The Wrong Word Dictionary: 2,000 Most Commonly Confused Words

Rate this book
Even good writers sometimes find the right word elusive. Or is it illusive? The correct usage for more than 2,000 words that people commonly misuse is provided in this concise and accessible handbook that assures, insures, and ensures that anyone who wants to communicate accurately and effectively chooses the right word every time. Arranged alphabetically in pairs (or threes when appropriate), entries are carefully explained with a sentence that illustrates correct usage and cross-referenced to ensure that readers find, for example, boycott, even when they look up embargo first. Two dozen cartoons by Argentinian illustrator Santiago Cornejo (Corne) humorously clarify confusing distinctions between words and make this a fun reference for all word lovers to enjoy. Dave Dowling has taught technical writing seminars at corporations and universities for 25 years, including IBM, LexisNexis, Lockheed Martin, and Pepsico. He is a member of the Society for Technical Communications and the Society for the Preservation

Mark Twain had said that, “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter – ‘tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.’

Unlike math and science, writing has very few absolutes. To that end, we’re faced with making choices, and many times those choices are word choices.

Many writers are confused about words that sound and look alike. They may rely heavily on spell checker. However, the computer can only guess. You must be sure the word is the one with the sense you intended, so you won't confuse your reader. Anytime you're not sure what a word means, look it up in a dictionary for both meaning and to see how it is used.

Though not inclusive of all word pair mistakes, this book speaks of the common word choices that chalenge us every day.

This book consists of more than 900 entries and the meanings of more than 2,000 individual words or phrases.

Much of the content is based on word problems.

A good primer for students and teachers alike !!
