Clara Dupont-Monod'nun dilimize çevrilen bir önceki romanı Taşların Anlattığı geçen sene en sevdiğim birkaç kitaptan biri olmuştu, bazı kısımları aklımda hala mıh gibi duruyor. Hâl böyle olunca Juette'in Tutkusu'nu da bekletmeden okumak istedim. Dupont-Monod'nun dili yine çok şiirli ve güçlü ancak bu romanda umduğumu bulamadım maalesef.
Aslında hikaye çok etkileyici: 12. yüzyılda yaşamış bir azizenin (Yvette of Huy) gerçek hikayesinden yola çıkarak yazılmış bir roman bu, onun ağzından. Kadının öyküsünü bilebiliyoruz çünkü mevzubahis dönemde onu tanımış ve sırdaşı, dostu olabilmiş olan Hugues de Floreffe bu öyküyü kaleme almış ve metin günümüze hiç bozulmadan ulaşmış. İşte bu metinde anlatılan Yvette'e (ya da Juette) bir ses veriyor Dupont-Monod, bu kez öyküsünü onun ağzından anlatıyor.
13 yaşında henüz bir çocukken, muhafazakar ailesinin zoruyla bir adamla evlendirilen ve kocasının erken ölümünün ardından da onu bu hayata iten geleneklere, topluma, patriyarkaya, ruhban sınıfına savaş açan; genç kadınları evlilikten korumak için çalışan, kısa sürede çok sayıda mürit toplayıp azize kabul edilen ancak sonrasında kilise tarafından yargılanıp ölümden kılpayı kurtulan bir kadının hikayesi bu. (Bu yargılamalar sonucunda yaklaşık 180 "asi" öldürülmüş, Mont-Aimé katliamı diye geçiyor.)
Böyle sıradışı ve olağanüstü cesur bir tarihi karakterin kendisine ses vermek bence müthiş bir fikir, bu ses yer yer çok da güçlü çıkıyor (örn: "Benim adım Juette, artık bir yaşım yok. Alacak bir intikamım var.") ancak romanın bir ritm sorunu var sanki. Gayet iyi yazılmış olmasına ve Juette'in içine itildiği hayatın kendisinde yarattığı acıyı ve öfkeyi hissedebilmiş olmama rağmen bir türlü içine tam olarak giremedim kitabın. Yazar zaman zaman Hugues'e de söz veriyor bu arada ve ilginçtir ki onun ağzından yazılmış bölümler çok daha etkileyici geldi bana.

Ne iyi etmişim Clara Dupont-Monod’a yeniden dönmekle. Onun kaleminde hep bir dinginlik, bir zarafet saklı. Sözcükleri acele etmeden, neredeyse fısıltıyla anlatır hikâyelerini. Taşların Anlattığı ile tanımıştım onu; hâlâ unutamadığım, yüreğimde yankısı kalan bir metindir. Şimdi dilimize yeni çevrilen Juette’in Tutkusu ile o tanıdık anlatı dünyasına yeniden adım atmak hem özlem dolu hem de biraz mesafeli bir deneyim oldu benim için.
Dupont-Monod bu kez tarihsel bir kişiliğin izinden gidiyor. Gerçek bir hikâyeden yola çıkarak çocuk yaşta evlendirilen Juette’in iç dünyasını, erkeklere, Tanrı’ya, kiliseye ve o sert patriarkal düzene karşı yükselen sesini anlatıyor. Juette, sadece çevresindeki dünyaya değil, kendisine biçilen kadere de meydan okuyor. Kendi sesini, tutkusunu, varoluşunu bulmaya çalışırken aynı zamanda bir kadının tarih boyunca nasıl susturulduğunu da hatırlatıyor bize.

Taşların Anlattığı kadar sarsıcı bir okuma deneyimi yaşamadım belki, ama hem yazarla yeniden buluştuğum hem de Juette’in hikâyesine tanıklık ettiğim için mutluyum.

« Le monde vivrait dans le péché permanent. »
Permanent sin? There was a time when the world was going to hell. Scratch that. The question should be, when was there a time when the world was not going to hell?
Clara DuPont-Monod writes an interesting take on women in the Middle Ages. Juette was born to wealthy parents in 1158 in Huy, Belgium on the river Meuse. At age 13 she was married off to an older man, who turned out to be very abusive. They lost their first child in childbirth but a couple of years later, they had a son. Her husband got sick and because of the abuse, Juette wished him dead. She got her wish (no spoiler, this is on the back cover).
Prior to her marriage, she had become friends with a young man Hugues de Floreffe. He chose a different path and became a priest but their friendship grew. He would tell her stories of knights and fair maidens like in La Chanson de Rose or works by Hildegard von Bingham. She had a curious mind and Hugues liked to share what he learned in the library of the monastery.
The story is told by Juette and Hugues. His side of the story is more reserved but he is an astute observer. However because of being a priest, has his hands tied and he tries to understand the policies of the Church. Juette, on the other hand, is fed up with the Church run by men. She is the real rebel and sees things from the perspective of a woman. She has passion.
After her husband’s death, and with the insistence of her father to get remarried, Juette rejects this path claiming it’s just more of the same abuse. She gives up her child, her parents and chooses to join a small group of women who take care of lepers, following in the steps of Saint Julien l’Hospitalier. (See Flaubert). These women reject the church and just want to help the poor. Naive but true to their word.
Finally Juette considers herself “free.” Her friend Hugues is very concerned about her. At first he sees her life as hard but when she starts having visions, he worries about her. Has she crossed that line into madness? However other women begin to flock to her and their numbers grow. The bishop is not impressed since the Cathar movement is growing in in the Languedoc area of France. The pope is even more concerned which spills back onto her friend Hugues.
How can he save his friend when she is a force of her own? She questions religion and only believes in helping the poor. Like the Cathars she feels tormented by a good god and an evil god, the devil. Who will win? Is she blinded by her path? Sometimes these driven people with their own beliefs really don’t see what is around them and this can be their downfall.
Clara DuPont-Monod based this story on the real story Yvette of Huy written by the real Hugues de Floreffe. This book was short listed for the Prix Femina and the Goncourt in 2007.
I was directed to this writer by my GR friend Maria after her review of S’adapter, her 2021 novel on disabilities (won the Prix Femina 2021). Sadly my library didn’t have this book but I was impressed with this historical romance. She has others in this vein.

Après avoir été complètement retournée par « s’adapter » (roman qui continue de me hanter d’ailleurs), il fallait que je lise d’autres livres de Clara Dupont-Monod. Je suis à nouveau tombée sous le charme (l’emprise ?) de sa plume (même si c’est en une moindre mesure que pour « s’adapter »). « La passion selon Juette » est un court roman, et pourtant il y a tellement de thèmes abordés, tellement de questions posées (et quelques points d’histoire également) qu’il serait difficile de parler de tous les sentiments qui m’ont traversée pendant sa lecture. Et puis Juette est une heroïne aussi atypique que bouleversante. « On ne peut pas être aussi poreux vis-à-vis du monde sans y laisser un peu de soi. »

Je crois que le seul intérêt pour les questions féministes et leurs matérialisations à travers l'histoire ne suffit pas pour apprécier ce court roman. Il faut peut-être un certain degré de fascination pour "Que signifie Dieu pour les gens ?". Ça tombe bien, je partage ce genre d'obsession. Et puis, j'ai adoré l'épaisseur de l'écriture du premier segment, où se tisse la magie du rapport de Juette à la nature et aux histoires.

A book about the situation of women in the middle ages (forced into marriage at 13, not allowed to think or ask questions that might upset the church etc.) Juette is one of them and even if the story is beautifully written and we feel Juette's pain, her torment, I could not really like that book. It is just too slow, and there is not enough to keep me really interested.
