The Lady Lies

Rate this book
A LADY IN DISGUISE, AN IMPOVERISHED EARL, A DESPICABLE GUARDIAN…WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Lady Amelia Davenport is accustomed to bending the truth to hold onto her independence, therefore, when she bumps into the new Earl of Silchester, who is far too handsome and arrogant for his own good, she considers it perfectly natural to be economical with the truth. Unfortunately, her lies have a habit of growing. . .

The unexpected return of her guardian from abroad upends her hopes and dreams. Faced with the unpalatable prospect of losing both fortune and reputation, she discovers her heart has become as entangled as her lies, and turns in desperation to the Earl for help.

Edward, Earl of Silchester, has been deceived by her lies once too often. Threatened with bankruptcy, blackmail and heartache, not to mention family pressures to secure a wealthy bride as quickly as possible, he has no time for a deceitful minx who tries to trap him into marriage. Or so he tells himself.

When Amelia finds herself in mortal danger, Edward realises only he can rescue them both, but with time running out, can he overcome his mistrust before it’s too late?

Amelia is a young, naive and forthright young lady who takes to dressing as a village girl to escape her strict, overbearing aunt. Edward is the new earl returned home from the war and who repeatedly encounters Amelia in her peasant-guise. Cue shenanigans and a very reluctant attraction on both sides.

When Amelia's uncle and guardian, the Viscount, whisks her off to London in order to marry before she comes of age (21, fear not!), her deception unravels and Edward discovers who she really is. As his estate is under threat and Amelia is in danger of being married off to one of her uncle's friends, it transpires that only they can save each other.

If they can get past the little issue of her lies, that is. Oh, and if they both don't die in the attempt.

This is a fun, rambunctious tale of adventure, deception and dastardly villains. It's fast, pacy, and has the perfect combination of action and romance. As a big fan of Georgette Heyer, I was pleased to find this combines her fun, action-filled plots with a more modern pace and prose. I'm looking forward to reading more by Kiera!

It's been very long since I read Historical romance. It was quite a refreshing read. I love Amy and Edward. They both were so sweet and loved how their relationship developed throughout the book. It was with lies but slowly it went to be a deep friendship. I liked Amy's wit and praticality. She fought for her freedom. I loved Edward and his struggles. How he tried to do the right thing. He was the hero. After so long i read very clean romance. Only one or two kiss! Haha but i loved it. It was trill on its own! It has suspence, romance with Little mystery!

As this is my debut novel, I may be a tad biased, but if you enjoy Georgette Heyer, give this a try! With an impoverished earl, an heiress in disguise and a wicked guardian up to no good, what can go wrong? The main characters are well-rounded and supported by a cast of interesting others. Set in Regency England, this is a great read for anyone who enjoys historical romantic fiction.
