This is an adult manga with a lot of violent scenes. In a way this manga has "true fighting scenes": the fightings are dirty and have no honor between opponents.
Volume 1 is still not too violent, but volume 2, 3, and beyond are getting more violent. Not just bloody from punching or kicking, but from weapons too. Some fightings in Shamo are fair duels or official competition fights, but mostly you must prepare the mental reading free fights between fierce sides.
Though I'm immediately intrigued by Shamo, it's hard to say exactly why. The first volume is a slow burn to nothing, promising a payout that I'm unsure it will deliver. The protagonist and supporting characters aren't interesting, but I approach them all with the same trepidation and vague interest with which they approach each other. It is as if the suggestion in the character interaction that there is something more to be understood moves me forward. I want to see how that curiosity resolves. There is some fairly shameless and sensational sexual assault in this volume, and because it occurs without context or consequence I find it to be both superfluous and repugnant. There might be something here, but Shamo's beginning certainly doesn't put its best foot forward.
I really enjoy manga like this, where the protagonist is no hero and instead is just a normal person who is going through their own struggles. Fantastic manga that id definitely recommend checking out

The story is lifeless at this point, but there is some promise. It's a coming of age tale for a troubled boy surrounded by violence and plagued by inner demons. Note to the sensitive readers out there - the volume features a detailed molestation scene. It was a bit much, but it does a good job of highlighting the rough setting and human corruption.
After being convicted of killing his parents in a moment of insanity that was out of his control, the 16-year-old Ryo Narushima is sent to a correctional facility along with other thieves and violent inmates. He is welcomed with the customary molestation due for any new arrival. He responds by biting off his molestor's penis.
What is left of his family doesn't provide any comfort. Ryo's sister Natsumi visits him to say she understands why he killed his parents - they were killing his spirit. She then says she never wants to see him again, but he swears he will protect her when he gets out.
Kurotawa, an inmate from another prison, is brought in to teach karate class, and offers the boy a goal in life. He teaches Ryo how to punch which comes in handy when the boy attacks the inmate Hiromi. Ryo loses control and lets the blood fly until he is found by a guard. Kurotawa, now a kind of parental figure for the boy, sees something special in Ryo who invests every waking hour in his training.
Short review because I’ll do a complete one ones I finish reading the whole series.
I was scrolling on social media when I saw someone recommending this manga with others mangas I already read and loved, I’m normally not a huge fan of long series (Shamo has 34 volumes…) but I thought why not give this one a try, it has a lot of subjects I like to read about, such as martial art, prison environment and a psychological story that will make you rethink everything.
The first volume is overall a nice introduction to the story and to the characters, it grips you immediately and makes you curious about what could happen in the following volumes. The main character isn’t a hero and isn’t presented as one, he’s a normal human being who did bad things and is now paying the price of his actions, inside the prison he’s considered as one of the weakest so everyone is taking advantage of that to make him their personal victim but he’s slowly discovering, with the help of a martial art teacher, that he’s maybe stronger than he thinks.
Big triggers warnings, from the first pages you see that this story is going to be very heavy and graphic with a lot of triggering subjects and actions, so be careful while reading it !!
I decided that since the ending is finally available (after what seemed to be a never-ending lawsuit), that I should read Shamo again and see if it holds up.
Kind of void, is nice to see a grey protagonist but for now (we shall see in following volumes) it only seems as a troubled mind releasing its pains through violence.
