Mary Jane Elizabeth Behrends Clark (1954-) is the author of thirteen novels, including 12 in the KEY News media thriller series, and one in her new Wedding Cake mystery series. A veteran writer and producer for CBS News, Clark worked for almost three decades at the network’s New York City headquarters. Her books are published in twenty-three languages. She lives in New Jersey and Florida.
I really liked this book! But I only found out after I was finished reading it that it was the fifth in the series. I had been given a small box of unwanted books and this was included and there wasn't another by this author in the box. Naturally I would like it, Now I will need to see if I can find more to complete the series! Even though this is not the type of story I usually like to read... This book took me on quite an interesting ride with many, you could say Interesting Characters. The main character being Cassie Sheridan who was the KEY News Justice Correspondent in Washington D.C. and handled very sensitive news stories at a time when her career was skyrocketing, Cassie Sheridan was looked up to and trusted. She was very independent and determined in carrying out her news stories with competence and sensitivity. Until Cassie made a critical mistake and suddenly her career was in shambles that got her transferred to Florida, From then on Cassie pretty much dropped out of the nightly news, Even at that she tried her best to give it her all while she was denied any of the main news worthy stories. She was only given weather reports that had to do with disastrous hurricanes and flooding to wait out the end of her contract. This turn of events separated her from her Her Husband and an angry teenage daughter. Cassie was given an assignment to a hurricane watch in a small town on the Gulf coast to do video updates and interviews with the population on how they were handling the storm and then the evacuation, if it came to that. But that wasn't all that was happening in this small town, there was a suspected serial killer stalking women, multiple murders, missing children and on top of that Cassie had to deal with her daughters feelings plus fearing deep in her soul she was going to lose her family but she was unable to leave. Even though I could see the writing on the wall along the way I was still surprised by the chaotic action while the town-people were being evacuated. Cassie was trying to find certain people and the final act that Cassie endured to save a young boy that she had made friends with, but who became knowingly involved with a very dangerous man he thought he could trust to do what he promised. There is so much more to this story. You will just have to read to find out why 'Nobody Knows'
This book is what I like to call a "slow-starter". It started off rather boring, but eventually it did grab my attention. It took quite awhile for me to finish this book; mostly because I had so much trouble really getting into it in the beginning.
I found parts of this book a bit hard to follow as well. I have never cared as much for the third person omniscient point of view. It can get a little confusing when the book has several characters. Let me tell you, this book certainly has its fair share of characters. The book switches character's points of view so often that I may or may not have developed a sort of reading whiplash!
All of that being said, though, the characters were interesting enough to keep me going until the plot picked up. Once the plot became more interesting, which occurs about half way through, I found it difficult to put the book down.
If you are patient enough to make it through the first half, I do suggest that you read it. I believe you will find it worth the initial effort.
MJC knows how to catch her readers' attention - and keeps it. Another novel with a spine-tingling twist and lots of misleading clues, here's a good mystery if you want one. This is another one of her novels where the heroine is a KEY news broadcast journalist. I always enjoy reading about them, all of them have family issues due to their work. Just when Cassie thought she could spend time with her daughter, to somehow fix their broken ties, she gets an assignment and so, mother-daughter-day gone. Mary J Clark's short chapters would make you feel like watching a movie where the events happen simultaneously and would leave you palpitating, wondering what happens next, and who the culprit is. She has succeeded in misleading the reader and there's a touch of Christie where most of the characters become suspects. The events that lead to the conclusion were all vital, this one never drags.
Nobody Knows (2002) by Mary Jane Clark is a really well-plotted and thought-out mystery with plenty of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.
The book is written from many different perspectives. Clark paints very human characters and gives us great insight into their connections to the case and how life in general is treating them. Great character development and character psychology help make this book a treat to read. The main character is Cassie Sheridan who works as a news reporter. When we meet Cassie, her life is in a bit of turmoil after she made a wrong call in revealing the name publicly of a rape victim of the serial rapist and murderer who is on the loose in a Gulf Coast town. The woman who was raped subsequently took her own life and Cassie is filled with guilt about the woman’s death as well as fear about her future career.
In addition to this her marriage to her husband has fallen apart and due to her job, which she always puts first, she doesn’t see her daughter as often as she should. The second main character in this book is a young boy called Vincent Bayler who discovers the hand of a murdered woman while out trying to find treasures with his metal detector on the beach. With a hurricane on it’s way, Cassie and Vincent must find this serial rapist who disguises himself in clown make-up and put an end to his horrible crimes. But can they survive both death at the hands of the hurricane and this deadly killer?
Book 5 in the Key News Thrillers (where Cassie works), Clark constructs a fantastic plot with so many suspects that it makes it a difficult mystery to solve. I for one didn’t figure out the killer’s identity. This was the first book I read of Clark’s and I was very impressed with her writing. Mystery writing is one of the hardest genres to write in and she plotted this book expertly leaving no stone unturned and rounding the book off wonderfully by the end.
Her writing style is very fast-paced and this book is a real page-turner with many characters who you find yourself rooting for. A very intriguing plot that was well-crafted from beginning to end. Also Clark worked in television and the authentic way she wrote the television sections was spot-on which really added to the story. Great plot. Great characters. Great book. Faultless writing really.
A great book. You most certainly won’t be disappointed.
Cassie Sheridan has everything a great job as a television news reporter a husband and a 13 year daughter Hannah When all of a sudden her life changes when she covers a story of the first female director of FBI Maggie Lynch and her daughter who she named in the paper being raped and then the daughter killing herself Her husband wants to divorce her because she’s never around because she put her career first and her daughter would rather stay with her husband and the The news channels for her down to my and me to cover more of weather than anything else but that’s where she meets Vinson 11-year-old who discovers a body on the beach and from that she’s trying to determine who killed that person and who’s killing young girls the twist and turns in this book were OK but hard to follow at times but in the end she realizes the hard way that the most important thing in life is never take your blessings for granted

This is my first book read from this author, I did not realize there is a whole series to the collection, but is easily caught up in (if I continue to read series), I can catch up to the characters. I liked the story of the boy the most in this suspenseful but not too suspenseful mystery. There was a twist in a few areas which catches you by surprise and keeps you reading which is what happened to me. Great book for those who stay up late or just to fulfill an afternoon.
Meh, this was fine. It was a quick enough read that was a heart pounder at the end. There were way to many characters with their own storylines I could have cared less about. I think she was trying to throw a bunch of red herrings at us but it just made it crowded. It had the writing of a cozy mystery but the subject material of a more grizzly crime novel so that was confusing. Probably won't read more by this author
I liked it, there were parts I skimmed and times where it slowed a bit especially when she spent too much time talking about the camera man instead of the reporter. Then there was the problem that came with her doing a chapter per perspective including the climax meaning some chapters were literally half a page long and it kept jumping between the killer and the reporter too much. One more rewrite would have made this a masterpiece.
Cassie Sheridan works for KEY news and has been relegated to doing mundane work in Florida covering hurricanes and small stories, far from the Washington DC stuff she use to do. During the latest hurricane story she uncovers serial killer and has to try to find them before they find her. It was a little formula driven but I didn't guess who the killer was until the very end which is a good mystery to me.
Cassie is a major news reporter who makes a mistake and gets shuffled down to Florida. While reporting on a hurricane she unwittingly becomes involved in another story about a rapist. Fast moving story, but the ending was too abrupt and we never find out if Cassie’s family life will be repaired. After spending a good chunk of the book worrying about her marriage and family, that was a real disservice to the readers.
a daughter of a senator was raped and a newspaper woman decided to make the annoucement of the rape and who. this action caused her to be sent to another place to be a report. little did she know that she would be posted in the area that the rapist lives. a little boy finds a hand on the shore with a big expensive ring he keeps the ring which starts to revolve the id identify of the killer . now the hunt is on. i found this novel slow start and a slow moving novel. the action was slow going
My first read by this author. I liked the small bitesize chapters that moved us quickly through the many charaters. That allowed me to make several wrong assumptions about who murdered porn star Marilee, the grogress of Hurricane Giselle and the fall and stumbling rise of TV newscaster CassieSheridan. Fast moving read.
The storyline keeps you in suspense as there are multiple possible suspects who may be the murderer. It definitely became a book very hard to put down at night for wanting to read "just one more page!"
This was fast paced and pretty compelling. An overabundance of minor characters and a subject matter darker than made sense for the style kept it from a solid 4-star rating. I'd read more from this author.
I read this in 2005, and don’t remember any details. At the time, I noted that it was an OK mystery about a TV anchor involved in a lawsuit, who is “demoted” from DC to Miami. I thought it needed better character development.
Good mystery. A lot of characters interacting together. It's pretty easy to keep them straight and the author did a good job to keep you wondering who the killer was. I didn't feel like there was much depth to the story and it would be easily forgettable, but it is an easy, entertaining read.
This was the first book I’ve read by Mary Jane Clark and I absolutely loved it. She writes beautifully and created an amazing story with great characters that all end up having a purpose! I had a really hard time putting it down. Amazing!
I do enjoy stories by Mary Jane Clark but I did find that with this one there were so many different characters that at times I was confused. A lot of false leads to figuring out who the killer actual was. I will continue to read her books.
This was an excellently written who done it mystery. As I read, I of course tried to see if I could figure out who the murderer was. However, I was completely wrong. The suspense and drama were perfect. Mary Jane Clark will keep you guessing until the very end!
I like mysteries by Mary Jane Clark, especially the Key News series. This one was not my favorite but was still an entertaining read. The ending wasn't great, but with these books it's about the journey not the destination.
This book was too fast paced for me. The characters moved by so quickly and there wasn’t much depth in them. I did like the southern charm and the all worrisome hurricane. I do love a southern mystery! This just wasn’t it.
