I don't normally leave reviews, but I am making an exception for The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine. Let me start by saying I have never read anything by Alexandrea Weis, and only recently had the privilege of sharing an author panel with her at Anne Rice's Undeadcon in New Orleans. I was mesmerized by the way the author spoke of her work and its inspiration, so much so that I downloaded the book that afternoon. As I read, I flew through the pages hungry for more and only stopped reading when my plane began its descent and I had to turn my kindle off.

I rarely dream about characters that aren't my own, and yet with The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine my dreams that night were filled with images from the story. Perhaps it was because I had just left New Orleans and everything was still fresh in my mind, but I don't really believe that. I KNOW it was because the story was that good. I finished the book the next day and am still thinking of it.

A thoroughly enjoyable romance with lots and lots of Naw'lins flavor! 5 Stars!

OMG! I love a good ghost story and Alexandrea delivers that and more with this exceptional romance. This was five stars plus!

Danica Giles grew up in a small Creole cottage located in the French Quarter of the thrilling and mysterious city of New Orleans. While living in that home, she fell in love with her best friend – a ghost named Gaston Deslonde. After her mother died, her father took Danica and they moved away. Now, having grown up and survived a disastrous marriage, she’s returned to her home, her cottage, and her best friend, Gaston.

Danica believes she loves the ethereal man who was her comfort and dearest friend as a little girl and even now seems so real to her. So much so that she's compared every man to him so she thinks herself happy when Gaston tells her that he knew she would return and now that she’s back, he’ll not allow anyone to harm her or cause her unhappiness. But when Danica meets a new man, Paul Gaudette, the son of her neighbor and is attracted to him, Gaston doesn’t like the idea of a budding relationship. He goes to desperate extremes to convince Danica that they can and will have a relationship worthy of their love. But at what cost?

THE GHOSTS OF RUE DUMAINE by Alexandrea Weis is exceptional, spellbinding, a little bit scary, and yet romantically sweet. It leaves us truly believing that we carry the love experienced in this life on into the next. Danica is fortunate to fall in love with two men who give back as much love as she gives to them. They just do it differently. Without giving away too much, I will say that Gaston, albeit a bit overbearing at times, truly loves Danica and there’s more than Danica's and Paul's happily-ever-after at stake.

I highly, highly recommend this amazing story about how love transcends the planes of being and that love can be a savior on many levels. THE GHOSTS OF RUE DUMAINE by Alexandrea Weis is a must read if you’re a fan of dreamy love stories with a twist, a few bumps in the night, and wonderful satisfying happily-ever-afters. Get this one to read during some quiet moments and be whisked away to the magic of the New Orleans’ French Quarter!

As a child Danica grew up in the French Quarter where she had a great friendship with a ghost, Gaston. Now 20 years later after an abusive mariage has finally ended she comes back to her old home to find some the happiness and safety she had there as a child. When Gaston shows himself to her again she realizes she has a wish for more than just a friendship with her ghost. But with their worlds divided all it can ever be is a hope. When her neighbor introduces Danical to her son, Paul, she sees the possibility for something more, but the back of he mind is still on Gaston. When halloween brings an unexpected suprise it could give her all her dreams, but at what price? And after the night is done she is left with more confusion than ever.

As Paul becomes more and more a fixture in her heart and terrible losses happen, they can either be pulled closer together torn apart forever. Only help from an unexpected source can help sort everything out, but will a melovelent spirit be too strong for Danica to overcome?

I loved the history of New Orleans throughout the story and the lessons that you can learn from the characters, even if you don't believe in ghosts. I enjoyed Gaston's teasing and also how much he grew until he was finally able to find the right path for himself. This is not your typical cheesy romance novel, and while there as romance in it the paranormal aspect made it so much more.

The cover is beautiful, the writing not so much so you might be inclined to reject this book at a first glance, but trust me, you would be making a huge mistake. This book is amazing because it is so different from anything you could have possibly read before.

The story line is beautiful and unique. The ending is unpredictable in a way and predictable in others, but this is what makes the book worth reading and if you add the quality of the writing you have a must read.

The book is beautiful and sad love story. I loved all the characters in it, even the weird ones. Danica is amazing. She’s been through so much, but she managed to maintain hope. After all the suffering she had to endure she managed to start over in the exact place where everything began. Her love for Gaston is unlimited, she is truly devoted to him because otherwise she wouldnt have kept her promise to him. I was so sad that they belong to two different dimensions and that they could never be together. When they were finally able to taste normalcy, I started hating Gaston with a passion. Thankfully it was short lived.

Gaston is a gentleman, but a man who knows exactly what he wants. I loved the scene when he finally claims what he always wanted. It definitely made the book more enjoyable ( no pun intended). He upbringing is showing more than once. When he does what he does in order to be with his beloved you cannot help yourself but despise him. Then it it clear that he was a spoiled brat of a very wealthy man. I was so glad that there were only a few pages like that because I couldn’t have handled more. In the end he finally accepts his condition and gives his love the chance to be happy and free.

Danica made the right choice of letting go and enjoying the present, but deep inside we all know to whom her heart truly belongs. She makes the right decision, but it is clear that she is waiting for the years to pass.

I hope I haven’t included any major spoilers, but it was impossible for me to review this book without mentioning a few things.

In conclusion, you must not skip this book because you have no idea what you are missing.

This was an absolute struggle to get through. It started off with an in interesting hook and I thought that this had quite a lot of potential; however, this ended up being a roller coaster of nonsense. I was so befuddled by the back and forth of not only the protagonist but the details, making it confusing to see the point of anything that was happening.

Danica returns to her childhood home in New Orleans after 20 years and a nasty divorce from an abusive husband. Her main objective in coming back is to reconnect with the ghost of Gaston who haunts her home. When she was younger, Gaston was a second father figure but now their relationship quickly turns sexual. Gaston flits between being in love with Danica and wishing her to live her own life since they can never be together.

Danica then meets her neighbor Claire, and her son, Paul. Danica and Paul have an instant connection which Claire approves of. Claire is also aware of Gaston, and uses him to ease her loneliness in an abusive marriage. Danica learns that Gaston is bound to Claire and when Claire becomes a ghost herself she suddenly changes her mind about Danica and her son Paul. Danica bounces between Paul who basically attaches himself to her after his mother's death and Gaston; who himself can't make up his mind either.

This story was just bizarre and nothing made a bit of sense. Claire approves of Danica and her son, then haunts them mercilessly because she thinks poorly of Danica? Danica loves Paul, obsessive and Gaston who is jealous? Gaston is trapped in this world because he never found real love (that he now has with Danica) but in the same section says that he is trapped because he killed himself? I'm just glad to be finished.

I really enjoyed this book. 5 out of 5 stars so to speak. It was the perfect mix of paranormal and historical fiction, two of my favorite genres. The characters are awesome and well developed. The kind of people that you really want to stop and get to know. I was really impressed with the authors ability to bring all of the details and scenery to life for me, as I've never been to New Orleans. It felt as if I were walking around Jackson Square with Danica and Gaston on Halloween night. Dining at Antoine's and seeing the sights. Also, I feel like the author deserves a shout out for her skillful love scene writing abilities. Being an avid book reader, I've read a few in the past that have had me cringing but Alexandrea Weis manages them with flair. I found them to be really well written. She somehow manages to make them HOT but tasteful at the same time.

The only complaint that I had while reading this book, (and it's not really a complaint, more of a personal observation), is that I would have liked it if Gaston had been more....old fashioned? He seemed very modernized for a ghost from the 1800s (though the author does explain the whys in the book).

All in all, I loved The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good ghost story!

The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine is a great ghost story; it captivated me and I flat out loved it. Ms. Weis has given us characters to love and dislike along with a very compelling love story. The New Orleans setting is a favorite of mine and Ms. Weis brings it to life for me. She has a talent for writing descriptions so vividly I am able to see the “yellow stucco” walls of Danica’s house, the French Quarter, and the characters in Jackson Square. I could smell “the aroma of cigar smoke mixed with a hint of brandy” when Gaston is in the room. Gaston became so real to me that I found myself falling for him and hoping (albeit, a bit unrealistically!) he and Danica could find a way to be together.

There are several threads to the plotline and a couple of twists, things I didn’t see coming. I was so wrapped up in the story that, at one point, I found myself in tears. I love when an author can evoke that kind of emotion from me! I also think that Ms. Weis did a great job with the love-making scenes. Perhaps a bit descriptive for some, I found them to be very well written and appropriate to the story.

The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine is a story I will read again and one I would recommend. I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Weis’ books – I love her voice.

Fleeing an abusive ex husband Danica heads back to the place where she always felt safe. New Orleans and the old house that she lived in as a child. After being warned of the horrible events that had occurred there over the years due to suspected ghost activity, she rents the old place anyway. Soon enough you find that it's because she knows the ghost, has known him since childhood, and has missed him since she left. She soon falls into a nice rhythm with Gaston, her old friend, often referred to by others as The Dark Man. Danica has always been half in love with Gaston and now is becoming more so, then she meets someone new, someone alive, someone she can have a real life with. Will Paul be enough to keep Danica from crossing a line with Gaston that should never be crossed? On top of having to make this monumental decision, there is a third party working their own magic and it could get them all killed, for real. This is a really cool book with several plot twists, quirky characters that you would expect in New Orleans, suspense, betrayal, and romance. I really enjoyed it and think that most anyone else would as well. I loved the ending even though it wasn't what I thought was coming, which I also like.

An incredible story of romance, mystery and paranormal suspense , that takes place in the heart of New Orleans a city, that is best known for their belief in superstition, voodoo, magic and local legends of ghosts ! The Authors vivid imagination was captured with such clarity and detail I could envision it in my mind as though I was right there!

Danica grew up in New Orleans for most of her childhood but moved away with her Father for a fresh start after suffering the sudden loss of her Mother. After many years and a divorce she decided to return to her home.
Much to her delight she learns that a ghost named Gaston, who was a friend to her growing up, still resides in the home which reassures her that she made the right decision. However she starts to hear disturbing stories of her beloved ghost which leads her to uncover dangerous secrets!
Be prepared once you start this book you won't be able to put it down!!

Alexandrea Weis has done it again!

She has somehow gotten me to read and enjoy a romance!

This terrific author is really a accomplished wordsmith, and instantly pulls you into her stories like it was second nature. I'm a big fan of ghost stories, but I have never read one like this.

It has a little of everything! Dare I say even a little paranormal hanky panky, as well as a little revulsion when you realize how it happened :O

Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone that likes romance and paranormal...or for that matter anyone!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. As usual, Ms. Weis paints a very vivid picture of New Orleans, going into great detail about the buildings and characters so it's like watching the story unfold as a fly on the wall. The characters face some very serious obstacles in their search for a happily ever after, and like in real life, some of those obstacles actually can't be overcome, which adds realism to this fantastical tale.

I would definitely recommend this book to paranormal romance fans.

Wanting love, a family and children she settles for the love and security of her childhood friend, the handsome and seductive ghost Gaston Deslonde. As friendship turns to unrequited desires, she quickly learns that the forbidden comes at a cost especially when faced with the lure of black magic, and a broken woman willing to use it.

Well-developed and gripping as Danica falls under the spell of ghostly 18th century plantation owner Gaston, knowing any love between them is ill-fated, the suspense intensifies with her neighbour’s intoxication with black magic, and a fated encounter on Hallowe’en that ends in tragedy. Interesting through the whole book. It took me a little time to get through this book even through it was quite interesting. I enjoy reading books from Alexandrea. This was just different from what i normally read. But it was still a good book from the beginning to the end. The characters were interesting and the story line was unique and suspenseful. I very good ghost story indeed. I absolutely love a good love story between a human and a ghost.I enjoyed that it took place in New Orleans. It added to the story line. This was overall a great well written enjoyable book. It will having you gripping onto it right from the beginning and holding on until the end to see what is going to happen between the two main characters

Do you believe in ghosts? What a spooky but addicting story.

The characters were amazing. I loved reading and getting to know each character. Danica was such a strong and stubborn character which made me love her. And I felt goose bumps while reading about the ghosts.

The storyline was incredible. This story was very well written and I enjoyed every moment of this book from beginning to end. Weis did not disappoint in this new story and I highly recommend it.

Amazing story of love and New Orlean’s paranormal life

Absolutely a 5 star read for me! The characters were so amazingly written, I felt like I was watching a movie at times. When I finished the book, I genuinely missed Danika and Paul and Gaston, even Carl. Lol.

Love, loss & happiness

This is about a woman who comes back to Louisiana to find a life of contentment. She soon finds out she wants more than just contentment. The question is, who will she find what she is looking for with. There are 2 prospects. Which one will bring her true happiness. She also has a gift. She can see ghosts. This brings a fun twist to this tumultuous story.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed reading this book reminded a bit of the Ghost and Mrs Muir. I was disappointed because of the fact it seemed Danica and Paul drank an awful lot. The last 1/4 of the book became very wordy. Still thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Danica lived in a haunted house in New Orleans as a kid. The ghost Gaston talked to her, watched over her and protected her. Sound sorta nice, right? But what about when she was in her early teens and dating? He ran off the boys because he was jealous. Sounds like a a pedophile to me, ick. And now she moves back and they have the hots for each other and he talks about remembering her as a beautiful child, again ick. Yep, pedo-ghost for sure.

And Danica was in an abusive relationship with her ex husband but finally left. Yay for her but no mention of getting counseling or therapy, but she mentions a few times about taking his expensive antique books to get back at him. So adult of her. How about pressing charges? How about letting people know he’s a monster so it doesn’t happen to someone else? Nope! She takes his books and money and leaves the predator loose to hurt other women. Well done Danica! You are part of the problem.

Then there is Paul who she immediately has the hots for even though she wants Gaston the ghost too. So Gaston has a jealous hissy-fit and this makes the super immature Danica pleased became she knows the dead guy wants her bad. Gah!

Gaston shows up on Halloween in human form because why not? They do it all night then he disappears saying he can come back next Halloween. But she goes out with Paul. They end up getting nekid after the second date in which they have sex that seems disturbing for someone who was in an abusive relationship. Again, therapy would help you Danica but you’re an idiot. Oh and of course she thinks she’s in love with Paul almost immediately. Insta-Love... how stupid.

Crap happens, people die. The term black magic is bandied about. There’s a voodoo woman, of course. There’s 3 pages of back and forth between Danica and Paul about “I told you I would come and get you, I didn’t want you riding the street car.” Controlling much Paul? To Danica being a twit “oh I didn’t want to be a bother.” while blushing and fluttering her eyes. Yes, 3 pages of nothing. There’s a lot of that in this book. It’s 214 pages and should have been edited to 150.

This was a trope-y book. Ghosts in New Orleans, check. Pedo-ghost coming to life to finally “have” the then girl/now woman for a night of passion, check. PS. Pedo-ghost used an old dudes body (who also was a wife abuser!) to have sex with Danica but she didn’t know it until later. Gross! Crazy lady next door obsessed with said pedo-ghost using voodoo and black magic for nefarious reasons never expounded upon other than “power”, check. Insta-Love, check. A voodoo lady with mysterious half-answers, check. Murder and suicide, check. A different creepy neighbor that just happens to know anything and everything about ghosts in general, pedo-ghost in particular and ends up being a much smarter, deeper character in the last 8 pages of the book than originally written, check. Wtf? Ghosts “going into the light.” Check. ✅

Please do yourself a favor and don’t read this. I was in the mood for a good ghost story and was highly disappointed by this nonsense masquerading as a book. I won’t read anything else from this author either.

General: I am so incredibly in love with this book! I have given a lo of books 5 stars in the past few months but this is one of the few books that I wish I could give more. From start to finish this book was perfection…minus the ending but that’s just personal preference.

Every detail in this book put you in NOLA. It is my favorite place and I hate reading books that think throwing a few names out makes a book there, this one barely referenced the city and yet it was obvious in every detail where they were. This book also had a spook factor too it that I rarely find. Ghosts started as good and slowly shifted as new ones entered the scene.

The plot itself was wonderful. I think the story was unbalanced though. However, it may have been unbalanced because I became attached to one character over another. It really may have been unbalanced though. The romance and horror were in sync completely. But as the blurb indicates there is a love triangle. I felt that considerable more time was spent with Danica an Gaston (ghost boy) versus Danica and Paul (human/ alive). I loved and hated the ending tremendously and would love to hear what others thought as with a love triangle, some readers will always be upset but it doesn’t change how amazing this book was.

Characters: Danica- Danica was a loveable character but even while I was reading I wanted to hurt her. She was independent and yet completely dependent on the idea of a new man in her life. So much so that she would say the same things to both me about her feelings for the other and it wasn’t about manipulation, I think she was just that confused. I loved her journey and felt she did grow but am still not certain on the ending.

Gaston- Gaston can haunt my room and my body anytime he likes LOL. I’ll admit I can’t recall to much of his physical description aside from his eyes but he left an impression of pure sexiness. A man of the past it was cute watching him talk of things on this side. He had a darker side that I would have wished could have been played out to see him all the way, but as a love triangle it didn’t happen.

Paul- Paul may have been an amazing character. He had all the makings of a sexy man. The looks, the loyalty and the heat in bed. I enjoyed when we got to see his personality, he was quirky. But I felt like he got the short end of the stick and wasn’t fully developed. I would have liked to see more of him before Danica made her choice so I could have an unbiased opinion on which male she went with.

Not just for the memories, but because she left behind something else, her bet friend, a ghost that haunts the home, Gaston. Slowly Danica realizes that she is in love with Gaston, but can she truly be happy in love with a man that can not hold her or kiss her? As The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine unfolds more than just the ghost of Gaston will become evident, and this new ghost is not as welcoming to Danica as Gaston is. What is in store for Danica? Can she survive the ghosts and will she find what will truly make her happy? Alexandrea Weis writes a southern novel, set in New Orleans that resounds with the spirits of the area.

Alexandrea Weis takes the favorite local of ghosts and ghost stories, New Orleans and puts a real life family kind of story into it. Danica grew up and lived here, loved here and lost here. This is where she belongs and where she comes back to when she needs to find herself again. The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine has your typical good ghost and bad ghost, but you never quite know how is good and how is bad to whom, until the very end. Each has qualities that can make them both, but in the end it is what they are willing to give up for others that determines their status. This is a lovely novel that treats you to some local fare of New Orleans that is welcome in any story. Perfect quick novel for those wanting something to read whether you like the romance or not so much, and there are non-believers of the ghosts in the books, so if you are not that into the ghosts, you still might enjoy this book.

Omg...This book was amazing!! I don't think I will ever get tired of reading books from this author!! This is the third book I have read of hers. All 5 stars in my book. The stories are filled with humor, a little horror and a lot of passion. The books I have read so far are based in New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina. I love the way she adds history of the town to her stories. And paranormal activity was in two of them. My favorite line in this book is: “So now I’m a very old cat named Oscar.” He frowned at her. “Why didn’t you just tell him the truth?” “What did you expect me to say? ‘My ghost is pissed off because you’re calling him a sleazeball’? I don’t know who would sound crazier, me or him.”

How much sexiness can a ghost and a girl come up with?!!? Because I was sweating and really the…ah…other parts of my anatomy were on high alert. I was reading so fast to find out what happens. But I want to slow down so I can enjoy it!! She had me crying like a baby!!! There was a little hint at the end of the story that if the author wanting to continue the story or just keep you guessing forever.

In essence this is a love story, but with some serious attitude. It is a unique ghost story snaking through different eras, whilst keeping the story tightly knit and not losing sight of the main characters in the ethereal nature of the storyline.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I loved the way the flavour of New Orleans was introduced into the story without being overpowering, but adding colour and flavour. I also enjoyed the contrast between the previous life in the cottage as a child, where there was no fear involved with the ghostly goings on and the return as a grown up where so many other people’s perspectives intruded on the relationship between Gaston and Danica, which changes everything.

This piece of writing had a bit of everything; love, ghosts, and of course a frisson of fear.
The book finished leaving me wanting more, but I also had a few questions which niggled at me, and I’m not a big fan of loose ends at the end of a book, but that was my only little issue, as I could hardly be separated from my kindle while I was reading it. In the end love conquers all, which leaves a warm glow, however ghostly the story. I guess it’s what we all want.

Did not finish.

This book was recommended to me as I quite enjoy a good ghost story. Even better it was on sale.

But I'm giving up half way through. It's annoying me.

The whole "I'm not good enough for you, but neither is any other man" is irritating. And he's a ghost, okay? He's dead. I find it a bit creepy that we watched over her as a child and now desires her as a woman.

The history of New Orleans back then contrasted with the present is good. I like the interplay of old and current characters and events, but I don't really like Gaston much. Danica, Burt and Claire are stereotypes that could do with more development.

The love triangle thing gets to be a pain too. She meets a living guy and likes him and has passionate feelings all the while the ghost is watching them kiss. So then she likes him, but soon, no she likes the ghost.

Domestic violence is a serious subject and it leaves scars long after it ends. The sex scene seems strange in light of this. Disturbing. The full body bruising and pain after sex was the last straw.

No, there's too much annoying me. I give up.

This story takes place in New Orleans area (French Quarter). I really like this story, great story line ,plot and romance that follows! Danica used to live in a old house in the French Quarter as a child with her mother and father after her mother died Danica and her father moved to Florida. After a nasty marriage she moved back to the french quarter> Enter the ghost Gaston he has known her almost all her life> As a little girl he would tell her stories now as a women he wants her! All of her! she met an old lady named Clair who is kinda of kooky belives in ghosts and tells Danica all about it she meets handsome Paul Clair's son from a dinner at Clairs! They start to fall for each other and Gaston get jelous and goes through desprate mesures to have a full human night with Clair! The story was awsome No disappointments here i got hooked> LOVED IT!!!

OMG...LOVED THIS BOOK! I cried when it ended, I was not ready to let go of Gaston.

The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine was a fantastic read. Alexandrea Weis has created a world that captivates you from page one. I have never been disappointed with any of her books. The characters came to life, grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into their world. I felt as though I was experiencing their trials and victories with them.

This story begins with Danica moving back into her childhood home. This decision was brought on by her desire to reunite with an old friend.

Gaston isn't your ordinary guy. He maybe a dedicated friend, sweet and romantic, but he is also a ghost and willing to do anything to keep Danica in his life.

If a great ghostly kind of romance is what you seek, look no further.

I do recommend this book for ages 18+
