I am a strong believer that the Western approach of understanding pyschology is off track due to neglection of soul (nafs). The desperation to look at mental illness from bodily & scientific perspective only, listening to stories of friends undergoing medical treatment & therapy or sharing by practitioners in the industry..it is such a reductionist approach. Aren't human beings greater than that? Aren't the brain or bodily abnormalities we see in mental patients are just one spectrum of the illness?

As-syahid Sheikh Ramadan al-Buti made a practical commentary on it, without denying the need to go for medical treatment. He brought us back to the fundementals, and simplified the situation that if we have strong faith in Allah SWT, it is almost impossible for us to be depressed, and only those who have tried this knew this.

People in Palestine despite the extreme turbulence faced.
Stories of companions who acknowledged the calamities happening to them, but their faith diminished the impact, just like how bitter medicine healing and recovering people. Not that we are denying the bitterness or the painful surgery we undergo, but it is a process.

And Syeikh Ramadan al-Buti also discussed the interlinkages of feeling sinful as well as not able to attain ambitions to anxiety and despression. Including commentary on sorcery (sihr) and mental illness. Such an aalim and what a wisdom by him, may Allah bless him abundantly.

Not profound or new and it's quite repetitive but oh god I really needed this.

One of those books that you keep have to keep returning to for constant reminders as you walk through life. It feels like Shaykh Muhammad Sa'id Ramadan al-Buti (RA) is speaking directly to you, which is really helpful. It almost feels like the book is a piece of advice and wisdom rather than a "checklist" or "chapters to complete".

The appendix also contains a really helpful chart in going over the various forms of depression and anxiety in an intuitive way.

Highly recommend taking the book slowly instead of speeding through it.

Buku Depression & Anxiety: The Causes & Treatment According to the Qur'an oleh Hazem Nasr, Mahdi Lock, dan Muhammad Sa'id Ramadan Al-Buti menawarkan perspektif yang menarik mengenai isu kemurungan dan kegelisahan dari sudut pandang Islam.

This book brought clarity to questions about life and purpose. It reminds us that while adversities are inevitable, falling into despair is not. With clear explanations on the causes and remedies of depression and anxiety, supported by Qur’anic verses, it offers both insight and comfort. A highly recommended read for anyone seeking peace and grounding amid this chaotic life.

I read more than half of it but decided not to finish it because I didn’t find what I was looking for. I also felt like I already knew everything in it, so why would I waste my time?

This was ok, basic stuff I already know but it’s just not as good as other books on similar topics such as ‘healing the emptiness’. Good reminders nevertheless
