After a lifetime of running away from spirits, Rachel Mills finds herself chasing them. Someone or something is harassing Manny O'Toole, a local teenage spellcaster.
To complicate things, a mysterious man arrives in town. So naturally Rachel has to find out who and what he really is. Provided she can sneak away from Mrs. Saunders, her 93 year old neighbour, a local senior and troublemaker.
On top of it all, Rachel’s made a decision about Jeremy, the secret love of her life. It’s time to have a chat.
*phew* We got there. All the emotions in one place, as Krista is known for. I laughed and giggled, was ready to lead Rachel by the hand, and was so happy with her, along with the bummer sad parts.
Yes, I love this world and ride with Rachel and all her friend here. Can't wait for more!
****FULL REVIEW**** Rachel is still suffering from the damage the Whisperer caused with his attacks on her in the last book - Dark Whispers. She's seeing more spirits than normally due to the damage and all are reflecting her current mood. She's also fretting over Jeremy, the sexy Mountie she's loved since the first day she meet him. He's been single all summer and spending time with her. She need to confess her feelings to him or move on.
Rachel is not the only one suffering from the Whisperer's attacks. Rachel can feel the darkness surrounding the young Manny, whom she helped save. Manny's troubles are escalating and the dark violent shades are enjoying it. Manny needs more help than Rachel alone can offer.
A new man comes to town. A mysterious one that the spirits don't much like. Javier finds his way to Rachel in this small village of twenty.
*phew* So, where do I start? Goodness. We got there. All the emotions felt in one place, as Krista is known for. I laughed and giggled, was ready to lead Rachel by the hand a time or two, and was so happy with her, along with the bummer sadness too.
Rachel seems to have found herself and a balance in her life with work and leisure here in this little village in Newfoundland. She's even accepting the dead she hears. This is great. Rachel needs a place she can call home with her heart, and this seems to be it. But she has one thing she needs to make a decision on, Jeremy. Tell him and move on? Oh Rachel, how things become complicated. Oh man.
With Rachel in the mind set she is, it seems all the spirits and Mrs. Saunders have the same thing in mind... Well, they make me giggle with the comments they make, and poor Rachel is still single. lol.
Speaking of Mrs. Saunders. For a ninety-plus old woman, she's got some spunk. I love her! She is a hoot as a woman of this age can saw whatever, whenever and get away with it. lol. Then we have our hot Mountie, Jeremy. Oh this boy...so many signals, I don't know what to do with him. We have a surprise here as well. A new character that Rachel's biological mom sends to help, Javier. Mmm, he's a nice new addition to the mix here. He brings a new view to the paranormal world here. Very interesting indeed.
I will say...Salt Shaker. Now, you will have to read the story to understand the meaning behind the joke with Javier and Rachel. lol
This is a novella, but complete with everything you could ask for in a story. The world is building. The characters are becoming more aware.
When you read this series, start with the first novella as each builds on each other. At this point, you need to read Dark Whispers to know what's happened to the characters. But, you'll enjoy them all as you see the characters connect and the story deepen.
Yes, I love this world and the ride with Rachel and all her friends here. I Can't wait for more!
I enjoy this series, hate the year-long wait between books, and loved this book. Although the series is urban fantasy , there's a romantic subplot and it gets ramped up in this this book. I was teasing Krista on twitter about having written a paranormal romance. She's not really a romance writer but she's done a good job in this series and in this book.
Rachel is still healing, physically and emotionally, from the events in the previous book, "Dark Whispers". In addition, Manny, the depressed teen from that book, is still depressed and doing poorly overall. His parents, oh I wanted to smack his parents - smug, condescending, so sure their world view is the only correct one, unwilling to listen to Manny or what he needs. They're fundamental Christians and extremely closed-minded. They love him and believe that they are doing what's best but they really got under my skin. I felt so bad for Manny, having parents who refused to listen and refused to admit that they might be wrong and actually making his situation worse. But Ball doesn't villainize them or stereotype them, which would have been the easy route.
Manny's problems aren't all organic in nature; there are dark spirits trying to possess him and encouraging his dark thoughts. Rachel wants to help him fight them off but his parents are resistant. They believe all spirits are evil, sent by Satan, and they believe that Rachel is evil or at least, corrupted by Satan. It's a mess and the situation gets nasty.
Ball introduces a new character, Javier, who hunts and destroys spirits. This puts him into conflict with Rachel, especially when he goes after Dema, her spirit guide. Can he help Rachel help Manny fight off the dark spirits? Will he? At first, I thought Javier might be a new love interest for Rachel. Rachel has been in love with Jeremy, a local RCMP officer, since moving to Wisemen's Cove several years ago. However, she and Jeremy have only been friends. What happens now? How will this play out? Will Ball torment us by giving us a love triangle? Please spirits, no!
The story is short, about a hundred pages, but we get romance, religion, action, character development, and humor. Rachel is a great character - confident yet unsure, compassionate, snarky, grumpy, loyal, helpful, funny; someone I'd want to know. The ending, oh I was in tears, messy, snotty tears. It's going to be a looooooong year until the next book. *glares at Ball*
If you haven't started this series yet, you're missing out on a great one.
Salt shaker!
No, I won't tell you the significance of salt shaker. Read the book for yourself. :D
I love these novellas. As with the two previous entries in the series, the characters carry the story. Mrs. Saunders is who I want to be when I grow up. Recurring characters Manny, Dema, and Jeremy are also fun to read about again--I am in particular enjoying Manny's character arc. And Rachel...I'm glad to see her growing and exploring her Spirit Caller powers. Other than character development, the story also furthers Rachel's development as a Spirit Caller (how will new character Javier help with that in future stories?) and explores Manny's continuing difficulties of living with conservative Christians when he is interested in the occult. I do disagree with Rachel's assertion that Manny's parents love him. To me, it seems they love Manny as he once was, or how they expect/want him to be, not the Manny that exists and lives with them. I'm anxious to see what happens to him, poor kid. Overall, come for the ghost story, stay for the fantastic characters.
Silly me, I read book 3 in this series before I read book 2, but once I had started, I didn't want to stop. I'll backtrack now. :) I thoroughly enjoyed this installment of Krista Ball's paranormal novellas set in Newfoundland. Being from Cape Breton, "the Rock" (NFLD) is only a hop, skip, and jump (and a seven-hour ferry ride) away, so I loved the touches of familiar dialect and geography. The series' main character, Rachel, is in fine form in this tale and really coming to grips with her abilities as a Spirit Caller. Lots of romance, intrigue, and paranormal goings-on with the always-entertaining and sometimes terrifying spirits who populate Rachel's world. If you like paranormal romance you should definitely check out this series.
This is even darker than the one before, and I am so sorry to see Manny going through all this. Poor guy! But I am glad to see at least a new character because Javier is interesting. And I am glad to see Rachel get to know more of her neighbors, even if "get to know" is not the best way to put it. I mean, she knew them but she is slowly getting more comfortable and she is building new friendships, and this was really nice to see. It is also nice to see that she is growing comfortable with her ability and she is willing to learn more. And the setting... oh gosh, it sounds like Heaven of Earth!!
This series keeps getting better and better! If I had started this earlier I probably would have read it in one sitting.
Love the addition of Javier. He adds a new element to the mix which makes things interesting. Things with Manny are getting tense I liking how it unfolding with him.
And finally Rachel tells Jeremy her feelings. It was obvious something had changed and I'd feel the need to slap Rachel for being a dumb-ass if she didn't work up the courage to speak soon.
Great addition to the series. Looking forward to the next one.
Another great novella! I loved getting to know Dema better. She is a fantastic secondary character and a great companion to Rachel. In this third installment, Rachel gets a terrifying glimpse into how powerful her Spirit Caller abilities can be and it was fantastic.
I gobbled down two of these urban(rural) fantasy novellas last night--I was in the mood for something quick and entertaining and these fit the bill. An extra star for resolving the romantic subplot this novella.
( I read these as a bundle, so same review for books 1 -3) I loved Spirit Caller, so this is gonna be one of those gushing reviews. It’s got parts that are scary, intense and deals with some dark themes, but also much cosy awesome friendships and a dopey crush. I like light with my darkness, and this book shines.
It’s and urban(rural?) fantasy about Rachel, who can see ghosts and has moved to a very small town in Newfoundland, dealing with various ghostly threats to herself and the town.
I got the first three novellas in the series in a bundle: Spirits Rising, Dark Whispers and Knight Shift and they’re so short I’m going to do this review more as if it were one book. The series is complete and the other three novellas are included in another bundle.
Characters
I think the characters are the best thing about the series.
Apart from being able to deal with the dead like it’s NBD, Rachel is the protagonist I’ve related to most in recent memory. There are so many things coming out of her mouth that could’ve come out of mine, though she is a better person.
She really grows a lot, becoming more assertive and accepting of who she is. She’s a great and loyal friend, and so much of her focus is on helping people. She’s really awkward romantically.
Mrs Saunders, Rachel’s 90+ year old neighbour is kick ass. I can only hope to be as witty and confident as she is when I’m that old. She doesn’t take shit from no one and fiercely defends her friends.
Jeremy is a Mountie, he’s dreamy, and Rachel dreams about him a lot. He’s very nice and such a good friend, everyone’s a good friend in this book it’s amazing. Ye Gods that ass
Dema is an ancient ghost that pops up now and then exuding confidence and often a good amount of sass
The relationships
Hmm maybe these are the best thing about the series
Rachel has a great relationship with her (adoptive) parents which I always say we need more of in fantasy. She also has great supportive friends. Strong friendships are very important in Spirit Caller. Even some of the relationships with antagonists develop well.
Plots
Each novella managed to pack interesting plots, intense bits of actions and mysteries to figure out in a very small amount of space. Because it relies on such a strong foundation of good characters and relationships the series is able to tackle dark themes such as death, suicide, depression, the fear of losing loved ones, without it getting grim. There’s a new threat in every instalment, but they are all connected.
Setting
Spirit Caller takes place in a small coastal Newfoundland town, population of 20. As a medium-city girl, I’ve never experienced that sense of knowing everyone and community, but it seems lovely. A bit too windy, but otherwise lovely. Also Krista really knows her food and the cooked dinners she mentions sound so comforting. I’m very concerned about driving in the area now, there’s a lot of talk about looking out for moose.
