A large proportion of adults are of the opinion that, “Children’s Books”, are easy to write. After all children are simple creatures, right? Wrong! Children are sophisticated readers who can spot a fake at a thousand paces.
When an online publisher accepted my children’s novel I was thrilled. The thrill of publication soon died when I spotted a grammatical error in the galley proof that authors receive from publishers. I pointed out the error to the publisher, who told me, “It’s only a children’s book don’t worry.” I withdrew my book from that publisher.
Robyn Opie Parnell’s book shows in great detail all that awaits prospective children’s writers. She explains plots, character development, target audience limitations, what goes into descriptions and most the most important point of all – Show Don’t Tell!
To become a professional writer for children, you must first decide if the genre is for you. Robyn’s book gives great insight on how to go through this decision process. It’s important that you like to read books of the type you want to write. No good trying to write a picture book, a chapter book or an early reader, if you can’t stomach them. Your distaste will come out in the writing. Children’s books are not easy to write and Robyn explains in clear terms why this is so.
Robyn has a wealth of information in her book to assist those writers willing to apply themselves to the craft of writing for children. Her book addresses character development, point of view, dialogue, the discovery of ideas and all other aspects that are required of a professional writer. You may even find, as I did, that writing children’s books is not for you. Robyn’s book provides a good platform for adult writing or other forms of expression in the field of children’s literature, such as plays.
“How to Write a Great Children’s Book”, is a worthwhile tool for any writer to purchase. I found information contained in the book enlightening, easy to understand and inspiring. This is one book that I can truly say is, “Worth its weight in gold.”
Starting out as a writer is a daunting task. Robyn’s excellent book will certainly ease the burden. If you purchase Robyn’s book and follow her guidelines, your book will have an excellent chance to shine. I highly recommend – How to Write a Great Children’s Book – to those authors contemplating entering the challenging field of children’s writing.

September 17, 2020I have never felt I wasted $2.99 before in my entire life, but with this piece of rubbish, I have admitted I did just that.
What a nightmare of self absorbed mentally challenged codswallop. Mediuming and self congratulating with almost nothing resembling an original idea. I suspect this charlatan did an online course called "how to write a children's book', then reproduced what she remembered, after a couple of bottles of a cheap red (probably a cask), and was pleased to see if a sucker like me would part with my hard earned.
Joke's on her anyway, since I was able to get my money back after I complained to the Filipinos at Amazon, who agreed.. "yes sir, it was absolute nonsense".

A very easy-to-digest and implement guide full of insightful advice for anyone starting out with writing children's books. I highly recommend this guide to any budding children's Author.
