Firts of all, let me give you a piece of advice: do not read this book if you don't have the next one in the series! The ending have a serious cliffhanger!!!
OK, now to review.
The book is really interesting, even if I don't particularely like the first person narritive and here the tale is told by the heroine, Grace. And here it works very, very well.
I liked the insight on Grace's toughts and feelings. Sometimes they were heartbraking, sometimes stupid, sometimes courageous - a wide range! Grace is dying and she knows it, but she doesn't want pity, or compassion.
Here the time-travel component is done very cleverly: we, through Grace's toughts, are not sure if the whole staff is the product of her dying brain, or if it is real. She disappears from nowdays and plops (in the nude!) in the past and vice-versa.
I loved how the medieval life was treated here. They were not nice times and you really get the feeling! The smells of breath, rotting teeth, unwashed bodies - it's all present and I immagine it was just like that!
We have also a paranormal element in the person(s) of Roman and Viktor. A highly unusual vampires! They walk in daylight, do not fear scared places, are not rich, but they are beatiful (and they smell nice!), mesmerizing, they drink blood (but do not kill if not provoked), they are very strong and quick and live a long, long time.
I particularely like the discussion Grace and Romand had about what is true and what is false in the vampire lore. When Roman ask her why he should be afraid of God. It was such a wonderful point of view and I could get why an almost immortal vampire would think like that! Great!
There was some instances where I didn't like how Grace was acting; it was almost TSTL, but I could condone it because she's not sure it's real.
The book end very abruptly and nothing is explained or solved! I must read the second one! :D
Grace came home to die. What she didn’t know was that coming home would also give her a chance to live a lifetime of love in her dreams. State of Grace by Elizabeth Davies defies genre lines, part historical romance, part time travel and part paranormal romance.
Was it the drugs that induced Grace’s lifelike dreams? Follow Grace as she goes back hundreds of years only to meet a handsome, hulk of a man, Roman. They have nothing in common, except that they each are creatures of fairytales and fantasies. Grace is a time traveling woman whose life is nearing its end as the tumor grows in her brain. Roman is a vampire, addicted to blood and will probably life forever.
Imagine trying to communicate in modern day language with that of almost a thousand years ago! Still there is something special between these two that brings them together out of all the people throughout time. I fell in love with Grace’s attitude, her strength, her wit and the acceptance of what life has dealt her. Alone in a strange time and place, I loved how she refused to stand down to a man! Can you imagine the culture shock that Roman felt? This mere human woman seemed to leave him a little lost and more vulnerable than his species was used to. Together they found love, the joy of sexual expression and the feeling of being complete, once again.
Elizabeth Davies has written a beautiful, yet fun tale of love, and adventure for a woman who has little left to face in this lifetime. Were these lifelike dreams real or were they a gift from the Fate that has dealt her her death sentence. Could Roman be more than a dream to fulfill her need for love? Fabulous characters, atmosphere and just the right touches of humor and heat. Seriously, can you imagine living in a world where bathing happened occasionally, indoor plumbing was non-existent and food came to the table still on the hoof? How about trying to communicate your needs regarding basic bodily functions when there is a communication barrier? Ms Davies built a tale that could have dwelt on death, but instead used fantasy to expand on the possibilities in life... and she did so while being thoroughly entertaining! Loved it!

Series: Resurrection - Book 1 Publication Date: January 14, 2014 Publisher: Elizabeth Davies Genre: Paranormal Romance | Time Travel Print Length: 291 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
Think of the Time Traveler's Wife, told from the point of view of the time traveler, who travels throughout the very long life of a vampire.
Grace, our heroine, has been diagnosed with brain cancer. She's tried chemo and radiation, but her did not respond to treatment. Now she is 27 and returning to her parents home to die
Grace has found peace with her diagnosis, and has told few people outside of her family about it. She wants to live the rest of her life without pity.
As the tumor grows, Grace starts to experience hallucinations. She is naked, in an unfamiliar place, and no one speaks her language. One man is consistently there. After several hallucinations, they begin to speak in English, and she learns the man's name is Roman.
When Grace comes out of her hallucination, she has the injuries she obtained during it. She finally realizes she isn't hallucinating, but time traveling.
Grace is an excellent character. She's a great balance of strong and vulnerable. She is more than her diagnosis, but she does struggle with her mortality and that she will be leaving her family behind.
It's frustrating reading about someone going back in time and no one questioning their accent, lack of connections or family, etc. This book shows a realistic picture of what it would look like if a modern women traveled back in time. They would be thought of as a demon or witch. Grace struggles to stay unnoticed and still faces a lot of suspicion.
The book has a few grammatical errors that stood out to me. This book has a slow start, and some of the time travel can feel repetitive.
I wouldn't say this book ends on a cliffhanger, but it is not a stand alone. Grace and Roman's story continues in two more books.
I really enjoyed this book and will be continuing the series to see how Grace's story continues.
4.5 stars. I loved it! Its a beautifully written historical romance with a paranormal/time travel twist. I was drawn into Grace's world from the first page, and felt for her having to deal with a fatal illness. She was both captivated and terrified by Roman and his medieval world. I can see why Roman was intrigued by her - she was so very different from any other woman he had known and her knowledge of the future (our present day) would be fascinating. I loved the contrast between modern day & 12th century - it certainly highlighted how low women were on the social scale back then and how limited their choices in life were. I love Ms Davies writing style - it painted a clear, detailed picture of Roman's world - the beautiful countryside as well as the harsh and often brutal lives of its people. I am so pleased that the next book is published as I desperately need to know what happens to Grace.
I was debating two stars for the comedic value, but being the star rating already seems ridiculously high, I just can't... The plot sounded interesting, and I thought it was worth a shot for free on Amazon. It was, if only to laugh at how bad it was.
The editing wasn't there (which I sort of expect from eBooks), and there were times that sentences got completely muddled by a lack of commas or an excess of them. I love the Oxford comma, and I think its use could have clarified some sentences. Some of the descriptions made no sense to me in context (unless the author finds children sexy...???). It seemed sort of stream-of-consciousness-y with vocabulary brain farts (Like "six-monthly" checkups and "did a fade out in reverse") and pointless asides in parentheses. It was comically bad between some of the sexy words (like "crotch" and 'folds of skin'), the repetition and excessive explanations (because me 2 stoopid 2 make pictur in hed and remember stuf), and all of the places I inserted "hubba hubba" or "giggity" without actually detracting from the cheesiness of what was already written. Overall, it felt like somebody told a 15 year old that she was a great writer, so she wrote erotica.
For example:
"I had a ridiculous urge to touch his lips. With my own." Hubba hubba
"Anyway, I was cold. Really cold. Except for that rather feminine part. That bit was hot... Really hot." Giggity giggity goo!
"I had ended up looking at the same place on him as he had been staring at on me (his crotch). And boy, I could tell he was all in proportion and then some." Giggity!
"Their heads swivelled towards me as one, like wolves scenting blood, or more accurately like the two Raptors in Jurassic Park, the ones the children hid from in the kitchen." So much was clarified by the two descriptions! Much benefit! Wow!
"I was so hungry I would seriously consider eating chicken's feet (long story involving a Philippine friend and the things she considered to be normal cuisine)." Oh, really? I'm so glad you vaguely explained this weird choice of wording.
"I really was turned on. It was definitely a reaction to Godfrey's attack" where he was beating the shit out of her in an attempt to rape her. Hawt.
"I could see slivers of onions and diced carrots, and slices of swede and my mouth flooded with saliva." Andyeah, and there was food andandand...
I have so many more hilariously bad quotes highlighted on my Kindle, but you can read and enjoy them all yourself. (Just don't read this whilst high. All of the laughing will probably make your stomach and face hurt.)
The story also starts off repetitive as hell. (This part may be sort of a spoiler, I guess..?) The first few times she goes back, it's the same thing: go back in time, find Roman, almost fuck, wake up. Also, she is great at reminding you that Grace is afraid... But so full of lust... But so scared... But his junk is fucking huge... But scary! I have no idea how people think the ending is this crazy cliffhanger. It's not. It wraps everything up and tells you to read the next book. The end.
Also, what the hell is up with the covers? Why are the three covers seriously just a sequence of Roman slowly turning around? Just... What?
This was way more fun to make fun of and quote to my friend than to actually read and take seriously.
I loved this book! Elizabeth Davies is a wonderful author! I loved how she brought the story together, it was so heartbreaking, dangerous and romantic all at the same time. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next!
When grace is told she only has a few short months left to live, she moves home to be with her family for her final days. Lost and not really sure how to go about dieing gracefully she spends a lot of time thinking about how much she misses her life as a pilot and soaring among the sky.
When strange things start to occur and grace starts loosing time, time she spends in another time and another place unknown to her, she at first attributes it all to the brain tumour. The visions start to last longer and to become more real, and grace finds herself falling for the handsome and dangerous Roman, who isn't altogether human. She finds she is traveling back in time and the more she does it the more she is starting to fear that it is real.
This was such an awesome story! my favourite character was Roman. He brought the story to life. He was such a contradictory character saying one thing one min and doing the opposite the next...lol...I love that the book went back to castles and nights it gave grace a disadvantage of having to play a new role in society and it also gave Roman a disadvantage for he didn't know how to deal with a girl of the future.
This was one of those books I simply devoured. I'm so glad the other books in this series are already available. It was well worth its current $2.99 listing price. I started book 2 immediately upon completion. This is must read for paranormal lovers. It has it all and then some. I loved the originality. It definitely not your usual paranormal read that feels like something you’ve read before. This is in a class of its own! To say I'm impressed would be an understatement. It held me captive the entire read. The character depth was spot on, and the plot was fast paced and exciting.

State of Grace was fabulous! I was very interested when I read the info on this book, and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. It was so descriptive, and I was just in awe with the amazing details. I felt like I was right in the middle of the book, and I just couldn't get enough! The beginning is a little slow, but it was very helpful when you get deeper into the book. It was sad thinking Grace was just coming home to die. She had excepted her fate, and was putting on a smile to not upset her family. It just didn't seem like there was a lot of fight in Grace after she lost everything she had in life. Her dreams. But soon she is swept up in this new "vision, or dream," and she has something to look forward to, to live for. She meets the savage but extremely handsome Roman, and she has a reason to live. But this book isn't like a lot of books today were the girl meets a dreamy guy, and all of her troubles vanish. They face many troubles ahead, and you just can't stop reading! The spicy, and extremely wild events in this book leading up to the end will leave you wanting more! I look forward to continuing this series, because I honestly have to know what happens to Grace!
Very well written. Through most of the book I completely forgot Grace was dying, and was just lost in the amazing story. I would highly recommend this book!

This book will hook you in from the very first line! It is possibly one of the strongest opening phrases I have seen in a long time ... and I read a lot of books!
Just when I think I have probably read pretty much everything in the world of vampire fiction an author comes along and takes me somewhere new.
This book has a little bit of everything and manages to merge it all seamlessly and still leave you wanting more. Don't let the "romance style" cover fool you. This is a story that will transport you through time .... literally. The characters are vibrant and unique and at times your heart physically aches to make things easier.
I have already chased down book 2 and can't wait to see where the story goes. I certainly know where I WANT it to ... but I have long since learned that authors sometimes have different ideas,
A solid 4 star read ..... if we had 1/2 stars I would probably be tempted to give it 4 1/2. Vampire lovers should definitely check it out!

I wish I could give partial stars... If I could I would give this book a 4.8 or maybe a 5.5, the difference being if I felt "challenged" or CHALLENGED! I enjoyed getting to know Grace and Roman here. The plot line was a bit different from any I had read or hard about before. A woman with an "expiration date" dangling over her head goes back in time.... This book has some eroticism, romance, history, current events, science.... (Ok so the science is mostly Grace trying to explain stuff) The book captured my attention so well I actually finished it a few hours ago... I spent an hour telling my husband about it and then started reading the next installment before I decided I better write my review before I slipped and told you Elvis is a vampire.. Oops! Just kidding, that does not happen until book 5.... Kidding.... I recommend this as a good read, has some sex scenes and violence so not really meant for the faint of heart... (My 20 year old daughter no, my 17 year old cousin would be a big YES)

I loved the State of Grace. It reminded me a bit of the Time Traveler’s Wife, but it’s still good. I love the concept and the flow of the story. At first I was confused on some parts but as I read more and more I got to have a hang of it.
The characters, Roman and Grace, their character is unique. I love how the characters have their own interesting traits. Roman, he may be ruthless and vicious sometimes but I love his sweetness and tenderness towards Grace. He’s easy to like despite his sometimes monstrous ways. Grace, despite her condition I love that she’s mindful to the feelings of the people around her. For me, she’s not selfish and that’s what I love about her.
The story, loved it. The concept is good and I love how the author made the story interesting. The way the events of the story blended is good. I love how the story gets exciting as the story goes by. The ending of the story is good. I can’t wait to read more of this series!
This book was sent to me by the author to read in exchange for a review.
Whenever I read a genre of book that is different from what I normally read, it takes me awhile to get into the book. I thought that with this being a paranormal book, it would take me a while. It took maybe 30 minutes to be hooked and I had to read all three books right away. I loved this twist on the vampire legends. I think that the tumor does have something to do with Grace time-traveling but as to why she keeps showing up only where Roman is remains a mystery. Grace feels that pull to Roman when she first briefly meets him but is terrified at the same time. As each meeting progresses his understanding of her language, it makes for some funny conversations. Grace is unable to be enthralled by Roman but others are unable to enthrall her is also a mystery, to both all parties involved. When this book ended, I had to start the next one right away. Thank goodness I had it so I did not have to wait!
"I came home to die." Wow! What a way to open a novel. From that first line, I was hooked. I couldn't put it down and soon I was into the second book, "Amazing Grace" and then number three, "Sanctifying Grace".
Elizabeth Davies writes a very good book - three actually in this case.
I adore vampire love stories and I enjoy a good time travel romp too - put the two together and you've got my attention - but I've never read a series with quite as many twists and turns and unexpected happenings as this trilogy. And they were all so well done I didn't get lost once despite our heroine, Grace, jumping back and forth between centuries every few chapters.
If you love a good vampire romance then you have to read "State of Grace". I am pretty sure, like me, you'll be into book three before you even know what's hit you.
I’m so happy to have stumbled across this book. I immediately fell in love with the aptly named Grace, a young woman battling cancer. She has exhausted all options and has come home to a small town in Wales to die. She faces this hurdle with dignity, courage, humor, and, above all, grace.
When Grace begins to have hallucinations, she suspects her brain tumor is growing. When the same man continues to appear, Grace worries she may be losing her mind.
All of the characters in this book are fully developed and intriguing, but it is Roman, the enigmatic man of Grace’s dreams that is unforgettable.
Ms Davies has given us a new twist on a paranormal time travel and I can’t wait to see the next book in this series.
State of Grace....where do I begin! This story had me wanting more. This book had me captured from the first chapter. Poor Grace an her unfortunate health but leads her to a world of love and new understanding of another world! Her dreams, or so she thinks have created a world way before her time. The characters and events leave you wanting more. The settings an the description of the places and the scenes are greatly described. Even coming and going from now to the past, Elizabeth Davies kept me entertained. I never lost interest. She kept you wondering what was around the corner. I can not wait to read the next book in this series. Grace and Roman have me hooked!! I will definitely pass this book along to many people and will be reading it again very soon!!
So far, a quick read. Enthralled is the one word I must use to describe this book. Read it in one setting and the second one, too! A young woman travels back in time several times after a recent diagnosis of brain tumor. She meets someone and falls in love, but never knows when she will, see, him, again. How disconcerting! I had to read to the end to see what happens and then had to,start the second book. I will, leave book,3 for another day. Needless to d Say, I loved it!
I was given an arc of this book by the author to review. All I can say is wow...I need way more than five stars for this book. It was by far one of the best books I have ever read. It kind of reminded me of Outlander, but with a vampire instead of a highlander. I loved this book and cannot say enough about it, I couldn't put it down. As soon as I sign off my computer I will be picking up my ereader and starting book 2!! Thank you so much for writing this book.
While the premise really intrigued me, the execution was very different from my expectations. The extreme cliffhanger ending made me scream. Authors, please stop doing this! It doesn't make me want to read your next book but rather to NEVER buy anything you've written ever again!!!
State of Grace is the story of a young Welsh woman who is suffering from terminal cancer. The tumor in her brain has set off a series of hallucinations which has her questioning her own sanity. They are so real to her that whatever afflictions she suffers in them is felt in her waking life.
Grace's story flip flops between the drama in her hallucinations, which takes place in early Medieval Wales, and her waking reality, which takes place in the present. Grace, whose romantic life is shattered with the news of her impending death, comes home to die defeated and resigned.
I found this story quite entertaining but it was no different from many of the paranormal romances that are inundating bookshelves. There was some campy humor that gives us a glimpse of Grace's quirkiness, but doesn't do much to further the plot. This ebook is riddled with so many typos, grammatical errors and misspelled words that it detracts from the story. The author should also take the time to find out how to spell real celebrities' names if she is going to mention them in her story. It's Bruce Springsteen, NOT Springstein. Being from America, I also did not understand some of the cultural colloquialisms in the book and our author does not take the time to explain it to us.
Grace is not one of the brightest apples to fall from the tree. She seems to ignore the obvious until it is spelled out to her. She spends most of the novel being cold and hungry, and her hero is too removed from reality to see to her basic needs. He is one dimensional and there is NOTHING appealing about him except for the raw sexiness his author describes him as having. I just see a "You Tarzan, Me Jane" relationship. Grace is said to love him, but I don't see how she can love such a flat, uninteresting creature. Sorry, Ms. Davies, I needed to feel excited about Roman and Grace's relationship and there was not enough reason for me to believe in him.
That being said, this series has promise if some of the frailties can be worked on. This novel almost single-handedly redeems itself at the end when Grace's attention falls to her mother and how her death will affect her. The love that our author pours into this small section is palpable and moving. That is what I would like to see in Roman and Grace's relationship--the life and death magnified times two. I need to get lost in it, believe it and grieve in it. Right now, it's not real enough. I need a reason to continue on to book 2. I really want to like this series.
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Wow! I am truly impressed right now. It is true, I have read my fair share of vampire novels, but never have I enjoyed one as much as I did this time around. It was so much different from the "usual" vampire story that it had me intrigued.
The story follows Grace, a twenty-seven year old dying of cancer. She begins having "visions" due to her brain tumor but really she is time-travelling into the past where she repeatedly comes across the same mysterious, gorgeous man by the name of Roman.
Now, now. I know what you are thinking. Time-travelling? Really? How do vampires and time-travel go together?
Well, cast those horrible thoughts away. Seriously. Throw them aside. Because this plot works. For real. I don't know how it works. I'm still stunned with how well it worked together, but it did. And that's all that matters.
I came home to die.
Bam!!! First line of the book! If that doesn't draw your attention there must be something wrong with you. I was immediately drawn in.
Admittedly, it took me about twenty-five pages to truly get into the book, but once I did, I was hooked and the plot just got better and better. I know that was due to the "time travel" or whatever you want to call it. I mean, Grace's life in the "real world" was interesting enough, but her traipses back in time were even more fascinating what with all the mystery as to how it was occurring and who she was seeing...Roman to be exact. He's like this scary mysterious guy who is both frightening and beautiful at the same time. And you know what happens when a girl meets a hot guy...
Anyway...
The visits back in time were my favorite part about the book. I thought I didn't even like time-travel! Go figure.
I am now totally excited to read the next book! Can't wait to find out what happens next!
(Also, can I just quickly mention how tragic it is that our main character Grace is only 27 and dying of cancer. It makes my heart break.)
Shout out to Elizabeth Davies! Thank you for the book! I loved it!
*Ms. Davies gave me a copy of this book for free, in exchange for an honest review*
I devoured this book, like a fat kid would chocolate cake! I read it in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I was intrigued. I needed to know how this was happening.
Grace is a pilot, a daughter, a friend, a lover, and a cancer patient. She has come home to her parents farm to die. She can no longer be a pilot, due to safety concerns. On a hike Pen Y Fan, which I did look up, she has a spell. She is shot back in time, to dark/savage times where men are brutal and powerful. It is there that she meets Roman for the first time. Then just like that she is back to present day, wondering what the hell happened to herself. Through the days that follow, she has more spells and meets up with Roman again. Learning more about him. That she has seen him in several different time periods and he is always the same. How can that be? Why isn’t he aging? It doesn’t matter Grace and Roman have a connection. A bond. What is like seconds in her life, is days, weeks with Roman. Will her future self die? Will her past self die? Will she eventually be with Roman?
This book sweeps you up in the first chapter. You feel terrible for Grace. Her boyfriend left her, her friends don’t know about the cancer. They just know she came home. I found it odd, that the friends don’t question her more about being home. Her mom smothers her with love and protection, but that’s what mom’s do. I love Grace. I love that she has accepted her life and knows that life will go on without her. She is a realist. Roman makes me nervous. I wanted more from him, I wanted him to be what I’m use too – I don’t want to ruin it for you. He was dangerous, he was rough, but with Grace he was kind, gentle and loved her – when she was there.
I am anxious to read book 2 and 3, I need to know what happens to Grace and Roman. Book 1 left you with a cliff hanger that will make your jaw drop and your heart leap into your throat.
This paranormal romance is an emotionally gripping and intriguing adventure through time. With only a few months left to live, 27 year old Grace returns to her home town of Brecon and suddenly finds herself catapulted nearly 1800 years in the past where she becomes involved with the wickedly handsome vampire, Roman.
This steady paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on shivering in suspense throughout the story as Grace tries to determine whether what she experiences in the past is indeed real or just a hallucination. The author describes the scenes with well written details that capture the imagination and has the reader feeling as if they are indeed returning to the past with Grace. The characters are strong, compelling and easily related to.
The attraction Grace feels for Roman is complicated because she’s not sure he’s real but as the story progresses so does her feelings for him and now she’s determined to love him even if it is only in her mind and the passion and sex is hot and steamy whether it is imagined or not. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Grace’s situation emotionally grips the heart and the drama and suspense draw them deeper into the story and well Roman certainly arouses curiosity… among other things.
The author has created a fascination time travel romance with some novel vampire elements that adds some spice to the story. The author blends the 12th century in with the present making the transition easy for the reader to follow and while the story is not fast paced it keeps the readers enthralled and determined to find out what happens. Grace also finds herself in some complicated situations due to the time period that provides some humor and excitement. Being the first in a trilogy, this story ends on a cliff hanger and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
2.5 at best. If only the author had put as much time and emotion into the rest of the book as she did into the cliffhanger ending, it had the potential to have been a great book.
The premise of the book had me hooked early on. I love time-travel stories, and this one was pretty unique... I think. It's not done, the time-travel aspect hasn't even been explained yet, so actually I have no idea if it really is actually unique. Thus my issues with the book...
Are we supposed to believe it's real, or a dream, or a hallucination?? It's very wishy washy. ('he's the only man I've ever loved, yet, wait I don't think this is actually real..')
Good idea, but if I'm being honest, poor writting. Though I hate reading this in a review myself, I can't help think it: How are there so many 5 star reviews???
I downloaded this book for free, and don't feel it's worth buying the next SEVERAL books to get answers to everything left unfinished.
On a side note, I'm a fan of paranormal novels, especially those with werewolves, but on a friend's urging, decided to try reading more Vampire stories.... this right here almost lost me:
‘You have walked this earth much longer than I, trawled the depths of humankind, and you have never met any others. There are just humans and us. No fairies, no pixies, no werewolves. Just us.’
Yeah, don't like it. It irks me to read it even now. Haha.
This is the first book in the Resurrection series. This book is an interesting spin on the supernatural. I thought the main character, Grace who is only 27 years old was going to be coming home to take care of things before the end, but boy did I get a surprise. This was like the Time Traveler's Wife meets the Vampire. Grace has a brain tumour and was only given a few months to live. She experiences extreme headaches and is suddenly transported back in time nearly 1800 years into the past Grace experiences the differences first hand of what living in the past means.
How well do you know your history? Would you be able to clean and cook in the early 1800s? I know that I would definitely struggle with knowing my place and being able to take commands and like it. Don't even go there with attire. Do you know how long it takes to lace up a corset and put on all those petticoats? No, thank you! What would you do if you were to time travel and end up in another year butt naked and not knowing what year it was? How would you acquire clothing? How would you know what year it it? This book was great to discuss and play what it? with! I even spoke to my kids about time travel, as we had all just watched Peabody and Sherman in the theatres, so they understood time travel. It was very well written and I cannot wait to read the sequel!
It's been a while since I've read such a well crafted and enjoyable book as this. I'd been warned in advance that the book would be "too girly" for me, and to be honest if I'd seen it for sale I'd have walked past it - but as the author was kind enough to give me a free copy for review I felt I should open it and see how I got on. I'm quite serious when I say the book was un-putdownable, and I was drawn into the story from the very first pages.
I wouldn't be recommending this book to my male friends, if only to avoid some odd looks, and I'm sure they're not the target audience anyway, but in many ways that's a real pity. Outside of the "girl meets handsome boy and blood rushes to her unmentionables" story there's a fabulously atmospheric tale, set in a beautifully recreated medieval atmosphere. The book is at its strongest when the author describes the settings, characters and intrigue of Lord Brychans court, and the way she unwraps the background to the mysterious Roman helps to avoid the cliches that plague similar expositions by other writers. I enjoy reading historical fiction, so I found the cutbacks to the use of modern language by the lead character a bit jarring, but that's a minor quibble.
The author gave me a pdf copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb held a good bit of promise, so I was excited when the author contacted me about reading her book. I'm a fan of paranormal romance, particularly of the vampire variety, so this book seemed to be right up my alley.
The story had a great start:
Terminally ill, Grace, with an inoperable brain tumor seeks solitude back at home with her family. She's unexpectedly thrust into the past several times...each time butt naked (I found that odd but funny), and into the arms of Roman...aka an Adonis vampire in the flesh.
About a 1/3rd of the way in, the book's pace turned a little too slow paced for me, but I continued on. I was glad I did. The pace picks up in both romance and action, making it page turning worthy.
I'm looking forward to diving into book 2, AMAZING GRACE. Book 1 leaves Grace back in her time, back to intolerable headaches, and without Roman. I'm ready for the promise of more adventure and romance where Roman and Grace are concerned.
Grace Llewellyn lives in Brecon Beacons and has inoperable tumor near the brain stem. She returned to her family farm where she's pretty much a night owl. Then crazy dreams in which she ends up naked with no memory of how she got there in the person. She sees tall, dark, and deadly stranger. Deadly stranger is named Roman but has no way to communicate with Grace. Grace gets very little warning before the dream happens. Grace is startled to back in the same room as deadly stranger. Deadly stranger calls Grace "Eryres". They soon discover a way to speak with one another. Can Grace figure out what is going on with her? Will she be attracted to Roman? What will Roman do? Your answers await you in State of Grace.
I loved that this wasn't the traditional vampire story! I loved Grace's interactions with Roman! Roman is super sexy and total alpha male. I thought the characters were rich, bold, and imaginative. The story was well written. I definitely want the next book in this series. I gotta know what's next for Grace.
This sounds like it will be a sad book, but it is not the slightest bit sad. Grace is having quite the adventure. She is just not sure If the adventure is real or a symptom of her brain tumour. In her normal life she zones out occasionally. When she comes back to herself along with the raging headache, she has marks and bruises. While she is in the zone she appears naked in front of a stranger. Then she is running from a mob in the woods, again naked. She also meets Roman, a vampire bard. Roman has this unusual woman appearing, then vanishing, then reappearing hundreds of years later. When Grace is in her zone with Roman they get into some trouble. Making love with a scary vampire feels to really as l to be Just in her mind.
This is the first of a three part story..So has no happy ever after, but it does have Grace making a decision on how she wants to live. I look forward to reading the rest.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I really liked this book. I'm a person who needs to be drawn in early. this story did that. I have never read anything similar to it. It was such a nice change of pace. I was impressed with the authors ability to create a split world and make each one captivating. The characters were not the typical one sided flat personality. I enjoyed them or really thought some were swine. The way she words things like "we don't drink from the sick. we can smell it " Leaves you questioning many things and makes you want to continue the series. There were a few editing issues that needed to be fixed. Overall I give it a solid 4 stars.
