Torn between duty and desperation, Khara is haunted by a mysterious grove that calls to her in her dreams. Finding the grove may lead to her missing memories, but venturing beyond the city walls is an act of treason. Worse, it risks another encounter with the ruthless rebel forces.

Absolutely loved the book and I'll try my best not to spoil the story because I like how the author kept the mystery.

Synopsis:

Story is about a girl who wakes up in the medical wing of a palace totally forgotten who she is and how she got there. But she has her doting fiancé, the Sovereign, who loves her so much that he suffers every moment she spent suffering. She is told that she was attacked by the rebels conspiring against the Sovereign. But even after months of recovery she stills has this strange episodes of pain that leave her devastated. Her best friend is always by her and her fiancé always ready to help. Desperate to get her memories back and make herself capable enough to become the future ruler Khara will do anything. Khara loves her fiancé Ramsey but she is keeping secrets from him. She is having these strange dreams where a magical grove calls to her, remnants of her memories coming back which she keeps protected in her journal. Getting to the grove might help her remember something but going beyond the walls is treason. Whoever goes beyond never comes back, the rebels are ruthless. But desperation got the better of Khara and she decides she will go no matter what. And there she encounters her biggest enemy. Hayden, the one responsible for her currents state, the loss the pain all because of this one person. But to her surprise he offers to help her regain her memory. Taking help from her enemy, betraying her loving fiancé putting the safety of her people at stake what will Khara do.

Review:
The story proceeded a bit slow but I think it was compulsory to keep the mystery and to keep the events in streamline. Author did an amazing job when the secrets unfold the plot twist shocked me. The scene descriptions in the book were beautifully crafted, offering vivid imagery that will transport you into the magical world. Character descriptions were rich and detailed I could easily picture each character with clarity. Moreover, the author skillfully explained the feelings and emotions. Detail and explanation throughout the book was excellent.

Characters:
Characters were loveable and mysterious

Khara: Her character was confused but still using her wits. She was being monitored and guided by people around her but she still didn't let it falter her. She was determined to get her memories back. Dealing with lies, betrayal and devastating secrets she acts reasonably.

Ramsey: His character was well written. He was loving and caring towards Khara and did his best to help her. His determination and dedication towards his goals were amazing and the dark side of his character was shocking. But there are secrets his betrayal was totally unexpected. It was shocking what he did.

Hayden: In first half of the book he was explained as a cruel rebel leader but he is was a total opposite too soft and kind. At times I thought his character was weak and pathetic but by the end my perception changed. We see him in full authority and action later which was good.

Gage: All I'd say about him is that he gives Kenji Kishimoto vibes and he is my favourite character.

I found the explanation of the magical world a bit difficult to grasp at first but it was interesting there is still a lot missing about Khara which will hopefully unravel in the next book.

Who is this book for?
for someone who enjoys mystery, elemental magic, betrayal, ruler and rebel
for the fans of Shatter me and Shadow and Bone series

Overall I enjoyed the book and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Thank you Kristin Ardis for the review copy

Oh my God, this book exceeded all my expectations! I absolutely loved it from the first chapter, eveything about it is so well executed. The writing is so good, the characters are so vivid and multifaceted, and the plot is incredibly engaging. Every page drew me in deeper, and before I knew it, I was completely immersed in the world the author created. It's rare to find a fantasy book that captivates me so completely from start to finish, but this one did just that. I found myself laughing, crying, and holding my breath in suspense as the story unfolded. And the way the author tied everything together in the end was so breath catching. This is definitely a book I'll be recommending to everyone I know! I am honored to be a part of the ARC team of this book, though my review is a 100% unbiased.
I always find it hard to get into a new fantasy, thus why I don't read that many books from this genre, and I must admit I was anxious starting this one, but as already mentioned, I got hooked from the first page even! So for that, thank you Kristin! I had such a good time reading this one, and absolutely can't wait for the next books in the series. Happy debut release! 5 stars (might be a 6 stars)

I finished this on Valentine's Day, and it was the perfect timing! The book doesn't even publish for another few weeks, and I'm already itching to read the sequel. How am I going to wait??

Kristin Ardis did an absolutely fantastic job writing this as her debut novel! I was hooked into the storyline on the first page when Khara was escaping a medical wing. So many questions flooded my brain from the beginning, and I loved every second of it.

I also book nerded out with the shorter chapters because they sucked me right in like a Netflix binge. Oh, only 3 pages in the next chapter? I can read one more! 10 chapters later... It's my favorite when authors can write in a way that brain tingles like this happen!

5.5 stars. Highly recommend!

🌶️/5

The story follows Khara, the future Sovereigna of the kingdom, who lost her memories due to a rebel attack.

I thought the story was overall very interesting and well written. I like the presence of more modern aspects, such as the technology inside the palace and the cars. I feel like we never see day-to-day objects in fantasy books. Of course, most of those things were run by magic, but I thought it was great.

Although I liked the story, I feel like the beggining was extremely slow paced seeing as the action only picked up at 30% of the book. I also felt like the plot was predictable to some extent.

Now for the characters. I loved them! The way they were written and portrait was perfect. I grew fond of some of the characters throughout the story and it was such a nice feeling. Only thing I liked a bit less was how often Khara was helpless. She is, first and foremost, a strong woman who puts herself at risk to discover truths but she's often in position of helplesness like she has no ressources to help her out of some situations.

Overall, I liked this story and I would definitely recommend it. I'm excited to see what book 2 has to offer!

The author, Kristin Ardis, created a beautiful world where the main character Khara has to rediscover herself after a traumatic injury. Fighting herself on what is right or what is wrong, will she be able to remember who she is? Will she be able to decipher her dreams?
Read the book at find out!!

Honestly, this book was brilliant.
This was a perfect mix of absolutely heart wrenching and action packed. Every character was beautifully developed. I could feel every moment and when the book brought you into a high intensity moment, i could feel it in my bones.

I both adore and feel for Khara, the stress, the confusion. Wanting to lock herself away for messing up, I am right there with her. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book 😩

I had the opportunity to ARC this book!!

MEMORY LOSS
YOUNG ADULT
FANTASY

Khara wakes up in the medical wing, not knowing where or who she is. Ramsey, who is her Fiance, tries to help her regain her memories while healing. Telling her stories of their past.

But things aren't what they seem, and her dreams tell her to go to the Grove. She also hears a voice telling her to " come home." When she gives in to her dreams and finally goes to the Grove, she has more questions than answers when she meets someone who is suppose to be her enemy but is to kind and compassionate to be the enemy.

Will she recover and regain her memories to remember who is a friend and who the enemy is?

My most favorite thing about this book is having a compassionate MMC! He shows his emotions and isn't afraid to cry. Men are always portrayed to be tough and brutal. He wants to protect Khara, but also, you see the pain and sadness that he is going through with her not remembering him!

I highly recommend it!!

Smoke and Light by Kristin Ardis is a YA romance fantasy novel about a heroine with lost memories, a kingdom divided, and a world filled with elemental magic.

“You have to take chances if you want what lies on the other side of your fear.”

What I love about Kristin's writing is how she doesn't rush the story. The main character, Khara, begins the novel waking from a rebel attack that left her unconscious from severe injuries. Her recovery is slow, but it makes the story feel authentic. Readers get to see how difficult the healing process is for Khara, and it's this element that helps us empathize and connect with her.

I also enjoyed the mystery aspect to the story as we get to witness Khara piece together her lost memories one at a time. To peak your interest, she doesn't always piece the memories together correctly (which makes for A LOT of tension). Instead of a "who done it" mystery this is a "who can she trust" mystery. Personally, I love this type of mystery, so it really worked for me.

It also had some lovable and memorable side characters who really added to both the plot and the main characters individual character arcs.

This was a 4/5 stars for me, and I can't wait to read the sequel!

This was my first ARC and my my! It'll be hard to beat it!
Where to start? I loved the evolution of her personality as she started to remember and the absolute badass that came out when a certain memory came back.
Now honestly, I like my books on the smutty side so I wasn't so sure I'd like the story but it was so beautifully written, it didn't need it. *tho just to be clear I'd be HERE FOR IT*
The characters felt well defined and developed, the world was interesting, and the pace was captivating.
Now, my gripe is the CLIFFHANGER?! At least its a soft? cliffhanger and I'm thoroughly ready for the next book.

SMOKE AND LIGHT is truly a triumph of a book. It handles difficult subjects with grace and talent, honoring both character autonomy and the intricacies of personal and interpersonal struggles. It's intriguing, compelling, heartbreaking, swoony, and captivating.

It will make time laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you scream WAIT IM SORRY WHAT?!

I have never read another book like this. It has an unshakeable spot in my Top 3 favorite books of all time. And why Top 3?

Well, I'm giving future books in the trilogy space to take the other two rankings ;)

This is a grand story! The characters and the world are easy to fall in love with. Khara, Smoke and Light’s main character, is easy to root for and it’s a wild ride to watch her grow in this story. This is only the beginning of a series where resilience and hope shine through the aftermath of war and brokenness. I’m ready for more!

A world where magic and science meet that has mythical forests, political tension, and a main character trying to remember who she is make this story one to enjoy!

For one, the worldbuilding was unique to anything I've read so far! Magic comes from one sacred forest on the continent, and is used to power some familiar technologies - cars, hand scanners, elevators, etc. Individual people may also be gifted with elemental magic, such as wind powers, lightning, and fire. The area is composed of the Diamond Kingdoms, and each set of rulers have their own titles. Where the story takes place in Anluan, theirs follow the pattern of "Sovereign" and "Sovereigna." What great touches to create a realistic world! All in all, the history and culture had me hooked!

The "amnesia trope" is one I struggle with sometimes, but in Smoke & Light, our main character Khara is memoryless from the get-go. I enjoyed the edge of mystery and intrigue this gave the story, and I was more and more invested with every passing page in Khara's journey!

I found the side characters both well-developed and suspicious - meaning I wasn't even sure who to trust at first and if Khara was putting her hope in the right people! Gage had my heart from the get-go with his laissez-faire attitude; Emila seemed like a genuine best friend; and Ramsey was basically the perfect fiancé. But then Khara's mysterious dreams and several new people she meets suggest a twist? Enter some intrigue...

During all this, there was a ton of focus on character development, emotions, and interpersonal relationships that slowed the pacing down, but these moments also gave us a deep look into what grief, illness, recovery, friendship, and trust look like. The development here was top-notch, and lovers of character-driven stories will love this first installment in the series!

On that note, romance plays a big part in Khara's journey in this book, but I don't want to say too much about the details, as that is part of the mystery while reading. There is a kind of love triangle situation happening for a bit, and some things get gray for Khara. I have seen several reviews that decry the circumstances as cheating, but I would disagree. See the spoiler tag for the full details if you're concerned:

Naturally, the greater plot is slower and more of a background trickle during the majority of the book. However, near the end the action explodes and so much happens within the span of 100 or so pages!

This is where I came alive in the story (me and my plot-movement loving heart lol)! The tension that had been building towards an inevitable conflict bursts aflame, Khara makes some life-altering decisions, and more information about both the past and the current wider world get revealed. SO. INTRIGUING.

I cannot wait for book 2 and seeing what the consequences are and how things continue to play out!

**content notes: constant health struggles on par with a chronic illness, violence, torture (the only part showed on-page is characters overwhelmed by their fears and crying out in pain), betrayed trust, child abandonment (off-page), death of family members (off-page). The author has a full list of triggers if you would like to check on anything!
**romance notes: some kisses that get heated. an implied intimate moment (fade-to-black, off-screen), but that then is referenced frequently for plot reasons.

Thank you to the author, Kristin Ardis, for the gifted ebook copy. All opinions and thoughts are fully and genuinely my own.

What an amazing book. I loved almost everything about it; the characters, the plot, the world. Everything.

To begin, the dynamic between Khara and Hayden was really sweet, and I loved the history that was included. Khara in general was an amazing character and was written so well. She was funny, intelligent, kind, and empathetic, but she also was not perfect, which was really appreciated. Her struggles with her amnesia and memory loss were honest and realistic, and also somewhat relatable. Hayden was also such a sweet character. He was kind when Khara needed him and he never pushed her boundaries. I did find him a little lacking in depth, though it's likely we'll get to know him more as the series continues. I also loved the other characters, like Emila and Gage (he's my favorite). Both of them were super funny and such good friends to Khara, despite the unexpected twists.

Additionally, the world building was spectacular. I loved the blend of modern and fantasy, and having both magic and technology gave it a unique taste that was super enjoyable. Also, the histories that were included and the dynamic between the rebellion and the palace was really detailed and complex. Clearly a lot of thought was put into it.

The plot was good, despite being kind of predictable. I was able to guess the plot twist pretty early on in the novel, but somehow it didn't take away from the actual event. I wasn't expecting the extremity of it, I suppose. The pacing was really good; I was never bored with it, though I did feel it was a little long and probably could've been cut down a little. I thought the end was climactically anticlimactic, if that makes any sense. Almost like there was a lot of crazy stuff going on, but I wasn't like "oh my gosh, what is happening?!" That may be because I already predicted it was going to happen, though.

And the writing!! Oh my gosh, it was so good. It was so descriptive, and I felt like I was within the scene myself, watching from afar. That barely ever happens. I loved the different uses of figurative language to describe things.

All in all, this was a terrific book. Thank you so much to Kristin Ardis for providing me with an ARC copy of your book! My review is entirely based on my own thoughts and opinions.

I was very lucky to receive an ARC from Kristin. I'm so very happy I did. This story was epic. I was on tenterhooks throughout the whole book, it built up so much suspense and I craved the build up in my soul wanting to know what was happening, but needing to keep it at that same slow burning pace for fear I'd keel over. I wanted to story to continue forever but I needed it to end my suffering at the same time. I didn't know anything but romance could be a slow burn until this.
The mystery throughout the story was so sweet, sad and breathtaking at times and it tugged on my heart strings. I felt like I was right there with the MC suffering her pain as she fought tooth and nail to get back what she was. All that was taken from her. I adored the world building, I liked the fact it all took place in one area. I felt very familiar with the locations due to the excellent detail and wished for a secret stroll myself in starry groves. It's not often I find a book that isn't riddled with spice. I appreciated that, I enjoyed that fact because it was different. It kept the fantasy and magical elements true to form. I am now of course desperate for the rest of the trilogy. I feel like my life will be incomplete until I find out what's next. I am very unsettled by cliff hangers. I require all the bookses now. Gimme gimme.
So I will await the next book, just know we have unfinished business here lady. I dub thee a demon woman for putting me in this tense state which shall feel like eternity, also, I love all the attention to detail you've put into this book, the characters, the big reveals, the suspense, the world, the POV, the writing. Just all of it. So it's totally worth it.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with me. I can't wait for the official release to force my sisters to join the fan club. 💜

4.5 stars overall!
Let me start by saying I went into this read knowing nothing about this book. I knew it was a YA/NA fantasy, but that’s it. And I was completely blown away by how much this world and its politics sucked me in. If you don’t want to read my lengthy thoughts, just know that it is a strong start to what I hope will be at least a few more books in the series. If you like YA fantasy, this is for you.

Let’s start with tropes. We have the amnesia trope, which until this book I claimed to dislike. It usually feels like an author’s way of conveniently working a plot point. Here, we hit it right out the gate, and it just works. As a reader you’re confused and have no clue what is really going on because your narrator is the exact same way. It just had my jaw dropping at the way this worked as a reader. Imagine starting the Hunger Games series in the middle of Mockingjay from Peeta’s point of view. Just an overall delightful experience where you trust no one.

The love triangle trope is there but not in an annoying way, so I’m all about that. I would argue that while the romance is an important plot device here, the book is not about the romance. The book - for me, at least - felt more centered on the character building and the politics, and I devoured them.

Character-wise, we get a really strong foundation of the main players. It’s all from one point of view, and, as we find out very early, that pov may be flawed. So that plays into how the characters begin to develop for the readers.

As far as world building and magic systems, the base is all there. I’m interested and cannot wait to see how these build in future books.

The plot and conflicts had me hooked. It’s so strange to look back on the read as a whole and realize that not a lot of things actually happened in the book, but it didn’t feel that way in the reading. We spend a lot of time in Khara’s head as she fights through and dirt things out, so even if not a lot is actually happening, it never feels slow.

Overall, this book is a strong yes for me. I’m so glad I joined this arc team on a whim (fairly certain it was recommended by author Renee Dugan).

Thank you to Kristin Ardis for the ARC.

Plot 4.75/5

Characters 4.5/5

Ending 4.5/5

Interest 5/5

Overall 4.5/5

-I really enjoyed this book. Diving into a new world with a new magic system was really nice and the mix with science was also really intriguing although I was a little disappointed because I though there would be more talk of mixing magic and science and it felt like it was only briefly mentioned. Aside from that, everything was really great and I had a very good time reading this book. I’m not usually one who liked memory loss as a trope but I really liked how int his book, it’s actually part of the plot and it makes sense that it’s there instead of it just being a shitty plot twist.
-I really enjoyed reading about these characters. Khara was great and I sometimes wished she was flushed out a bit more but since she’d lost all of her memories, it does make sense that she’s not completely developed but I hope that in the next books we get to know more about her. I also really want to find out more about Hayden, his character and his background. I also really am curious about finding out more about Ramsey and Emila.
-A lot of reveals and twists that happened were quite predictable but I do feel like it was written in a way in which I didn’t mind. It did make the story easier to follow and there were elements that surprised me but overall the ending was quite predictable. Although the final scenes were amazing to read.

I loved it.
So here is what I liked in this book: Firstly, the twists, Khara (our main character) lost her memories, so we get to learn about the world and society she lives in while she learns about it too, so we get to know the sweet Ramsey and kind Emilia… and then as the story goes on you might change your mind…

Secondly, the characters, surprisingly I personally did not get attached to the main character at first but more others, you get into the story really quickly.

Lastly, while the pace can a few times be a bit slow, all the descriptions and dialogues are very interesting and well-written.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the series !

4.5 ⭐

I love that, while this is a magical world, you sometimes forget that. The magic isn't overly present throughout, and the book is more focused on mostly non-magical plot. The story is so well thought out down to the little easter eggs throughout the book that lead the reader to believe certain things, whether they're real or not. It imitates what Khara is going through with her memory loss, and it was really cool to follow along with that.

I absolutely LOVE the characters in this book and the love they have for Khara is amazing. It felt like getting wrapped up in a family bear hug 🤗. The characters are deep and emotional. I teared up a few times reading how the impact of Khara's memory loss affected not only her, but also those around her. Kristin did such a good job of showing that.

For me, I thought the plot was a little predictable. I was able to guess almost all of the larger events. Honestly, I still loved the plot so much, so it didn't deter me that much (I mean, it still got 4.5 stars, so, obviously lol). It also took me a little bit to get into the book because the pace in the beginning is very slow. There was a part that went over the history of the country and it felt like an information dump. Thankfully though, most of that is sprinkled throughout the book as well, so I don't feel like I missed much.

✨ Highly recommend. The plot is great, the characters are fantastic (they MADE the book), and a great setting as well.

⚠️ Content warning: this is closed door, fade-to-black. Intimacy level 2.5 (make-out sesh to a literal closed door fade-to-black, some intimate touching but no bikini area)

i’m embarrassed to say i’ve had this book for far too long without reading it, and i’m mad it took me so long (but also kinda glad i read it closer to the second one being finished lol), because i LOVED it

ya romantic fantasy is my bread and butter so we were already off to a good start there, but i was immediately intrigued by khara’s memory loss and coming up with theories galore about what the truth would be and who the liars really were.

the world is very interesting there is magic and monarchs of some sort, but the magic is tied into technology and they have advanced security systems and even cars. a very interesting fusion between the modern world and a fantasy setting.

although the world building was interesting, this book is definitely character focused. the journey khara goes through is extremely emotional and complex, which leads to very complex and dynamic relationships with those around her, especially considering she had developed relationships previously with them that she doesn’t remember.

as soon as hayden was even so much as mentioned i knew he was My Guy™ lol, i was getting very impatient for a while when he would come into play.

i truly devoured this book, it perfectly balanced being interesting and complex but still easy to follow and understand. and the “aftermath” epilogue chapter 👀 i can’t wait to see where this story goes!

also i love finding an indiana author that i love, so that’s a big perk ☺️

I read an early copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Honestly, I got so lucky finding this book, because it is every single thing I could want from a YA/NA fantasy! Firstly, the world-building and the magic system are so intricate, absorbing, and well-done. This is high fantasy, but not in your traditional sword and sorcery way. Instead, it's a clever blend of magic and technology that is fresh and enjoyable to read! This story is the exact perfect blend of magic and mystery, and I truly cannot wait to learn more about this world.

Also, every character, from the heroes to the villains to the ones in shades of grey, is SO well-written. They are complex and believable, and very engaging. Honestly, Khara's pain and fear is MY pain and fear. It's impossible not to root for her, she's just such a genuine character. I also think every side character is very interesting and compelling in their own way, especially Hayden and Ramsey, but Gage and Emilia as well. I literally cannot wait to learn more about them. (Also...I might be team Gage?)

Overall, I love this book so much, the author is super talented! There's just the right amount of magic, and mystery, and tension, and romance, and still so twisty and surprising. Fantasy lovers, you cannot sleep on this one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 (4.25 stars)

I fell in love with this story! The whole aspect of Khara's lost memories had me eagerly reading and guessing about her past and her connections to the various characters in the book.

Speaking of the characters; the character development in this book is excellent! I love Khara's growth throughout and I can't wait to see how she continues to find herself in the next book!

I will admit I wasn't the biggest fan of Hayden for the majority of the book, but that changed during the last third of the story. At this point we finally get to see more of him and begin to see more development of his character. It completely makes sense to happen this far into the book, given the story's context. Now, if course, I love him and can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Oh! I don't want to get into too many details (I don't want to spoil anything), but I also adore how well Ramsey, Gage, and Emilia are developed as characters! Due to how well all of the characters were written, I was able to really connect with them and feel all the emotions while reading (one of my favorite things about getting lost in books).

Overall, I highly recommend reading this book!

*Thank you to the author for an eARC of this book!

Khara has complete memory loss from a rebel attack. All she knows is what her best friend and fiance have told her, but she wants to remember. Things also aren't adding up, and no one seems overly forthcoming with information. She will have to fight a battle within herself between her responsibilities to her kingdom and where her loyalties truly lie. I enjoyed this book a lot. As a reader you know something's up, but you watch Khara slowly figure this out and just wait for her to catch up. There is a lot tension and suspense as you wait for Khara to understand and to put all the puzzle pieces together. There are some parts in the middle that slow down and cause some impatience, but it's worth the wait to watch a sweet romance play out as Khara begins to remember the past. Khara does finally understand what is happening and starts to become her own person again and show she is more than a helpless victim in this story. She starts to remember her past and become the hero of her own story. 5 out of 5 stars from me, and I'm looking forward to the 2nd book of the trilogy!

Smoke and Light by Kristin Ardis is a YA romance fantasy novel about a heroine with lost memories, a kingdom divided and a world filled with elemental magic.
The story starts as the heroine is recovering from severe injuries and she has lost all of her memories.

We get to see her slow recovery, how difficult it is for her that see cannot remember the people aound her. It is not easy to know who to trust. As you can imagine, there will be some surprises and betrayal.

The world itself is an interesting mix between magic and modern technology like cars and security systems.

The character development is good, we can really see the heroine grow during the book. The side characters are written well and you can really connect with them.

I can't wait for the next book!

Thank you Kristin Ardis, for the book I received.

I liked this book and am patiently waiting for the next. When I first started reading the book I kept thinking to myself "wait, did I miss a book and am reading the second? I don't understand what is happening" solely because of Karah's memory loss and not knowing initially what happened to get to that point.

After getting to the part of why she lost her memory and realizing Ramsey is the enemy it all made sense because Ramsey was manipulating Karah the whole time and had the people in her life specifically placed to further the manipulation *cough* Emilia *cough*.

When it finally started to get into the action and I realized I was getting close to the end it made me crave more and I can't wait to read the next book to find out more of what happened to Karah and to see what her true powers are.

ARC Review:
This book started out with a slower pace. However, I think that’s necessary to the storyline. The book begins with the main character, Khara, experiencing complete memory loss. So as Khara learns about her life and the world she lives in, so does the reader.

The first half was a lot of world building and story set up. Although, from very early on, it’s clear there are a lot of secrets and lies so the reader is already on edge trying to piece together what’s real and what’s not.

There were so many different elements here that made for a really interesting read: war, a city in turmoil, memory loss, second chance romance, magic, and mystery!

The last quarter of the book really picked up and provided a lot of answers and action! I’m super excited to read the next book and see where the story takes us.

"Smoke and light collided, and the world turned to chaos."

This was such an AMAZING read. I honestly couldn't put it down. Kristin does a great job creating this world with these characters. There is intrigue from the first page. At times, the mystery was frustrating, but in the way that makes you want to keep reading to figure out what in the world is going on?!? To me, it just added an element to the book that was unique and kept my interest piqued. I'll definitely be a fan of this author from now on!
Khara was a character I felt a tremendous amount of empathy for. She is a character that will stay with me, and I'm so excited for the continuation of her story. This is an emotional story that had me laughing and crying. I also really enjoyed all the side characters. The author did an excellent job crafting this story. It's definitely worth a read!

I thought the beginning was a little slow but I trusted the process and I'm glad I did. Loved this book! It's a completely different story line for me. It starts out with the MFC, Khara, trying to get her memories back. She keeps experiencing these episodes of pain that get better after taking a pill. Everyone around her is super supportive and attentive, but after a bit I started second guessing everyone. Are the stories she hears true? Eventually the plot thickens and at that point I just couldn't stop reading. Every chapter left me wanting more information. I was dying to know if my theory was correct or not.
The auther did a great job making the characters believable and relatable. I was laughing. I was sluething. I can't wait for the next book to come out.
I would have given it 5 stars if the beginning didn't drag on for so long.

Smoke and Light is a powerful read that poses the question: how do our memories—or the absence of them—define us? Readers will be transported to a lush world of magic and intrigue, full of twists, turns, and complex characters that are hard to forget.
Khara is a protagonist worth rooting for. I truly felt like I was learning and growing alongside her as she recovers from the rebel attack that stole her memories. I loved seeing the kingdom and the larger world through her eyes, and she's truly a force to be reckoned with!
Smoke and Light is a gorgeous novel, and I can't wait for readers to be able to hold it in their hands.
I had the opportunity to beta read Smoke and Light, and I'm voluntarily leaving my honest review!
