Ann Wirt was one of the pen names used by Mildred Wirt, who wrote many series books for girls. She is best known for writing many of the early Nancy Drew books, which were published under the author name Carolyn Keene. This is a well-written book that features a spunky protagonist, Madge Sterling, and her partner in crime solving (for this book, at least), Cara Wayne. Madge is smart, analytical, and enjoys solving puzzles, which makes her a good amateur detective. One note: The treatment of the black characters in this book might have been progressive for its time, but it rankles now. I'd recommend this to book to my daughter, but I'd definitely have a conversation with her after she's finished to discuss how blacks are treated, how far we've come since then, and how far we still have to go.
This is a Madge Sterling mystery. Like other books by the author, for example the Penny Parker mysteries, the detective portion is thin. Designed for young adult readers, the story is still compelling and follows an easy to read adventure.
