Artemio Volpe has been crowned king of Espher, restoring his ancient line to power—and inheriting the worst crisis the kingdom has ever faced.
The Arazi Dragon Lords descend from the north. With flame and blade, they will purge all in their path to see the shadebound witch Orsina destroyed and their prophecies fulfilled. From the south march all the armies of the God-Emperor of Agrant, legions of soldiers backed by the unfathomable power of the living god himself.
Between them, at the point where hammer and anvil will meet, stands Artemio, his twin sister, an exiled Arazi prince, and a peasant girl with all the world's dead at her command.
Long live the king.

THIS IS IT. THE END. Ominous, right? Dum dum dum! I know many of you who have read my Fatemarked and/or Kingfall series expect my series to be five books long (and my next series, Forsworn, will be), but The Last King series was always meant to be a trilogy. That's how it was plotted, and it felt like the right length the entire time. It also means my awesome readers don't have to impatiently wait for any more sequels, the whole trilogy is now available to be read straight through to the end!
I could tell you all the reasons you should read this series if you haven't already, but instead I want to take a few lines to gush about the narrator for the audiobook versions, Tim Gerard Reynolds. For those who have never listened to a TGR performance, you are truly missing out on something special. I was first introduced to Tim by Audible Studios, when they selected him to perform Kingfall, a choice that ended up being LIFE-CHANGING, because not only was Tim's performance MASTERFUL, but he brought in a whole new group of super readers/listeners to my books. His fans, who love him and his craft so much that they'd listen to him read the phone book (are phone books still a thing? I digress...). In any case, I've been SO LUCKY to have TGR paired with two other of my series, The Bloodwood Saga (first book is Demon's Reign) and The Last King (this series!). So I just want to say thank you to Tim for bringing my stories and characters to life, and THANK YOU to my readers and listeners, who give my characters a place in their minds and hearts. I hope you enjoy the epic conclusion to The Last King series.
Perfect ending... Real life doesn't have happy endings. Good Guys never win, and evil always prevails over good. Rember, Light is not the absence of darkness. Darkness is natural state of the universe.
I have enjoyed Mr. Estes' other works, and, in fact, I liked the first book in this series. The second book, however, was a struggle to get through. It's too bad I didn't take that hint and stop there. This third book was just painful. I read for enjoyment, and this series was a huge downer. The only surviving main character was the one I found least appealing. Just so much waste. There's no doubt the writing itself is skillful, but I leave this series disappointed, and deeply relieved to be done with it. I'd like to wash it altogether from my memory.
I have to say upfront that I'm a bit skeptical when an author starts working with a ghost writer. It certainly has the benefit of getting more interesting books written, but at what cost? In the case of The Last King series, I can't put my finger on anything specific, and still gave it a 4, but I don't think it was quite as good as the series Estes wrote on his own - I'm not against collaboration but hope he continues to write individually.
It had been a while since I read the first 2 books so I read them again before picking up on the story. I enjoyed being able to read through the whole series in one fell swoop! As other have said, the ending was good, I think it was fitting who died and who lived. I will say that I'm a little puzzled about the mongrel peasants. The books never talked about how/why these people got to be mongrels. I don't see how anyone one want to bond with a rat or turtle, etc.? So, were they born with the bond, cursed with it, or???
Epic battles, endless twists and turns, a brilliant story
In any trilogy, the third book needs to go big and go fast! Thronebound does that in spades! Where book 2 seemed slow in places, it became apparent in this book why. The set up for the climax needed to be complex. So many threads needed weaving together. The result? The narrative speeds along like a huge lorry going down a hill, without brakes to slow it down. Things happen so quickly and unexpectedly it’s shocking. You think, this is how the story will end. But no! That’s just a chapter or two! When the climax does arrive, the scale is mind boggling! And so emotional, a real lump in the throat feeling. I couldn’t put this third book down. It defines excitement. You name it? It happens! Wow! Just wow!
Oh my god such a thrilling trilogy of books they have captivated me to the bitter end. David Estes, I have recently found you and have now read right of your books you have a brilliantly wonderful mind vivid words captivating me so now at 1am have just finished what a wonderful amazing unpredictability thrilling and heart warming at the same time. I'm in awe of your magical caricatures and how can anyone wrote the way you do sheet joy
There were some great characters in this story. Almost all began as heroes but steadily changed. Perhaps just one still died a hero. The only one left remaining the self-centred being they had always been. So no happy ending. Indeed no real ending at all but just a finish, a full stop.
This was an excellent and exciting conclusion to the trilogy. It only took me so long to read because life events meant I had very little reading time, otherwise I could’ve easily devoured this book much quicker.
Bittersweet ending, took a stretch, and a while to get there
Took a while to get to the end and it requires wondering how one of Art’s biggest weapons was able to avoid the things impacting the other weapons at the end.
The author ended this story very poorly . His story was 🤣 not entertaining and was complely inept . He chose not to write an uplifting tell but one that was sad and depressing .
Meh, I liked the first book, the second was ok, the third the least. I just found the characters less and less likable. By the end I didn't care much about what happened to any of them.
