do when this happens? Oh yea lets darken it muahahaah!!! No more singing birds aaaahahaaa
Literally this vibe should be judged forget abt jojo siwa (uo: karma is not that bad song let her live)
Though the vibe was debatable I think the smut was quite fine and I see here some sort of chemistry which is not usual in books i read...
But another stone of fracture was like character development out of nowhere, this is one of the most common things that i hateee
Plus points for the gorgeous pictures and named chapters♡♡♡♡
May Contain Spoilers depending on the type of person you are! Talk about BB for the first HALF of this amazing book!! But can we also give a hand to Miss Lorna at what a WILD freaking ride this book was? I mean, I LOVED this take on AIW. It had me at the edge of my seat. The ending is about to catch these hands with how abruptly it ended, and now I will just be sitting here twiddling my thumbs not so patiently for the next book! I can wait to see character art and everything else Lorna decides to do with this storyline, and I will be in the front of the line waiting to get my hands all over it!
So I got this book as ARC & I have to say love love the storyline. I also fall in love with the characters! Especially cecila because she reminds of me. She is such a great caretaker. Not going to give to much away. If you like returning & fea also fantasy! I suggest this book but also check your triggers too. ♠️
This was a great read. It was a steampunk retelling of Alice in wonderland but very much had its own independent story. The characters are fun and vibrant. There’s plenty of magic and spice. It’s very high stakes and you get invested in the characters journey quickly.
ADHD friendliness: 3/5. It’s in the middle for me, I struggle with fantasy world building in general and felt like a notation tabs helped a lot. She’s created a very vibrant fun world so it’s easy to be invested in and interested in but as with any new world there’s a lot of new terms and words and rules, so if you’re an adhd reader I’d grab your tabs and use them primarily for world building aspects. The rest falls into place pretty easily.
Shooketh factor: 3/5 fairly shooketh. It was def a high stakes book toward the end. You’re long invested in the characters journey and things get tense.
Spice: 3/5 it was a unique spice as there are fawns but you don’t really pay too much attention to that. Lol it was well written and fun.
Plot: 4/5 fun plot. I can see it being an easy 5/5 for anyone. I breezed thru the first part of the book and got a little slower at the end which (and I can’t stress this enough) is not an issue with the book, it’s an issue with my preference as a reader. I usually don’t do great when the heroin has to do “trials” or “games” so that’s definitely a ME thing, but as far as those go it was very good compared to other games/trial books. I had a worse reaction to goblet of fire when Harry had 3 games, or ACOTAR when Ferrah had 3 trials. It’s a weird me thing. If that’s never given you pause then please disregard this part of the review. Lol
Characters: 5/5 had great depth
Vibe is very magical sparkly,
Would recommend to anyone who wants a fairy tail spice with action and magic and a unique world,
I received an ARC for A Throne of Serpents and Roses.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. To me, it was a mix of Alice in Wonderland and A Court of Thrones and Roses. My favorite characters were the twins, i loved them throughoutthe whole book. Again, i did enjoy the book, but I do have mixed feelings about it. One of them being I don't understand the title. For me, it didn't fit the book, and im still trying to figure out how it fits. Second, I like the world building, and I don't. I feel like if you knew about Alice in Wonderland and Fae court type systems, you could get by, but there just wasn't enough to make this its own world, I just felt it was lacking in that part. The character development was well written for Aniera"Ace", I really grew to love her development but kind of disappointed by her decision in the end. Ace and Kain had a great slow burn relationship that grew into you finding out that they are mates. I read a lot of "mates" based romances and for you to be someone's mate to just give it up like that with hardly any emotion cause I honestly didn't get any emotion in the ending. I understand she wants to go back home to hopefully "remember" that she needs to save her people, but even remembering isn't guaranteed. How could you give up your mate on a whim? When you read about a mated fantasy relationship, these are like die for each other kind of relationships. I got that from Kain's side, but not teally anything from Ace. As I said before, I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book, and I hope there are plans for book 2 that work out what happens in the ending of book 1.

Spice Meter: 4/5 - Spicy but not too graphic Rating 5/5 - Alice in Wonderland meets the Fae World Expected Release Date: July 26, 2023 TW: At the end of the review
This story follows Aneira, a fawn who lives in the human world. Just as she is about to give her life to a cruel man who she does not love, a break in the rift between worlds sends her on a journey ‘down the rabbit hole’ into a new world and a new understanding of who she is.
Enter Kain, the beautiful, strong, and silent warrior who has been charged to train and protect Aneira, or his ‘little witch’ as he calls her. Together they start to forge a new and perilous journey.
I absolutely loved this book. I haven’t read a book that kept me on my toes, that had me rooting for two people to come together, and that had me laughing at the amazing writing and banter between characters, since Fourth Wing.
This story has magic systems, world-building, battles, and strategies as well as some spice without being overly graphic. It really has it all. I will be preordering this book – as it is a must-have for my personal collection.
I hope the author continues the story of Aneira, Kain, and the two worlds that they are a part of as I look forward to what happens next.
Thank you to the author for allowing me the privilege of reading and reviewing your book!
This is an interesting mix of themes - steampunk/clockwork, romance, fantasy, fae, and Alice in Wonderland. I was intrigued by the use of fawns as characters since they are not a popular main character type in a lot of fae romances. I wish there was more about fawns in the book, especially when describing the fawn characters. This does have a lot of Alice in Wonderland vibes, but overall it reminded me more of a steampunk Labyrinth with the changing sceneries.
The culture of the human world is very misogynistic with fawns basically being slaves to be sold for breeding or to die if they don't conform. The premise of the world is dark so the reader needs to be prepared as it affects the MFC's world perspective and sense of self.
Across the rift, gender roles and views of fawns are different but skewed because of the reign of the Red King. There is a dystopian feel to the world as metal and gears have replaced many aspects of nature. The MFC finds herself not only having to confront this strange environment but the truth about fawns and the power they hold or could hold.
The book ends on gentle cliffhanger. Hopefully there is another book!
The book does need to include trigger warnings: forced marriage, torture, imprisonment, talk of beheadings, implied SA of secondary characters
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This copy did have typos but it should be going through further edits before release and they didn't cause major issues reading.
Think Alice in wonderland meets hunger games and the fae world! This was absolutely great and I hope to see a sequel. The twists and turns had me on my seat the whole entire book! Ace character building up and finding out more about her family was good. The twins are definitely a favorite and I’d love to know more about them and their adventures! The way she described the settings, the lands and tunnels sent my imagination soaring picturing it in my mind. The library was my absolute favorite and I wish I could see it for myself I’d be in heaven. The games had twists and turns that I didn’t imagine were going to happen and it made it so worth it. The last game was great, and I love how it ended! I can just imagine when they finally made it to the clockwork castle. Just picturing the busy bustling market and all the cool treasures ace had seen. Kain is our little dark mysterious man who is actually sweet on ace. Ace and Kains build up to their relationship was perfect not rushed just at its own pace. To find out that they were mates but she still went back in the end kinda upset me. I figured she would stay because in similar books when you find your mate you can’t leave them. BUT I feel like her leaving also builds up for a another amazing story in book two hopefully! But I totally understand why she goes back because they were basically just sold off and I hope she remembers and breaks the cycle. The book art was a nice touch! Gives a little more look at our characters
This novel is full of Alice in Wonderland vibes. If you love a good fairytale retelling, then this book is for you!
In this book, we follow Ace (Aneira), whose world is turned upside down on the day of the wedding for her arranged marriage. The person she was closest to is threatened and kidnapped, leaving Ace to face the dangerous unknown full of monsters when she crosses the rift. She is forced to work with an insufferable male to save her sister, but will she survive long enough to save her, face the Red King, keep her wits, and learn the truths of the past?
Ace is a strong FMC who takes the risk of crossing the rift and working with Kain even if it means sacrificing herself for her sister. Kain is a strong and stubborn male who has grown up within the rift but also has had to make sacrifices to survive. The world building is more complex with the different species/types of people and monsters, the magic, and the secrets hidden in the history between both sides of the rift. The banter and steamy moments kept me turning the page. I needed to know and understand all the little hints and secrets that were revealed. I can't wait to read the next book to find more to the puzzle but also see how the characters continue after the mysterious cliffhanger.
A Throne of Serpents and Roses is a Alice in Wonderland retelling set in a magical world of Faye and follows Aneira also known as Ace, in her journey of rescuing her sister and grasping to find herself in the process.
On her arranged wedding day, monsters from across the rift come through the portal and kidnap her sister in efforts to rescue her; she follows them across the rift where she falls down into a new world. Then she encounters Kain, a shifter in charge of training her to fight off the Red King who has taken her sister prisoner and in order to safe her she must win the Deck games. Will she save her sister?
I tríele enjoyed reading this book and it’s twisted on the themes from Alice and wonderland. I loved the slow burn between Kain and Ace, it was steamy without it being too much . There is plenty of world build and foreshadowing with history and prophecies on who Ace is. The story ends on a cliffhanger and I wish it gave us a bit more.
Trigger warnings
Forced marriage Violence Death Sexual Assault
Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC copy and giving my honest review
This book had an interesting spin on Alice In wonderland meets the fae realm and I’m here for it ! The world building was great . I do wish there was more detail about the fawn and what their powers are . The fact that this book is basically about the “lesser” fae standing up for them selves is pretty cool and I’m excited to see where it goes from here .
Ace is our fmc who finds herself racing through the rift on her wedding day to save her sisters . It seems the world on the other side of the rift is very different then her own . In order to save her sisters from the red king she must train with Kain to become a stronger fawn capable of winning his deadly games .
I absolutely loved the chemistry between our two main characters. However I wish there was more leading up to them actually realizing they liked each other . Just more moments to show readers how they came to have these feelings .
The side characters were funny and loveable (honestly I hope to get more of the twins in the future)
Alice in Wonderland meets the Hunger Games. This was such an amazing book to read. You have this magical world, filled with magic systems and evil royalty, A Fawn who has crossed over and learned she has no choice but bend to a storyline that she never planned for herself, shifters and fae, with curses and deadly games. Kain is a very great character with his swoon worthy lines and strength. Ace can come across a bit annoying with her resistance to open up, but her character growth was amazing and I can not wait to see where this story goes in the next book, if there is one, but that ending does bode well for epicness to come. The spice was amazing and had me giggling with glee when it came up.
Going in I knew this was a fantasy, but had no idea it was so closely related to an Alice in Wonderland re-telling which threw me off a bit. Once I got going into the story it was an interesting take with the fawn as the main character. It was definitely a slow burn type of story, and I was a bit let down by the end as it felt a bit rushed, and left a good opening for a continuation. I do hope there is more and this will be a series as the premise is definitely interesting. I enjoyed the overall story, but it was just a bit too slow for me personally so if there are more books to come I hope there is more action and things to really draw you into the story from the start.
I thought this was an interesting Alice in Wonderland retelling. I really liked the different fae represented, it had enough world building for the plot, and true to Alice’s story, scenes that bewilder you. We follow the story of a fawn forced to marry a duke, during the wedding havoc occurs resulting in her falling down a rift and finding herself in a new place. She begins to meet the locals and finding a destiny she never knew was laid before her. Training sequences, low heat spice, fated mates, arranged marriage themes/tropes.
You take fairies, shifters, fawn, and throw them into the tale of Wonderland. Paint a beautifully tarnished world for the adventure. Cheering for our heroine as she becomes so much more than what she was taught. Falling in love with Kain while she does. Finding a family that loves her unconditionally as we do. And given a choice of fulfilling the prophecy, putting her own happiness to the side, or maybe grasping what she wants with both hands and not letting go. Only to leave us like this? Now I know that there is more to the story, but come on!
I really love this book. I’m not exactly sure what to say about it as I absolutely loved a lot of the small details. I need the next book. This is going to live rent free in my head till I know what happens next. It doesn’t exactly end on a major cliff hanger, I mean it could be worse, but it was enough of a cliff hanger that I’m going to be keeping my eyes close for any new updates for book number 2.
Ugh, why do these damn fantasy always start w/a stupid wedding?
God, this is so boring & extremely predictable. It's like the author, for bateman, took the beginners fantasy guide & wrote whatever the hell this is.
Marriage, saving sister, stuck w/dude, finds out has hidden powers, "aghast" over it, tries too hard to be humble & downplay it, train & become oh so powerful. Reads more like an over zealous annoying ya than anything. Nothing original whatsoever
“Mijn Ziel” 😍 this book was soo good! I loved all the different shifters and fae. The different lands in the kingdom were amazing. I loved Ace trying to find herself and come into her magic. The cliffhanger at the end had me telling my book no no no 😂 so excited to see what happens in the next book because I need more Kain and his little witch 😂🫶🏻 the Alice in wonderland vibes mixed with some hunger games in it really brought the story together!
My heart always is full with new alice in wonderland meets fae book. Lorna has done such a magnificent job with the worldbuilding and character building. Ace is such a fun character that I loved going with her on her adventures and dealing with the games she has to go through.
While it ended on such a cliffhanger, I personally NEED the next book
Reminds me alot of Alice and wonderland. Loved the story and the characters. The fact that there was art sprinkled in was great. I loved being able to see the illustrations. Everything happened really fast in the beginning, but before I knew it, the story was over! I need to know more !

Ace on her wedding day goes through the Rift to save her sister Nyra, she must learn how to use her magic that fawn (faun?) did not even know they have and fight. Kain reluctantly agrees to help her train, will she make it or not?
This Wonderland retelling sucked me in. Ace was brave but faulted it was nice to see. While there was insta attraction I appreciated that the burn was slower. Battles and journey awaits on the other side of the rift.
I loved this take on Alice in wonderland!! This author's ability to manipulate the classic and turn into something fantastical in a whole new way kept me guessing and needing more!!
There’s a good story in here but it’s buried under a mountain of tell, not show. The overly descriptive nature of the writing felt like wading through molasses! It’s a pity as it has all the events, the execution just felt lacking.
At no point did I feel the tension that I was supposed to feel and large story points that should felt weighty were just dropped into conversation, for example, the FMC being related to the family that took her in, I mean… what?
I got this as an ARC. I want to thank the author for allowing me to read this. It was such a great read. I also want to thank the publisher for their hard work. This review is voluntary, and I very much enjoyed this read.
This, to me, was a retelling of Alice in Wonderland with twists and turns. There's magic, shapeshifters, elves, and so many other beings put into this book.of course, not so many it gets confusing. There is so much detail and so much emotion. You will be rooting for the FMC the entire way throughout the book.
The chemistry between Kain and His little Witch is absolutely on point. The sarcasm between them is hilarious. The banter is even better. You want more than anything for the two of them to be together. Do they? I won't spoil it.
Magic, battles, and the fighting are strong in this book. I especially enjoyed the lore you learned in it. This is a book. I hope more comes from it. I hope to read more about this.
You know when you just have to sit and process what you just read because the book was that good. This, this is one of those books. I could not put this book down. I loved it!
This book gave me Alice in Wonderland/Hunger Games vibes; definitely a found family and a slow burn!
There better be another book because I’m definitely not done with it!
Thank you so much for sending me this arc in exchange for my honest review! I cannot wait to read the next books!
