These study guides, part of a 16-volume set from noted Bible scholar John MacArthur, take readers on a journey through biblical texts to discover what lies beneath the surface, focusing on meaning and context, and then reflecting on the explored passage or concept. With probing questions that guide the reader toward application, as well as ample space for journaling, The MacArthur Bible Studies are an invaluable tool for Bible Students of all ages.
John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
as the description states, this book is good for group discussions and as a companion guide while reading through Daniel. It is not a well developed commentary or a study of the book of Daniel. this is more like a booklet. short but comprehensive enough as a beginner's guide through Daniel.
I also have the John MacArthur ESV Bible and this study was not easy, but was easy to follow. I loved that I was taken to other books of the Bible that tied into the book of Daniel.
We completed this study in our small group. Everyone learned a lot. Outstanding features are:
Daniel can be an intimidating book of the Bible, but MacArthur gives enough information to educate, without so much as to overwhelm. Verse by verse commentary is included where relevant to illuminating the text. The text (NKJV) is included in the book, making it highly portable. The questions for personal application and/or group discussion are well written and lack either the cheesy/ irrelevant or the forced nature of other studies.
Later lessons are chuck full of interpretation notes, and focus (with the text) more intensely on prophetic timeline, which can lead to a rather academic experience in the last few lessons. MacArthurs application questions try to create take aways, but some of them in the final sections are a bit forced and not as powerful as the earlier questions.
The prophecy is a lot to chew on... Nonetheless, I think the gold is worth the mining and highly recommend this study as an effective tool.
John MacArthur's study guide to the book of Daniel was insightful and thought-provoking. I liked that he included not only the Bible passages we were studying in each chapter but also the annotations he included which were invaluable to keeping straight what was happening in the passages--particularly in the prophetic material. Probably because its source material is so difficult and hard to understand, the book could be a bit dense at times, but overall it was a good "road map" and I feel that I understand the book of Daniel much better after our women's group read through it with this guide than I did before. Which isn't saying a whole lot. As a group, we kept circling back to the take home message from the book--nothing that is happening is happening without His knowledge and consent and God is sovereign and in control.
This is a decent Bible Study on Daniel. The most helpful thing that MacArthur does is defining words and phrases to the side of the passage as you read. But, the questions do not honestly get you very deep into the passage.
I really enjoyed reading John`s study, very insightful and full of great information, John is very knowledgeable and gives you things to think about. Not my first study of his I have read and won't be my last.
