I finished my second novel and gave it to people to read. A few said "Oh it sounds like Master and Margarita", so I read it and it was. Absolutely gutted. However, good book, enjoyed it and I suspect I will think about it for a long time. I preferred the first half where it rolls along, the second half is crammed full of symbolism and detail. As soon as I'd finished reading it, I felt the need to read up about Russia during that period. It's a parody of the powers, laws and people of the time and I suspect it will improve with age.

Culturally important, and incredibly popular in Russia. For my taste, too frenetic. It wasn't completed by Bulgakov.

Honestly one of my favorite books, there’s no proper way to explain it in a compact format. It dives into the greedy society in Moscow as well as a troubled writer who finds himself in a mental institution due to his writing. Reflecting on the real life censorship that the author of the book actually experienced in real life.

The best book for me. A book written from excerpts taken from life, a book that combines horror, fantasy, romance, and detective is the best for me. Mikhail Bulgakov was a genius who had a very interesting life outside of books.

This is the kind of classic that tells the story of Soviet Russia much like Dostoevsky does, except someone spiked the tea with absurdism, black comedy, and a healthy dose of the supernatural.

Going in, I expected a book packed with profound insights and deeply complicated characters. Instead, I found a talking cat, the Devil causing chaos in Moscow, and a story that seemed far more interested in entertaining me than educating me. Surprisingly, I wasn’t disappointed.

Unlike books such as Demian or The Brothers Karamazov, I didn’t find many passages that changed the way I look at the world or understand people. The characters are memorable, but I never felt compelled to dissect their psychology for hours after putting the book down. The novel’s ideas are there, certainly, but they never felt like the main attraction.

What kept me turning the pages was the sheer madness of it all. Every chapter felt like Bulgakov waking up and asking himself, “What’s the most ridiculous thing I can make happen today?” and somehow making it work. The gothic atmosphere, the satire, and the absurd humor create something that feels completely unlike any other classic I’ve read.

I closed the book not with an existential crisis or a new philosophy of life, but with excitement and a better understanding of Soviet history. Not every classic has to rearrange your soul. Some are simply there to remind you how much fun literature can be.

Some of the references went straight over my head, seeing as I have not intensely studied Russian history or culture, but a quick wikipedia search whenever you're not sure of something clears it all up pretty well.
This shot straight to my top 3 books of all time, and I'm sure I'll read it plenty of times in the future. Margarita is an amazing character, and the story is fantastic.
