When accidental time-traveller Jack Byrne is stuck for 48 hours in a Dales village in 1955, he is rescued by 14 year old Jimmy Ravenscroft and given bed, board and comfort by the boy's family at Watermill Farm. Home in Harrogate in 2010, he has to recruit friend Sue to go back to '55 with him, to prove his story, and also worries about how to repay the Ravenscrofts. Back at Watermill Farm, he finds a way to pay them back, after all, by ridding them of a serious threat to their very lives, from their odious son-in-law Billy Burnham. Along the way, we learn of Alice Ravenscroft's history from the 20s and 30s, the tragic death of her first husband, and her fight to keep their business going, while raising their two children. Mechanical heroes of the story are Jack's Toyota Land Cruiser (Elsie) and Alice's cherished 1935 Alvis Speed Twenty
5.0 out of 5 stars A time travel book with a twist, 7 May 2014 By Pollylou This review is Jack Pays Back - Elsie's Travels Part One (Kindle Edition) Brilliantly written, conjuring up pictures of North Yorkshire at three different times. I believed the second ending more than the first - read it and see if you agree.
3.5 stars. An interesting read of travel between 2 periods. Unusual concept of time gates operating at set times of day making it possible to travel at will between them. Enjoyable read and would certainly read another book by this author, especially in the same genre.
