The Billionaire's Baby, book 3 of the Seduced by the Billionaire series (Also goes by the title of "Redemption in Love", AS WELL AS "Pregnant with Her Billionaire Ex's Baby"), was about Gavin Lloyd, a billionaire financier, and his wife, Amandine Monroe Lloyd who, at the time the book started, had been married one day shy of three years.
The book's opening scene was of Amandine in the doctor's office as she learned that she was pregnant with Gavin's baby. Though she was excited about it, she wasn't certain how her husband would feel as they had never discussed having children. Since he didn't have time to talk to her when she called to tell him her news, she decided to tell him when he got home from work. But she was already asleep when he returned well past midnight. So, she decided the following day (which just so happened to be their third anniversary) that their celebration dinner that night would be a great time to tell him he was going to be a father. While he was gifting her a jet of her own, he took a phone call, after which he told her he needed to make an emergency trip to Texas but that he would be back in time to join her for dinner. However, he never showed. While she was waiting at the restaurant for him, the owner of the restaurant (who happened to be one of Gavin's best friends), sat down at the table with her and inadvertently told her the true reason he had to fly to Texas. Gavin's sister-in-law, Catherine, had learned earlier that day that her husband Jacob, Gavin's oldest sibling, had left her. (Apparently, Jacob had married another woman before he married Catherine...and had never divorced her. Therefore, he was a bigamist and she had never truly been married to the man). What made this worse for Amandine is that not only was Catherine HER cousin (who made her childhood miserable), but she was also Gavin's ex-girlfriend whom he almost married (but Catherine had left HIM for his older, more wealthy brother) before he and Amandine married. So through his best friend, Amandine learned her husband had lied to her about where he was going...and why. Amandine left the restaurant and went to her best friend's home because, if she returned home, the place would wreak from the smell of yellow roses...Catherine's favorite flower, which Gavin had ordered for their anniversary. She also didn't want to be there when her husband returned because she wasn't yet ready to confront him about his lies. Upon arriving at her friend's place, she let the entire story flow about how the night went...or didn't go. Unwilling to go home, Amandine spent the night at her friend's place.
As his plane landed back in L.A., Gavin was thinking of how much damage control was going to be needed to make his wife happy, because he knew he had messed up by missing their anniversary celebration. His thoughts were along the lines of giving her a yacht since he had just gotten her the plane. But first, he called his friend who owned the restaurant where they were supposed to have been celebrating earlier and finagled a luncheon reservation out of him. After the call ended, his phone buzzed with a message from Amandine telling him she was staying with her friend for the night. He messaged back an apology for missing dinner and informed her of the new lunch date. The only response he got in return was..."ok".
At lunch the next day, Gavin arrived late...as usual. When Amandine looked down at the table, she noticed he wasn't wearing his wedding ring and mentioned it to him. He told her he lost it. While doing some gardening...for Catherine. When he realized something was wrong, he asked her if she was alright. She started to say yes but then told him the truth...that no, she wasn't okay. He started to apologize and she said sorry wasn't going to do him any good at that point. He told her he knew and then started to tell her what he had in the works, but she cut him off and said she didn't want any more damned make-up gifts. Gavin tried to play it down, saying he was the only person who could do anything concerning Catherine, but Amandine had enough and told him that he would be hearing from her attorney. To say he was shocked would be stating it mildly. He tried to get her to stay, but she threatened to cause a scene. After she left, he went to the bar and talked with his friend, who pointed out to him that if Amandine had spent their anniversary with one of HER exes she almost married, GAVIN wouldn't have been happy to hear about that, who proved his friend correct by scowling at the idea.
Before Gavin could leave the office later, Amandine's brother, Pete (who worked for Gavin), showed up with dinner for the two of them, during which Gavin asked his brother-in-law what he would do if he and Amandine divorced. Pete stated that would only come about if Gavin himself caused the problem and/or initiated proceedings...or if he did something to kill her love for the man...because Amandine loved him so much. That made Gavin question whether or not that's what he had done.
After returning home, Gavin's housekeeper informed him that his wife had moved out, which floored him. He hadn't considered her doing that. He thought she was just throwing a fit to get him to do a grand apology before, once again, forgiving him for his actions. Gavin also figured she would just move to another bedroom while they worked things out. Then she handed him an official-looking envelope that she found on their bedroom floor. As he entered the bedroom, he prepared to be confronted with all of her things gone but was again shocked when he realized she had left...everything he had ever bought her behind, thus eradicating him from her life completely. Amandine had only taken the old clothes she had before they were married. It wasn't until he was undressing that he remembered the envelope he had been handed. He removed it from his pocket, not recognizing the logo, and opened it to find...the sonogram that the doctor had given his wife two days before. Gavin realized that Amandine was pregnant. Disregarding the lateness of the hour, Gavin called his wife and confronted her over the phone about the pregnancy. She told him to meet her the next day...and not to be late. He was, in fact, early for the first time since they had married.
Gavin tried to convince his wife that having a baby changed everything, that it was enough to keep them together. That and the fact that they LIKED each other...which was like another knife in Amandine's back. She said it wasn't enough, that she would not raise her child in a "cold, loveless household". Then he said that if she wanted to leave, fine, but that he would keep the baby once it was born...full custody. She told him the courts favored the mother. He told her to finish eating as she was now "eating for two". She asked how she was supposed to eat when he had just declared war on her. He said she was the only woman he knew "who could equate an attempt at reconciliation with a declaration of war. It's love, not war". At that statement, Amandine had enough and told him to prove it to her. He had to convince her the marriage would work and that she wasn't just staying for the baby's sake...and she said she wanted it in writing. He asked if she wanted an attorney involved, to which she said, "why not?". At that point, he returned her to her friend's home.
Amandine and her friend discussed the conversation she had just had with Gavin. Her friend said she should get the best attorney she could because Gavin wouldn't skimp on HIS attorney, and make HIM pay for it. She then recommended the best, most expensive divorce attorney money could buy. Amandine decided that she would take her friend's advice and messaged him before he could reach home, informing him about just who she wanted as her attorney and that she expected him to pay the attorney fees since he was the one forcing the issue. Gavin "was willing to put up with the farce to placate her", but he was certain of the outcome...she would eventually cave into his demands. It wasn't until he arrived back home and entered his bedroom that he noticed the yellow roses. He recalled his mother saying how she (his mother) detested them because they were the symbol of jealousy...and he then recalled they were not his wife's favorite flower...but that they WERE Catherine's favorite. So he opened the window and tossed them out, making a mental note to inform the florist to never again send yellow roses to his wife.
Less than a week later, Gavin and Amandine met at her attorney's office where he set his plan to woo his wife back into action. Gavin started the conversation by saying he didn't want the divorce, but to reconcile. When asked by her attorney what Amandine would get out of such a thing, he stated, "Avoiding personal defeat. A divorce is a failure". The attorney asked how long the attempt would be, and he demanded a year, to which Amandine objected and said three weeks should be more than enough time. He argued that they had been married for three years which should merit no less than a month per year. They ended up agreeing to four months to attempt a reconciliation...during which Gavin expected full husbandly rights and that she was to be "a loving and agreeable wife". (Let me take a moment here and state that they both were in agreement that Gavin had NEVER cheated on Amandine nor had she cheated on him.) At the end of the meeting, they had agreed that, if things did not work out between the two of them, Gavin would pay for all of Amandine's medical expenses, set up a sizable trust fund for the baby, and he would give up all parental rights (giving her full, sole custody), much to his attorney's disapproval. On his way out, Gavin unhappily told his wife, "you just raised the stakes to the point where I'd lose more than I could afford". (When Gavin's attorney asked him why he wanted to save his marriage so much, all he said in reply was "she's a good wife. Do I need any other reason?". But in his heart and his head, he knew it was more than that).
At this point of the story, Gavin went into full-blown reconciliation mode, with no holds barred. He was 100% determined to save his marriage, even to the point of taking an unspecified amount of time off work to take his wife to Thailand for a "second honeymoon".
Okay, so all of that sets the scene for the rest of the book. With Gavin in reconciliation mode. However, many outside obstacles popped up along the way that tried to hinder the recovery between him and Amandine. With the oldest sibling in the family having "gone rogue" by being outed as a bigamist (and possible embezzler), the family company took a tremendous knock financially, which put the family coffers in a bit of peril for those who relied solely on it for their livelihood. There also remained the shadow of Catherine, who seemed to have disappeared and refused to return phone calls, emails, or any messages sent to her from the family...especially from Gavin, who was determined to get his wedding ring back that he had inadvertently left at her place when he had taken it off to do some garden work for her (who does that?!). However, since she wasn't returning messages, he ordered a replacement ring, because he believed THAT was the entire reason that set his wife off in the first place and that, once it was replaced, she'd give up on the silly idea of a divorce). On top of all that was the pregnancy and the fact that Amandine was at risk for gestational diabetes (and more since her mother had been a diabetic). That caused Gavin no small concern, for he was worried about her health...and not just because of the baby.
While they were in Thailand, word got out about their possible divorce. Amandine's brother called her and told her someone had posted pictures of her, Gavin, and his attorney on their way into the offices of HER attorney...so the world was now speculating on whether or not the divorce would proceed. Amandine's brother was livid and told her she was living in a fantasy world if she was waiting for love. He said she should be content with what she had with Gavin and let the marriage stand.
Gavin knew he loved Amandine...he was just terrified to tell her because he was afraid he would lose her once he did. Gavin may have been an a$$h*le for most of the story, but there was a very good reason for...well...a good portion of it. As you read the book, you'll learn that Jacob (the rogue older brother), was a jerk to Gavin growing up, frequently stealing Gavin's girlfriends with the intent of "teaching him a life lesson" that women will always go for the one who "has more to offer". He had, in fact, stolen Catherine from Gavin for that very reason. Jacob, being the eldest, was also the more wealthy, etc., which attracted Gavin's ex-girlfriend away from him. So Gavin guarded his heart and emotions against ever being hurt again by anyone else. However, that was also his downfall with Amandine, because his love was the only thing she wanted from him...not all the rich toys he could (and did) provide her with.
When Amandine's health took a small nose-dive, the doctor put her on moderate bedrest which caused Gavin to go into over-protective mode and hire more staff to "guard" her in case she was in need. At this point, there was just over a month left in the reconciliation agreement, which Gavin brought to her attention. She wanted to know if he was asking for more time since some unexpected issues had cropped up amidst the plan. He said he was just wondering where they stood at that point. Amandine asked him why he wanted to save the marriage. Gavin gave several reasons: the baby, her complicated pregnancy, and his feelings for her. When she asked him to clarify his feelings, he said, "Affection. The need to care and provide for you and our child". That wasn't what she wanted to hear and was disappointed. So she told him they were at the point where she still wanted the divorce. He argued that she needed him, and all she could say was, "so convince me".
Gavin had to fly across the country in order to get his mother's help with the family and the business. While there, he told her about the baby, too. His mother asked if he would be cutting back on work and he said temporarily. She chastised him and reminded him that babies needed a hands-on father as well as their mom. She also said that she had avoided telling him the same thing when he got married...that he needed to focus more on his wife and that he didn't really need to make another $20 billion to survive on, and that he couldn't continue to act like he was single. She asked him if making more money was worth missing out on spending time with his wife and child...which finally got his attention. She also informed him that hiring more staff to help his wife wasn't what Amandine needed. She needed HIS attention instead.
While Gavin was across the country visiting his mother, Amandine was back home in L.A., dealing with her cousin's surprise visit. The first thing Catherine did was hand Amandine Gavin's wedding ring..."to use against him in the divorce since he had left it at an ex-girlfriend's place after finding out she wasn't married anymore. Not just any ex, but one he almost married". (Talk about sticking the knife deeper into Amandine's back.) She then proceeded to tell Amandine that she should follow through with the divorce because of how ill-suited she was to be the wife of a man like Gavin, that if she didn't tell Gavin what it was she wanted, she should expect him to use her. When Amandine told Catherine they were working on reconciling, Catherine said she needed a different man who could love her more than she loved him...because that's what she was searching for. Then Amandine told her cousin she was pregnant...which didn't sit well with the other woman. But then a thought occurred to her and she asked Catherine if she "wanted Gavin back. The way you did the necklace?". (When they were teenagers, Catherine had given Amandine a necklace, then in front of all her girlfriends in the school bathroom, demanded it back.) But Catherine said no, she didn't want him back. Then with the final jab of, "Just remember: if you don't value yourself if you don't consider yourself precious, nobody else will either", she left...only to run into Gavin on his way into the house. They exchanged unpleasantries, during which Catherine told him that she had visited her cousin to offer "moral support" after learning about the possible divorce, though she didn't tell him the full scope of her conversation with Amandine. She did throw in his face the fact that Amandine had asked her if she wanted Gavin back though. Then she got nasty and said some hateful things about him, including the snippet that he didn't know how to make anyone happy but himself.
Immediately after Catherine's visit, Gavin and Amandine had a final blowout where she poured her heart out and told him exactly WHY she had reached the decision to file for divorce. She told him she had married him because she loved him but that she couldn't continue with the reconciliation...and that he couldn't have the baby. She said she couldn't stay with him because she wasn't happy, that she couldn't live her life being unwanted. He got quiet, then said he'd have his attorney call hers, then left.
Two weeks later, Amandine learned from Gavin's best friend that Gavin had purchased a penthouse to move into and that he had also made some severe changes in his work schedule. He had closed several of the funds he supported, some of his clients had left...and he had made the decision to cut back BEFORE they had made the final split. Although she tried to contact him, Gavin wasn't taking her calls or answering her messages.
The next day she was supposed to meet Gavin and his attorney at her attorney's office to sign the final divorce agreement...but he didn't show up. His attorney did and he told her that Gavin wouldn't be there and that, if she wanted the settlement that Gavin had set in place, she was not to try contacting him, or she would lose everything. Knowing this, Amandine and her friend set up a plan to get Gavin to see her...except things didn't go the way she had planned. The rest of that scenario will be up for you to read, for that leads to the end of the story.
To say this book had it all would be stating it mildly. The angst was high, the heat was hotter than hot, the drama was non-stop, and the emotions were all over the place. After having read most of the other reviews, I had set myself up to hate this book...but I didn't. It ended up being one of my all-time favorites, and I will be adding it to my Keeper for the Shelves collection, and rating it with five stars.
