Set sail with Captain Oliver Quintrell on three voyages spanning the years 1802 through 1804. When commanded to go to the nether ends of the globe during the Peace of Amiens, Captain Quintrell cannot conceive what manner of dangers await him (FLOATING GOLD). After one successful mission, war with France resumes and Quintrell is despatched on another secret mission far from the sea-lanes of Europe (THE TAINTED PRIZE). In 1804, with his regular crew aboard, Oliver is commanded to assist in the defence of Gibraltar. But the insidious enemy that confronts him is both deadly and unforgiving in whom it targets (ADMIRALTY ORDERS).
Solid entries into the Napoleonic seafaring sagas. Plotlines are fantastical, I believe, in an effort to differentiate from Aubrey and Bolitho series of books. These do, at times strain believability. 3.75 stars. Well researched.
I bought the complete Oliver Quintrell Trilogy. But as these are three books, I want to count them as three different books.
Therefore I will rate the first two books separately and the third book within the trilogy entry.
Also the third book in the trilogy - ADMIRALTY ORDERS - contiuned on the high level of the first two books. This time the story showed some dramtic events.
I do not want to compare the Oliver Quintrell series with the Aubrey & Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. But there is one thing which surprised me and I asked myself if this may have been the fate of Captains.
The relationship to women is difficult for Oliver Quintrell and Jack Aubrey.
I was really happy when I read that there will be a fourth book starring Oliver Quintrell - Coins for the Colony.
