*This novella takes place during Bluewing, #4 in The Frost Chronicles series*

Adam Brewer has a past, and he doesn't like to speak about it. Few know his journey from refugee to Thorns agent. Even fewer know the extent of his feelings for a certain fierce young woman. Stuck in a prison cell, he must stay sane...and hold on to hope that he'll see her again.

Author's Note: This novella reveals a bit of Adam’s complicated past and contains spoilers through book #4 (Bluewing) of The Frost Chronicles. I suggest reading it after you’ve read at least Frost, Thorns, Weavers, and Bluewing!

(If you have read the entire series, including Aeralis, you can still enjoy this story just fine.)

I've been making up stories since I was five years old, and now I'm thrilled to be able to do it as a full-time job. I have an obsession with dark fantasy, dystopian futures, and Pride and Prejudice-style love stories full of witty banter and sizzling, unspoken feelings. When I'm not writing, I'm creating digital art, reading funny blogs, or watching my favorite shows (which include TVD and BSG). I live with my geeky husband and our two bad cats in Atlanta, GA.

Didn't love the novellas quite as much as the books, but still read them all because I couldn't not know what happened.

YAY! ADAM'S POV!!

This one starts off when Adam was a prisoner in Bluewing and Lia comes to save him. He mostly has memory while he's in his cell and that's how the book starts.
First we have him when he's 10 years old and his story about his past and how he came to the frost, then we have him at 16 when he first meets Lia

LIA WEAVER DOESN’T remember the first time we met, but I do.

Then we have him at 19 when he's a Thorns operative which takes place in the first book where Lia is helping Gabe to the gate.
You can tell Adam has always deeply loved her, I didn't know that in the first book so hearing his POV when seeing her with Gabe was really hard.

The fugitive continued to give me looks of suspicion and mistrust. I ignored him. He was getting under my skin, but I needed to focus. Besides, he’d done nothing to me except enjoy the regard of Lia Weaver, a regard I longed for and lacked. It was not good to hate someone because they had something you wanted.

She loved him.
I breathed out, accepting the truth, hating it.

Poor Adam!! I felt so bad for him. He's had such a hard life and I just wanted something good for him. Had to wait till the end to get that though, Which takes place with him being back in his cell.

If I could just see her again, one more time, I wouldn’t hesitate. I would sweep her to me and let her know exactly how I felt.

And You know what happens next. =)

This tells the story of Adam Brewer.

The first part talked about Adam's origins and his family and was extremely well done and compelling. We learned where he came from, his time in Aeralis, what had happened to his father, how they became involved with the Thorns, how they met the Weavers, and more. I enjoyed it immensely. And it probably should have ended there...

Once they were in the village there was a little bit of new material about his feelings for Lia and how he was bullied and treated as an outsider. But the rest of the story as told from his perspective was really redundant from the books with large swaths of dialogue lifted directly from the books.. It really felt like I was rereading books 1-4 rather than gaining new insights into Adam.

I really think if it had just ended when he met Lia or maybe even when they first came across the village it would have been so much more powerful. So for me it was a mixed bag... Some really great new material and some old rehashed material.

NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I love Adam and I was disappointed with how litle screen time he had in Weavers and Bluewing. So, naturally, I was really happy.

I tend not to enjoy the short stories authors write as addendums to their books, especially from different points of view, because, while they can be fun, they usually don't add anything that substantial, and usually I respect how much they've chosen to reveal and not reveal in the actual book. But in this case, my love for Adam as a character made it really fun to read. It was a bit heavily focused on romance, sure, but I found that I didn't mind so much.

A short story that shows us Adam's life, before he and his family moved to The Frost.
I haven't made any secret that he's one of my favorite characters in the series... in fact, he may be my favorite one at the time! Well, he and Korr!
I like Lia, but honestly I'm sick and tired of her hesitation regarding the resolution of love triangle mess!
As it was, it was interesting to read what made Adam so keen on justice, and why he does what he does in the Thorns.
It was also interesting to see Lia through Adam's eyes.

Oh Adam. You are my favorite of the men in this series. I'm so glad we got to learn more about you. I would have loved to have had even more of his story fleshed out into a full fledged novel of the Frost series completely from his point of view. I'm glad Ms. Ellison did this novella though. So many times I'm always wondering what happened to the other characters in the story, even if they happen to be major characters. In good story writing (which I think Ms. Ellison qualifies for. :) ) I fall in love with the characters enough to want to know "what else happened?!" This was a nice companion to the Frost stories. :)

Adam Brewer is a complex individual with a mysterious past that he prefers to keep hidden. Only a select few are aware of his remarkable transformation from a refugee to a member of the Thorns, an undisclosed organization. Moreover, his deep affection for a formidable young woman remains a secret known to very few. Trapped in confinement, he faces the challenge of maintaining his sanity while clinging to the belief that he will eventually reunite with her.

I always really liked Adam. He was the character I was rooting for. This was a great little look back into his past and what made him the way he is.

I love Adam's character and after reading this book I love him even more! This story is told from Adam's point of view and gives us great insight into his inner most thoughts and feelings. I loved seeing him struggle with trying to hide his feelings from Lia as she already had feelings for Gabe. The book also reveals how he came to be a Thorns operative and how it affected his family. It is truly a wonderful short story for fans of the Frost.

I really liked learning more about Adam's past, but while hearing his perspective on events from other books was interesting, it was also repetitive. I think I would have liked this better had it focused more on his past and the mysterious missions he was conducting, particularly the one that took him away from the Frost at such a crucial moment. Maybe there will be more about it in book five.

Big waste of time. We learn a tiny bit about Adams past then we get to revisit events from books 1-4 but from Adams perspective. Very repetitive
