If you enjoy suspense, romance, humor, and intriguing mystery then follow amateur sleuth Sarah Woods on an exciting ride with her first two adventures in this boxed set. This series is intended for mature audiences.
An Appointment with Murder The first book in the series introduces you to massage therapist, Sarah Woods. While working late one evening at her office, Sarah finds her assistant has been strangled in the short time she was in the back with a client. Who would have done such a horrible thing? Was it a random killing or someone she knew? Although the police are investigating Sarah can't seem to stay out of it and embarks on a journey to find the killer. An Act of Deceit Sarah Woods adventures continue in this book when she decides to work for Carter, the unorthodox private eye from Boston. Sarah must go way beyond her comfort zone as the pair find creative ways to expose a cheating husband, Marty Quinn. When Marty ends up dead, the assignment takes a whole new twist. This is a fast paced, fun mystery read. A great blend of witty dialogue, suspense and enough adult humor to keep it interesting.
Sarah is so real, and there is much in her life that relates closely to my experiences. But I really like how she thinks. I am very curious how her relationships with her husband, with Max, and with Carter will evolve. Even after reading the first two books, I have been surprised by each ending...twisting plots delight me.
The book started out well, but I lost interested right after the receptionist was killed. It's a sophomoric book, and probably at a reading level of eighth grade and felt as if it was written by a mid-twenty year old trying to appear older. I received the first two volumes for free, and I didn't make it through half of the first book.
Sarah Woods Mystery Series (Books 1 and 2) — Jennifer L. Jennings (Sept. 4-9, 2018)
Contains first two books in series: An Appointment For Murder; An Act of Deceit.
Per usual, read a more in-depth review under actual titles. Here are quick recaps and overall rating:
Book 1: An Appointment For Murder 22 chapters Sarah, who operates a therapy massage shop discovers her favorite receptionist, Beth, dead and she looks into trying too figure out whodunit.
Book 2: An Act of Deceit 15 chapters Sarah has teamed up with Carter to help him with some PI work. She discovers she really likes it, but things heat up fast when the last client’s husband turns up dead.
Both of these books are similar but different. I’m glad I had to read past the first book. Though I didn’t like the way the first book came out, I did really like the second book. There are some things I don’t like about Sarah, but the author wrote her fairly realistically. And for that, I appreciate.
Both books are quick reads which can be read together over 2-3 days, or a marathon Saturday.
I have to give this set three stars, due to book one’s two star rating.
Sarah Woods is a massage therapist who is becoming tired of her job, and is facing problems with, Daniel, her straying husband. When Beth, her receptionist, is strangled while Sarah is with a client in the back of her shop, she finds herself embroiled in finding the killer. The second book in this two-book set follows Sarah after she’s agreed to work for the unconventional PI, Carter Peterson. When another philandering husband is struck by a car after Sarah’s exposed him, his wife is convinced that it was murder. She hires Sarah and Carter to investigate, leading our part time PI down a rabbit hole of deceit and betrayal. Sarah Woods Mystery Series (Books 1 and 2) by Jennifer L. Jennings is a delightful addition to the mystery universe. Jennings has created a unique cast of characters and put them in a universe that doesn’t fit the normal stereotype of the genre. These stories deal with adult situations that are only suitable for mature audiences—and, not just in age, but in point of view on life. She takes us into the characters’ lives in ways not usually found in mystery stories, but this is not your normal cozy mystery either. Hard hitting and humorous in places, it’s a perfect book to curl up with along with your favorite libation. Not only will you want to know what case Sarah will take next, you’ll find yourself wondering if she’ll unsnarl the tangles of her personal life. One of the more entertaining mysteries I’ve read.
Above average story hobbled by a flawed main character
Story(s) well put together, good mystery. Problem for me was the main character. Motivation of the main character to investigate was the implied infidelity of her husband. She never checks the reality of the cheating and uses it to justify her own infidelity, which made her a rather unsympathetic character to me.
I really enjoyed getting to know Sarah and Carter. I'm pretty sure it would be better if you took Daniel out of the books altogether because I don't like him, but you are the one doing all this wonderful character creating so I guess you know better than me! But I really like the books and can't wait to read the next one. Keep up the good work.
It's the kind of book that's good to read all cozy in bed, just when you think you figured it out, nope, you were wrong...it's not long and dragged out either, which I liked, it's just long enough, it's worth a read for sure.
While the book moved good and I liked it. Sarah had horny girl syndrome for every guy in the books and all the guys were buff. Weird but it was a good read anyhow
Boring plot, wooden flat characters, unreal story. I think the author would do better with writing a romance. She just isn't a mystery writer. If you want to waste your time - read it. Your avid reader of mysteries.
With death finding her, Sarah gets he nose stuck in somethings that she shouldn't. An almost empty nest has her thinking about life changes. These books have slight twists and the urns and I really enjoyed them.
