Demokratin är en myt

Western intellectuals and politicians are writing and speaking about the triumphs and salvific powers of democracy. About the author

Tage Lindbom (1909-2001) was a Swedish PhD in Political science, who was early in his life the party theoretician and director of the archives of the Swedish Social Democratic Party 1938-1965. He served on public boards and commissions dealing with cultural questions, including the executive board of the Royal Opera. Later in his life he converted to Islam. He became a representative of the Traditional School and the Perennial philosophy. Lindbom has been called "the grand old man" of Swedish conservativism and is the author of more than 20 books on philosophy and religion. He was a contributor to the quarterly journal, Studies in Comparative Religion, which dealt with religious symbolism and the Traditionalist perspective.

Öncelikle kitabın yazarı hakkında 3-5 cümlelik bir bilgi vermek gerekirse; 1960'lı yıllarda İsveç'te sosyal demokrat hükümette çeşitli görevler alan yazar daha sonra sosyalizmin ve planlı ekonominin bir çözüm olamayacağını anlayarak sosyal demokrasiden umudunu kesiyor. Daha sonraları ise seküler/modern ideolojiler ile dinler arasındaki engellenemez uzlaşmazlıklar hakkında çeşitli araştırmalar yapan yazar 1996 yılında ise bu kitabını yayınlayarak kendi finalini yapıyor.

Kitaba gelirsek.. Kitap, "Kim hükmedecek, Tanrı mı yoksa insan mı?..." sorusuyla başlıyor. Lindbom, antik ve orta çağlarda meşruiyetini tanrıdan alan idarecilerin modern çağlarda tanrıyı tahtından indirip onun yerine insanı koyduğunu ve demokrasinin dilemmasının da tam da bu noktada başladığını öne sürüyor.

Liberalizm ve Sosyalizm'in geniş bir özetine yer veren yazar daha sonra liberal ve sosyalist demokrasilerin açmazlarını tartışmaya açıyor. Bunun yanısıra Heidegger ve felsefesinin 2. Dünya Savaşı sonrası demokratik sekülarizasyonun nasıl temelini oluşturduğunu de facto örneklemlerle açıklıyor.

Dürüst olmak gerekirse bu kitap, modern demokrasilere iman etmiş sekülerler tarafından(keza karşıtı olan kökten dinciler tarafından da) postmodernist hülyalara kendini kaptırmış bir adamın bir avuç veriyle ahkam kesmesi olarak yorumlanabilir ancak yine de yazar, itaat ve otorite nosyonlarıyla özdeşleşmiş kudretini tanrıdan alan geçmiş zaman idarecilerinin yerinin seküler gayelerle donatılmış kudretini Leviathan'dan alan yöneticilerle doldurulmasının mümkün olmadığının altını çizerek demokrasinin aslında ulaşılabilmesi en güç ütopya olduğunu samimi bir şekilde vurguluyor.

Ezcümle, modern demokrasilerin asli dayanak noktalarının ve açmazlarının bir şablon halinde incelenmiş bir biçimini merak ediyorsanız bu kısa kitap sizin için güzel bir özet olabilir.

Lindbom rambles on for 130 pages on how man demolishes the Augustinian city of God and vainly tries to establish the city of Man. Democracy is bad because liberty and equality are not mere predicates anymore but the pillars upon which democracy stands. This doesn't work because they're self-contradictory: Liberty is vanity and equality is hatred towards the more successful.

Lindbom makes many bold claims but fails to substantially back them up. What is his definition of "equality"? When did democracy ever ask for a perfect equality is the questions. Democracy asks for equity and equality under the law.

Nonetheless, lindbom provides a striking account on the myth of democracy. Myth, not as in illusion, but as in ideal that man projects unto the world, this separation between the real and the divine. By rejecting God, man builds an edifice to his own pride, which ultimately stands on paltry sticks of hay.
